I was born in 1981, which means that 90% of my favorite bands were at the apex of their existence while I was running circle pits in my playpen to the sounds of "Sesame Street." Although I often lament the fact that I was born too late to experience firsthand the music that has proven itself to be the most vital in my life, I always keep an eye out for digitized time capsules of a bygone era, such as this one.

- stevejones8770@yaho.com i got the cut & paste right. "to the guy two posts below who hasnt learned to properly cut and paste...what the hell are you talking about with your punk points and shit? what in my comment made you think i care about all that and when you were listening to rkl? Shawn is one of the nicest guys in punk rock. Met him a few years ago in Richmond when they did a show with Mustard Plug, and I think, the Utters? "to the guy two posts below who hasnt learned to properly cut and paste...what the hell are you talking about with your punk points and shit? what in my comment made you think i care about all that and when you were listening to rkl? BYO RECORDS.........I ordered a cd from those guys a while ago, and after about 2 weeks I called them for the status. They said they sent it out a couple days ago and I should receive it any minute now. When I got home, there it was. I bought this on VHS about 3 years ago. It's great. It showed the ups and downs of punk rock touring. I liked the minor threat scenes the best, since my house is about 6 blocks from theirs. "woah, relax. i don't think anyone here is saying that the film isn't awesome, but it's jsut responsible when discussing a review to mention that, if the film is a documentary and some of it has been staged... well that is of interest and should be noted. no one is poo-pooing another state of mind. i made the first commment on this thread about it and im disappointed that you somehow read my observatiosn and the others as being aggressive. i didnt think that was the vibe," it's always shawn stern this, shawn stern that!!! to the guy two posts below who hasnt learned to properly cut and paste...what the hell are you talking about with your punk points and shit? what in my comment made you think i care about all that and when you were listening to rkl? Staged or not, the footage is of punks and punk rock music in 1982, so that's why I gave it a good score. "hahahahha...ok, maybe you missed that post in the main section about the reviews being backed up, so saturday is classic day and all that...maybe you missed that, but youre still a moron...rkl is even older than 5 years AHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH don't ask BYO to support their bands??!!!. do you want the story from both sides or are you only interested in what you read/heard from the band? "The movie is great but the score is for the BYO and Youth Brigade. It's more than 20 years later and they're still DIY and just as committed to the ideals of punk rock as they were back in the day." woah, relax. i don't think anyone here is saying that the film isn't awesome, but it's jsut responsible when discussing a review to mention that, if the film is a documentary and some of it has been staged... well that is of interest and should be noted. no one is poo-pooing another state of mind. i made the first commment on this thread about it and im disappointed that you somehow read my observatiosn and the others as being aggressive. i didnt think that was the vibe, all that footage was real, maybe they changed up a few locations, but it was still shot in 1982 and the shows did happen. why don't you get off your fat lazy computer asses and start your own scene! punk was a lifestyle and a community, make something happen for yourself and get involved with something that you believe in! how anyone can watch this film and somehow think that the scene w/John Macias in the wig factory was in NYC is just absurd!?!?! And to state that we were in that scene? Did you listen to our commentary? That scene was not a part of the tour at all and there were many parts of this film that were not a part of the tour, they were simply put in by the directors to give perspective to what they perceived as "punk rock" Of course we often disagreed, but in the end, it was not our movie. So, you get punk from lot's of different peoples' viewpoints, which is, at the very least, interesting. You'll also notice the footage is of Bad Religion during the stage dive sequence, not YB...classic, florentine gardens show. I bought this a few months back. Loved it. I was born in '76 so I too missed the realtime experience of Reagan-era punk. It's a good movie..... From the commentaries though, you find out that a lot of it was manufatured..... and alot of footage was subtracted from the overrall presentation, making this film incomplete in alot of ways. Then again, this is the best representation of the bands featured that is available in mainstream stores. "wow, yr '10 newest reviews' are all 1-5 years old. nice job." "wow, yr '10 newest reviews' are all 1-5 years old. nice job." wow, yr '10 newest reviews' are all 1-5 years old. nice job. great documentary and a great buy. although it is interesting as someone commented earlier that chunks of the footage you see don't even take place when and where its supposed to be. like the christian punk gathering in new york actually took place in l.a. and mike ness says in his commentary that there were a lot of things that happened on the tour that the film makers missed like the fight with the puerto rican gang in connecticut. Is there somewhere you can download Decline from? You're right, I should have added the commentary. This is great, even if just for the Minor Threat without a PA footage. Great movie. Glad its been re-released on DVD for all to see. Much more essential than the Decline of Western Civilization. Check the uncredited Keith Morris interviews... The movie is great but the score is for the BYO and Youth Brigade. It's more than 20 years later and they're still DIY and just as committed to the ideals of punk rock as they were back in the day. I think this review leaves out one extremely crucial point - if you watch the movie with the various (surprisingly entertaining) commentary tracks, it's revealed that MANY scenes of this classic film were in fact re-created and staged. The film makers even pushed that kid to keep changing his hair color. they do have decline on dvd Now, if only they'd release "Decline Of Western Civilization" on DVD... " Amazing. A great look in to 80s punk. |
