Dim Mak (Logo)

Published on September 4th 2005

Transcontinental punk band Das Oath's first real album went unfairly overlooked last year, dismissed as "another thrash album." True, it is thrash at heart, but it also throws in an uncommon knack for rock'n'roll licks and art-noise that sets it apart from the rest without being too obtrusive.

Fans of Charles Bronson probably already know that this is Mark McCoy's newest project, and I think his vocals are only getting better. He works his singing into the music in a way that truly flows (as much as this sort of stuff can). Lyrically, he tackles the same ground in a much more refined fashion, offering advice to "sever the nerves at the root / before feeling returns / to betray" in regards to the underground rock scene.

Musically, Das Oath are unmatched in terms of brutality and overall musical abrasiveness. Taking obvious note of the "old school of thrash" á la SSD, Void and Deep Wound, expect the ultra-distorted, massive-sounding guitar assault to frequently give way to sludgy noise dirges that will leave the unsuspecting listener befuddled.

Could this be the album that unites pretentious art creeps with skate-scraped thrashers?

This is one of those bands I keep meaning to check out but haven't yet.

When I first heard Bronson, I thought they were pretty cool, but they have never hung around on one of my mixtapes. I met a girl last year who tried to tell me how much she was into the powerviolence thing back in the day. She kept telling me about her favorite Spazz song for like 10 minutes. I didn't recognize the "spazz song" she was talking about. It was way later that we realized it was a Bronson song. We had both forgotten the name of the band.

    My Score:

Everytime I see this band online, I think of Rammstein. This is really good stuff, or what I've heard, at least.

What a great messy noisy band, this is what i like!!
Their cover of Queen "We Are The Champions" is probably the most unintentionally hilarious thing i have ever heard (see Das Oath Deaf Ears Tour CD)

Bronson will NOT be forgotten. Are you kidding me? They were the first band to use those high pitche, annoying vocals that bands like Blood Brothers and The Locus sooo surely rip off. Not to mention they also were one of the first bands to use really long song titles that were funny(?) and make people think that bands like The Locus, Dillinger 4, and the Blood Brothers, amongst others, still use. Das Oath are probably one of those bands that will always live in the shadow of Charles Bronson mainly because of who is in the band, but Charles Bronson will always be a band people remeber when the think of the whole mid 90's powerviolence scene.

Seriously, kids...Bronson was way overrated. They were the joke-punk of powerviolence and will be long forgotten amongst the ranks of No Comment, Crossed Out and Infest. The members went on to do some sweet follow-up projects, namely MK-Ultra and Punch in the Face, which, in my honest (and drunken opinion) were much more solid. Feel free to debate this.

Charles Bronson was good. Not digging this band.

I'll skip YOU in favor of Scrotum Grinder! The two bands have nothing in common besides that they are both fast and have distortion. On those same grounds, I could say, "skip Scrotum Grinder in favor of Void" or "Forget Void, it's all about Black Flag" which would lead to "Never mind Black Flag, all you need is 'I Heard Her Call My Name' off "White Light/White Heat" by the Velvets".
