The greatest denim wearing, coke snorting, alcohol abusing, glittered up supergroup to come out of Europe are back, with the incredible followup to Scandanavian Leather and the third editon to the Apocalypse series. It is entitled, rather appropriately and seemingly autobiographically, Party Animals.

The story of the Norwegian natives Turbonegro is one of true rock'n'roll epic status (sorta). They formed in the mid-nineties and released two of the decade's greatest releases: Ass Cobra in '96, and Apocalypse Dudes in '98, the first chapter of the Apocalypse series. Soon after, while on tour in Italy, drug addicted singer Hank Von Helvete has a mental breakdown and is admitted to the hospital. The band breaks up. After being released, Von Helvete has a well deserved break from his former lifestyle and goes to live with his grandparents, leading a relatively normal life. Meanwhile, his ex-band members were all busy with various side projects, none of which were even comparable to TN. This trend continues for a couple of years. Then in 2002, after a brief but incredibly popular stint under the name Turbojugend, the singer returns and Turbonegro are ressurected. They release Scandanavian Leather in 2003 (the second of the Apoc. series), and it certainly was worth the wait. The album was well received from fans and critics alike. At this time, they are undeniably the greatest rock'n'roll band on the planet, so where to go from there...?

The clock strikes 2005, and the denim is out once more.

When reviewing an album like this, being as it is the third chapter of a series, I felt it were necessary to have it compared and contrasted to the first two. And who better to explain the evolution (although that's not the appropraiate word in this case) than band member himself 'Happy' Tom, who says this: "The first was 'Apocalypse Dudes,' which was about sex and pizza. 'Scandanavian Leather' was the second one; that was about nature and survival. Now the third one is 'Party Animals' and it's about war!" Need an elaboration? Well, here's my view on things.

Gone are the lyrics of homo-eroticism which the first albums were riddled with; they have been replaced by those of getting wasted and totally fucking shit up (see "Death From Above"). There is no maturity lyrically for the band; for them, it's all about having a good time. Musically however, Party Animals is a step up for the band. Turbonegro have incorporated a few new techniques into their songs for a fresher sound. The transistions range from "deathpunk," a term which the band created for themselves, to classic rock "City Of Satan," to trashy garage, while a horn section is featured on "High On The Fire" (my personal favourite track), and a fifty-piece symphony orchestra is put to great use on "Final Warning." If there was still any doubt in your mind whether or not you would be buying this album, then a guest appearance by the legendary Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks) should seal the deal. There are no highlights (apart from the aforementioned HOTF), as every song on the entire disc is sensational in its own right.

Basically, this record is superb and comes highly recommended. It may not be as perfect as Apocalypse Dudes was, but it's still guaranteed to be one the most awesome things you'll hear all year.

Yeah, but their great albums start with "Ass Cobra".

    1. Apocalypse Dudes
    2. Ass Cobra (a very close 2nd!)
    3. Scandinavian Leather
    4. Party Animals
    5. Taking Back Thursday and 99% of the new bands on the 'Org

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 25, 2005 at 1:21 PM (EDT)

turbonegro released at least two if not three albums before asscobra.

its "high on the crime" not "high on the fire"
get your song titles correct mr. reviewer!!

Oh, it's okay, because Ben Kweller is the "savior of pop music". The mighty Scott is always right, because he's got the license to hype.

I just hate that sort of reviewing.

Calling a band the "saviors" or "the band to keep your eyes on" just puts whatever sort of quality they have in a time capsule. I know I don't want to check out any music that critics just hype because they have to convince themselves that modern pop is still exciting. It's because they always turn out to sound like shitty alterna-90's singer-songwriter crap.

    My Score:

i picked this up this morning and it slays. i'd place it as the 3rd best that they have released after ass cobras and a. dudes. i should have bought this a while back instead of ordering the small feces box set, which while having some interesting cover songs, wasn't really worth the 45 bucks or whatever that i paid for it

    My Score:

This album rocks, but there are some things in this review that bother me.

    1. this quote "Gone are the lyrics of homo-eroticism which the first albums were riddled with; they have been replaced by those of getting wasted and totally fucking shit up (see "Death From Above")"

so songs like "Blow Me Like the Wind" and lyrics like "flipr your burger and shake your buns" are not the style of the old TN?

    2. This is great. A reviewer doesn't even have the common sense to get the track names correct. Where on Party Animals is "High on the Fire" your so called favorite track? I think you mean "High on the Crime".

While this recording is awesome, it bothers me to see people tuning into MTV, watching Bam Margera playing TN, and then rushing out to buy the newest cd. And what bothers me more is seeing a reviewer having no clue what they are talking about.

Lush Looser, LL Full Gay, Turbojugend East Bay, says it's a 7/10, but that it'll probably grow on him like a fungus and he'll rate it a 10 before the end of the year.

The Apocalypse Dog, Lord of the Tennis Ball and Keeper of the Sacred Rawhide, Presidente of Turbohund East Bay, agrees.

Someone on here said it really well in a recent Turbonegro news item- "This isn't as incredible as 'Apocalypse Dudes' but it still blows most current bands out of the water.'

Thumbs up, this gets my vote, especially since they avoid the crap glam ballad bullshit that too many "rockers" embrace (see ironic appreciation of Bon Jovi and Cinderella). Every song's a rocker, and it veers from some "Apocalypse Dudes" punkish tunes to some "Scandinavian Leather" hard rock rifforamas- "City of Satan" comes to mind.

yes there was a second movie made and yes it sucked worse than the first one and yes i admit that i saw it. that is all.

all this shit that is reviewed here shows there is no quality control
this is an average scandinavian rock album, but its 100000 times better than the rest that is reviewed here....

    The album is atrocious.

If you close a review by saying that an album isn't as good as a bands previous work, it does not deserve a perfect score. End of story.

    My Score:

This record is good, but it took a while to grow on me. That's rather strange, since I love TRBNGR to death. They're one of my all time favorite bands. I think they were just trying to be sleazy and Rolling Stones-y with this record, and it kind of worked, but they should stick to the deathpunk/glam fusion that just exploded all over Apocalypse Dudes. They're way better than this record shows, so I guess it's a disappointment.

Oh, the singer's name is Hank Von Helvete, for the record.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at 3:13 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

For the most part this album is a homage to 70/80s party and arena rock. It's really good if you're into that kind of stuff, which I am unfortunatly am not. It tends to grate on me rather than impress me.
The album is pretty solid minus the track "Stay Free" which is a really limp and corny song about the band itself.
A couple of huge and welcome surprises are the songs "City of Satan" and "Final Warning" which make extremely creative use of orchestral arrangments to add to the overall feel of the songs. City of Satan starts out sounding like Queen and ends with a cresendo of musical chaos, where as Final Warning thunders right off the bat with a string section that actually feels like it's stabbing you when Hank howls, "This is my final warning/I'm going to kill you while you're sleeping/I'm going to kill you dead!" If the entire album was made up of songs as emotionally rising as these two this would probably be one of the greatest and biggest rockn'roll albums in history. But it's not.
Although Party Animals fumbles on the odd song at times it can sound larger than life and is full of enough swagger to keep me coming back, but it is far from the perfect record this splooging fanboy would like you to believe.

    And that's my two cents.

This kinda seems like a bit of a fanboy review to me, to be honest. Even if I thought this band were any good, I'd be a bit sceptical. Perfect score? Why can't people save those for albums that are genuinely classic, genre defining and so on, instead of rendering the scoring system effectively worthless?

I know it's usually the body of a review that counts, and that scoring is still only a crude means of summing the review up, but come on, it's a bit ridiculous.

Well, I'd give a 10 to Apocalypse Dudes, so a 9 is fine to "Party Animals".

Correcting the review, the song title is not "High On The Fire" it's "High On The Crime". There's also another guest vocalist, Nick Oliveri (ex-Queens Of The Stone Age) on the last track "Final Warning".

you (and everyone else here for that matter) should read Lords of Chaos by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. it's about the black metal scene in the 90's and how goddamn crazy it was. some extremely fascinating shit in that book, particularly the parts about Burzum and Mayhem (mmmm, brain soup). those crazy metalheads are some fucked up dudes. they also talk about the clowns who try to immatiate this shit in the states. i don't feel like doing a friggin book report right now, but as far as non-fiction and music books are concerned, this one is top-notch. VERY highly recommended, regardless of how you feel about that kind of music.

I was extremely confused when I first got into this band, trying to figure out if they were a gay band or not. Now, I'm not the type of dude who this would matter to a great deal, but when they have albums called "ass cobra" and are all wearing sailor outfits, and then you see photos of their singer getting married...to a woman, it tends to set off the "what the fuck" alarms.

But then I found out that it's just an "act", and in Norway, the metal scene is/was horribly competative, with murders and church burnings, and they figured what could scare metal kids more than a pantload of homosexuality? Brilliant move, I say.
