The Fall Of Troy matched a visceral intensity from the creative side of aggression with combustible balls of prog rock on their self-titled debut. Needless to say, it was a flooring debut from the three-piece (!) that managed to combine the Blood Brothers' hardcore strides with the complexity of the Mars Volta. Despite a healthy smattering of older material appearing in re-recorded form (4 from TFOT and 3 older demos) here on their Equal Vision debut Doppelgänger, it's a rather strong followup that mostly continues in the same fashion as its preceding release.

The cleaner production featured on the disc, courtesy of veteran Barrett Jones, brings out the notably increased prog aesthetic of the band. The disc unmistakably marches forth with the clear guitar-prog sound in many of its tracks, immediately ushered in with the first few noodling seconds of opener "I Just Got This Symphony Goin'." It seems with this opening offering of chords that the band may have lost some of their intensity in the label transition, but any first impressions with this in mind are misleading. Daughters' fingerprints appear smudged all over the bridge of the frenetic "Laces Out, Dan!" as climbing guitars bounce left and right while gutterall feminine wailing takes place, and vocal acrobatics assist in "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.," which is severely sped up and subsequently a slight departure from the mid-tempo anthem it once was. "The Hol[ ]y Tape" smacks around with jagged riffs and Thomas Erak's crooning on top, while the redux of "Mouths Like Sidewinder Missiles" features racing, layered guitar leads at its initial setting, transitioning with a series of screams and then jumpy, dual vocals at the chorus seething with vitriol.

It's a feat to employ consistent stop-start rhythms with melodies, intensity, frantic and anthemic moments and simulatenously avoid dull junctures of cold calculation, but the inspired Doppelgänger is a fluid exercise in just that. While the LP may suffer from a severe lack of new material for longtime fans, its predictable unpredictability is what sets it apart and keeps the Fall Of Troy near the forefront of exciting and challenging music.

    My Score:

I really enjoy this band. Can you say guilty pleasure?
Their live show is really amazing. I love how the guitar work sound exactly like it does on the record--just as fast [and sometimes faster], just as complicated, just as beautiful. I'm very impressed by it.

favorite album right now. im not saying this band is the newest most original thing out there but i dont know anyone who has even heard of them before yet alone listens or likes thems...then again i live in the cultural wasteland of the universe.

    My Score:

great creativity, jazz chords in alternative/punk music, who woulda thought ehh haha... its nice to have something a lil different, its just a matter of time before all those trendy kids get into it, but in the end i believe this band with succeed and not fall into the "sell out" category cuz alot of kids like it. for all of you who negativly criticize this band, listen to something else, i enjoy listening and jaming their songs and they help improve my guitar skills and strive to be better, so i believe this band contributes alot more then what most of you think.

im soo sick and tired of everyone who writes in here to complain about a band that is actually really good. if all you do is just complain about shit you dont like, then why the hell does anyone want to hear your negativity just because YOU dont like something, and for all of those people i have someting to say to you, GET A LIFE and stop your bitching and go listen to someone else who makes you happy if that is even possible you emo pieces of shit.

great time changes. screaming sounds a little bit like Fear Before the March of Flames. good stuff though i know nothing history wise about the band.

best track- Act one, Scene one

    My Score:

The tightness of this band has, and will continue to improve with touring.
Although they may wear their influences on their sleeve - they do a helluva lot better job at putting something else into it than 90% of the bands that are reviewed on this site.

I think it should also be mentioned that these kids are 19-20

    Imagine what they'll sound like in a couple years . . .

"Perhaps it should be titled "Doppelganger of The Blood Brothers""

Yeah, except they sound nothing like the Blood Brothers, dork. Actually listen to the band next time instead of flaming them just 'cause you saw the Equal Vision logo and read the review. I also fail to see where the guy's guitar playing could be classed as sloppy, or how the music's "spazzy". Songs like 'F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X' are perfectly coherent and melodic. It's not like we're talking some 13 year-old hair-dye-loving band that think they're The Dillinger Escape Plan just by playing any old shit.

I think this stuff is far more like The Mars Volta if they dropped all the 14-minutes of white noise and stuck to, y'know...actual songs. I like it. Equal Vision might actually start releasing good stuff again now.

so everybody is going to have their own opinion of the band, and everybody is going to try to convince everyone else they are wrong. and to do so your opinions become more extreme and further from the truth. but lets try to be objective. the guitar work is pretty amazing. i think the people who say the guitar work is sloppy either aren't familiar with the genre or don't play guitar themselves. because the tapping and stop/start riffs executed by thomas are incredibly good. and if you don't know what tapping is, listen to a little minus the bear, and then you'll get the feeling for how insane thomas' guitar skills are. i wish the drum sound quality was more crisp so you could also get an idea of how amazing andrew is as well. bottom line is some of their songs may not be that original, but they just made a very very well executed album in an increasingly complex genre. and they'll only get better.

you guys whine about the screaming, but ever wonder why they scream? they scream because thats how they are portraying their feelings in a song, anyone can sing and harmonize to a tune. to all the negative criticisms... you try playing guitar very fast, singing, and screaming and creating music at the same time. i say, next big band.

Perhaps it should be titled "Doppelganger of The Blood Brothers"

"If I can attack their vocals and melodies, wouldn't I be telling you their lead singer isn't "fucking awesome"? The guitar work is a fucking joke, man. You can tell it's a kid within 10 seconds of each song. It's sloppy, loose, and the exact kind of thing a kid would think was "cool to play" when he first picked up a guitar. It's just a bunch of shallow children playing shallow music; their burning desire to be cool oozes out every clumsy riff."

did someone in this band go to elementary school with you and steal your milk money every day or something? you seem to have this undying grudge against just them. there is so much worse shit out there to hate besides this. even within the "genre" there is plenty of just laughably bad stuff.

as far as the "lead singer" remark, i only added that in to emphasize that he does all this (in my opinion) incredible guitar work while simultaneosly holding the role of lead singer. an elephant on a pogo stick in the middle of san fransico would fail to impress you.

I like plenty of "spazzy" bands, this just isn't one of them. That's what I'm trying to say: their spazzy sound is a gimmick and they're a bunch of fucking hacks. I suppose I shouldn't bother trying to explain it to fans of their music, because trying to reason with anyone that vapid is a waste of keystrokes.

I think its getting to the point where everyone calls any band with even a little bit of spazziness to their sound "too scene". Its really boring. There are much better things to hate then this. Also, as far as I can tell form this album, there is nothing sloppy about this band. Maybe live they cant hold it together, but at least this album has some rock to it.

Whatever...there is no way to defend musical opinions anyway....

    AlBuM Of tHe YeArR!1!

or is it too scene for that? does the album come with girl pants packaged in it or something?

I'm the anonymous guy from below and apparently the only person on this site who dislikes this band.

I am from the Seattle area, and with these guys being local I can tell you pretty sincerely how bullshit they are. I've heard the hype and the buzz about these douchebags since day one and could not believe how easily people buy into talentless bullshit. Every damn chord they strum sounds sloppy, amateur, and half way to being off key. Not in a "oh they're young experimental musical geniuses" kind of way, but in a "Turn this crap off." kind of way.

Every single one of their songs rips off Red Animal War, Glassjaw, the Blood Brothers, and Sparta. These aren't influences, they're blatant (and sloppy) mimicry. This band has been the ultimate "name drop" for hipsters trying to sound cutting edge. They don't write songs, they write two weak ass hooks and then scream the worst excuses melody I've ever heard.

But maybe they just sound bad to be "ironic", as all you kids seem to love these days. Tres chique.

Any band that drops an Ace Ventura bomb is OK in my book. Seriously though, I like what I heard. I'll give these guys a shot

The Fall of Troy sounds alittle like The Blood Brothers but not enough to really take way from the experience. It's not "trend hopping" or part of the "scene"....well maybe a tad. It's just 3 talented kids that can rock out better than most bands out there. There ain't nothing wrong with that.

In my opinion it's not as good as the ghostship demos, but thats just because that ep was just them raw and putting all they had into the songs without tremendous production, while this cd, although good, lacks the intensity and unpredictability that Ghostship had...well maybe thats just cause i've heard all but six of these songs already. Also the reworked songs are...um..sassier... so that may or not be a good thing...still great album.
