Fuck off, a personal history is needed. I got into I Spy through Propagandhi. Todd (also known as the Rod to some, but not me) was the lead singer of I Spy, and the bass player and one of the singers in Propagandhi. After getting into this CD, and I don’t mean having it in heavy rotation for a week, I mean sitting down with the booklet, rocking out to it with friends, rocking out to it all alone, and rocking out to it while reading millions of sites on the Internet trying to wade through self-righteous left and right people propaganda.

Okay, I’m done with that shit. What was the point? Basically that I’m not a master at whatever-the-fuck genre this is. This is I Spy. This is an “anthology” of theirs. It’s all their recorded shit in one package. The music’s called “grindcore” I hear. Whatever. It’s a bunch of skids from Buttfuck, Nowhere, mighty pissed off about the entire world, and refusing to be a part of any of the shit they see around them. Todd barks out lyrics about all those bad bad things in the world (capitalism, slavery, genocide, sit-coms) while the band plays raw and fast as hell. Well, okay, they play slow sometimes, and the barking becomes slurred mumbling and is sometimes coherent yelling. I think Todd sings on a song or two as well. It’s quite pretty.

Personally, I like to go fucking apeshit crazy with a bunch of people. However, I hate bands that are full of attitude, take themselves way too seriously, are macho dickheads, and fucking hypocrites. So I Spy rocks because it’s going crazy while hating animal cruelty and the objectification of women (for those not in the know, that’s the best kind of rocking). You also won’t feel like you’re listening to a band who is all talk and no rock about politics. So it’s inspiration for you to stop being that armchair anarchist you are. I listen to this CD more than Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes, and therefore it has to be fucking awesome. Logic has forced me to give the disc a good rating.

Oh yeah, it has that sort of unpolished, raw, gritty, sound (much like this review, fuck doing slick reviews for music that isn’t slick).

this music saved my life, so I’ll be dead and fucking gone before it’s bought and sold, just like appliances and cars

these guys shouldn't have bothered putting this out. the tracks from 'revenge of the little shits' are fabulous. most of the other stuff is forgettable at best.

"A lot of the songs remind me of Todd's 'Fuck the Border' from TETA"

They should. He wrote "Fuck The Border" while I-Spy were still around, but the band broke up before recording it, so it became a Propagandhi song.

    My Score:

Bad review, decent album at best. A lot of the songs remind me of Todd's 'Fuck the Border' from TETA, only with shittier recording.

Speaking of TETA, greater than, this disk is not.

I've gotta pass on this album. Sorry. If I want fast, pissed off melodic hardcore thrash, I'm gonna listen to Propagandhi. And Todd is great in Prop, so it's alright I pass on this album.

    This isn't grindcore either, man.

"i thought punk was about love for your country and religion and that means respecting the pope and joining the military.

this album cover is offensive. music like this destroying our society and should be banned!"

    HA!

I wrote it out of fun, not anger. It is unfocused rambling, I won't argue with you there. And watch out, or I may just fist your chode with my anger. I was almost in a band called "penetration: chode". It was awesome.

I also wrote an Aquabats review that is unfocused poorly written rambling, so if it gets posted, you can call me a retard again. You have something to look forward to!

Fistchode (as if i need to continue after calling this retard by his self imposed [retarded] nickname) is a bad writer. This review is bad. Unfocused angry rambling isn't fun to read. The record is okay...the cover features butts.

fistchode: im just bitter because i submitted a review over 2 months ago, and it still hasnt gotten published. and im now coming to the realization that it never will. im not sure who i pissed off, but fuck it. if i wrote something about an audiotape of rivers cuomo taking a dump, im certain itd get frontpaged immediately.

The second half of that setence must've gotten lost on the way to the internet. What it was, only Jesus knows now, and I bet he'd assure you it was fan-fucking-tastic. (for the next reviews I do, I'll be sure to do more than one proofread, and try to do so without going "man, I'm awesome")

    wow, bad review.

im not trying to be a grammar nazi, im just curious... wheres/whats the second half of this sentence?

This record is worth $100 for the album cover alone.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 4, 2005 at 7:57 PM (EDT)

Hey fitsch, may I suggest a meaningless, verbose, and pretentious 3-paragraph introduction, wherein you explore everything the words "I Spy" mean to you (perhaps that kiddy book series), lament the current state of music, and fail to touch on anything close to resembling the music on said disc? Geeze, get with it!

    -Will

PS- When you do get around to describing the music, be sure to overhaul the use of "powerful" and make uninformed generalizations about what kind of music you think this is. In fact, you don't even have to review the music. Just review what kind of music you think it is!

Despite the review, I'd like to check this out.

    My Score:

I remember when I heard this back in the day when Propagandhi was 'hard and metal sounding' (to me), but considering I love grind and fast shit I should probably check this out. But this reviewer seems a little too pissed off - next time don't freak out in the review, do that in the comments underneath.

Posted by fistchode on 2005-09-04 17:03:47

Sorry, for my next review I'll write in APA format and have a readability of 12.0, because, you know, punk music has always been about the esoteric language.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 4, 2005 at 3:01 PM (EDT)

grindcore? no. haha. this is an awesome hardcore punk album. it also includes a youth of today cover.

""are all the reviews on this site 10th grade creative writing papers?"

    I'm starting to think so....."

Oh, sorry I don't feel the need to drag out music reviews for 60,000 words...

If you can't handle the idea of keeping it short and to the point, go jerk off to your precious Pitchfork.

    My Score:

this album is way up there on my list as well. im not too sure about this review. anyways, if you havnt heard this album, go to G7 and download a track. you'll be happy you did. this is real, sincere, honest, thrashy, punky insense, raw, personal political music. amazing stuff.

Posted by gladimnotemo on 2005-09-04 11:51:43
    My Score:

This is grindcore? I remember it being more like the hardcore Propagandhi mixed in on Today's Empires...grindcore would be a stretch.

This is record is defitnely in my top 15 best records of all time list. Not that anyone cares about my top 15 list but seriously "Perversity is spreading..." is an amazing record.

    Listen to it.

    An Awesome I-Spy Lyric:
