The progression of Flint, MI's Chiodos is a rather strange one. Formerly the Chiodos Bros., the band's sound was essentially a lame duck ripoff of -- you guessed it -- the Blood Brothers. With the name change comes a severe departure from that sound. Generally speaking, the band now treads a more melodic post-hardcore territory with some screams of the Anatomy Of A Ghost / Saosin variety, but with a slight Horse The Band influence in the outfit's liberal use of keyboards and scattered metalcore riffs/structure. However, there are striking vocal and style similarities to Scary Kids Scaring Kids as well; only, Chiodos are a bit more original and about a thousand times as dynamic. In that sense, you could sort of say that Chiodos' second full-length, All's Well That Ends Well, delivers where SKSK's The City Sleeps In Flames failed miserably to.

Standouts on a relatively dragging but fairly creative disc include the nicely energetic and more simplistic "Baby, You Wouldn't Last A Minute On The Creek," with its super catchy hook of "this is probably the best (not to mention) the worst idea that I have ever had." In most other tracks, the band is more complex but never overdoes things, and when they do it's fairly obvious who they're drawing influence from. Exactly :53 into "The World's 'Best Friend' Become Redefined," there's a section of spoken word with the same exact vocal effect used in Circle Takes The Square's "Interview At The Ruins;" at least they pick yet another highly respectable band to rip off, if for only a moment. Tracks like "A Nereids Beware" and "Who's Sandie Jenkins" explore Craig Owens' amazing tenor over some delicate piano, exceeding that of any and all Copeland wannabes.

All's Well That Ends Well definitely has its moments, and carries on Equal Vision's habit of late in great artwork and layouts, this one overshadowing its cheesy D&D-esque imagery with interesting mostly purple/green color combinations and skeletal silhouettes on the back (everything of which is nearly ruined by the "I'LL STOP STABBING WHEN YOU STOP SCREAMING" line scattered around places on the packaging). It's not overwhelming, but it's a nice blend of two somewhat polar styles and a pretty refreshing hybrid on the whole.

Whoever wrote this review is ridiculously wrong.......how can anyone say that Chiodos is not original and just a bunch of wannabes copying other bands' styles........sure they may have some influences that may show through, but so does every band that has ever written music.....that doesn't make them unoriginal.......find me a band that sounds like Chiodos......you won't b/c there isn't one

And their name isn't copied from the Blood Bros., it refers to the series of movies by the Chiodo Bros., who make Killer Klowns From Outer Space......so they were wrong there too....

I noticed how several of you said that this band is NOT a ripoff of blood brothers, contrary to what the review said. however, the review did not say they were a ripoff of the blood brothers, it said their old name, "the chiodos bros" is a ripoff of blood brothers.
anyway, i agree with mostly everything said about this cd. the only difference between this band and any other band of this genre is the fact that no others have made these songs yet, but definitely would've if chiodos hadnt gotten to them first. i've yet to be impressed.

    My Score:

This album is FAMAZING! Why is everyone talking about a video game ...? Don't they have sites to talk about that? Well .. anyway ... I saw them live once, and I'm planning to see them (and The Used) at The Taste of Chaos tour (no matter who doesn't like the line-up). They are my 2nd favorite band and are insanely awesome and very different from today's crappy music.

Chiodos' cd is great but it loses some energy towards the end of the cd, but then picks up with the last song.

This cd deserves a better rating then 3

by the way, Fuck Final Fantasy, X-2 was shit, 7 will always be the best.

    There from Flint...

I could go there in like 30 minutes, or at least get there before the album plays through all the way once.

Lindsay quit lollygagging is by far the the best song of my week. I love it, every heartfelt second of it.
I live like 20 minutes from craig owens and talk to him all the times. awesome guy, awesome band

Posted by crazytoledo on 2005-08-01 15:44:01

    I've played like 4 - 5 rpgs and no other ones I like. Isn't 6, technically 3 in U.S.

Also, I'd rather play Shining Force 1 or 2 over Tatics. Thats my opinion though.

Posted by GreenVandal on 2005-08-01 04:24:03

Final Fantasy is far more imporatant then this band.

FF6 is the best. If you disagree, you have no fucking brain. 9 was good. 7 was great. 8 was EXCELLENT....except for drawing. Drawing sucked ass, but the huge amount of customization that GF-Junctions offered made it worth it.

The best game in the whole FF brand isnt even one of the main games, but rather a spinoff series. I speak of the almighty Final Fantasy Tactics. The GBA one is okay...but the original is where it is fucking at my friends.

I am a RPG fiend. The PS era was the golden age of the RPG, right up there with the SNES but new RPGs really dont do shit for me. FFX and X-2 were absolute garbage, and the FF series is overrated anyway. Enix makes much better games. Valkyrie Profile. Fuck yeah. Now that they are "squenix", they have been pumping out nothing but shit though. That merger was a horrid idea.

The guy that directed Tactics and Vagrant Story is directing 12, so heres to hoping that it fucking rocks! (and to hoping that Tri-Ace makes a sequel to Valkyrie Profile)

Grandia 3 looks surprisingly solid as well.

    Okay im done.

I'm going to risk slaughter by diverting the comments AWAY from shitty Final Fantasy and back to the band at hand. These guys rock. Sadly, last time I went to see them with Murder By Death, I missed there set. I was offered an acoustic set on the sidewalk by the guitarist though.

    Anyone heard Lindsey Quit Lollygagging?

I agree with the other comments, these guys never sounded like Blood Brothers...or even close to that.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2005-07-28 21:43:32

7 was awesome, 8 wasn't as good but great. 9 had terrible characters. 10 was gay, X-2 was gayer.

3 is suppose to kick ass but I haven't got around to it.

    Only rpgs I Like:

    Final Fantays 7,8
    Shining Force 1,2

I played FF 1-7 and beat them all and maxed out my chars in all of em. Then FF 8 came out and I couldnt even take the time to beat it, because it was terrible. Thankfully FF X renewed my faith in the series.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 1:11 PM (EDT)

Speaking of whick, the powerviolence band Mind Eraser uses the boss music from ff5 as a riff in one of their songs. Whether or not it was on purpose is still to be determined.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 1:05 PM (EDT)

"I'LL STOP STABBING WHEN YOU STOP SCREAMING"
Yeah right. I dare anyone in this band to step into a coroner's office and look at / smell a corpse with stab wounds. They'd shit their little emo panties.

And for the record, FF5 and FF3 (nes) were the best because of the job class system.

I'm gonna put myself into a locker now.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2005-07-27 23:54:40

Congratulations, Jones, you've made me laugh for the first time. I haven't heard the new one yet (thank the lord, our god Sabu) but that fucking "Get Ur Freak On" song makes i feel like I'm stuck on a never-ending Tilt-A-Whirl ride while needles stab my brain.

This band hasn't done anything yet to interest me, but I'll probably check this out strictly based on home-state love. Speaking of Mich. bands, I think "Catamaran" might be my song of the year so far.

That's not D & D artwork, it's a parody of the old Square RPG games. Like the early Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, etc.

so ya, if you thought this was a blood brothers rip off, for the name, your an idiot. look at the back of the box of killer clowns from outer space and team america and tons of other b-horror movies and you will learn. second, this band is amazing, one of the best bands i have ever seen in my life, not to mention this album is so sick. check it out for your selfs. if you are to scene for your own good or metal is all you like, chances are, you wont like this, but if you like feel good music, i suggest you listen.

    My Score:

My bro used to play these guys all the time, and I never found them very good - as they sounded like a Coheed ripoff with crappier singing. I heard these new songs and they're way better, but the changes from (kinda) pop to (kinda) metal are a bit awkward. Although both parts work, they don't meld well enough to make it an entire song ... it's more like 2 songs in one. At least on the two track that I heard - aka these links.
