Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Scum are a "super-group" of sorts formed by Amen vocalist Casey Chaos, Fuast and Samoth of legendary black metal band Emperor, Cosmocrator of MindGrinder, and Happy Tom of Turbonegro. Gospels for the Sick is their brutal new album and, as you might expect, bridges the musical gap between hardcore punk and black metal, much in the same way bands like Discharge and Nausea helped bridge the gap between punk and metal.

The combination of these two styles is so intense and snug that it's a miracle no one has tried it before. According to the band, "the blueprint for the project was the spirit of Norwegian black metal mixed with a punk rock attitude," and I honestly couldn't say it better myself. Songs like "Truth Won't Be Sold" and "Protest Life" combine a menacing and at times political punk rock sneer with the speed of hardcore and black metal song structure/rhythm.

There's very little I can actually compare the album to musically, although I've heard people compare it in sound to the band S.O.D. (whom I have not listened to). There are definitely hints of Discharge's chaotic noise and, of course, Casey's own band Amen.

The band themselves call their style "Death Punk" and it's a much needed, brutal "take no prisoners" album during the current drought of good hardcore records. A must buy for fans of black metal, extreme-hardcore punk, grindcore, crust, etc., or bands like Amen, Discharge, Poison Idea, Emperor, Black Flag, Nausea, Destroy, etc.

hey man, lay off the Bronx haha, there's nice parts.

but yea, Norway seems pretty tame, especially compared to some of the more violent place in first world countries. the thing is kids from the South Bronx rarely wind up being lunatics. do they seel drugs and shoot each other? sure. but they never eat each other of do seriously insane shit. plus their violence isn't usually hate based.

i know i've said it a hundred times, but you owe it to yourself to read that book, it's completley worth the money. it will change your perspective on a few things.

That happens with alot of people.....well spoken, but I wonder what the hell fucked them up so bad to believe the things that they do. I mean, these guys are from fucking NORWAY! It's not like the have it very rough up there in ANY areas.....atleast, in comparison to places like Watts or the Bronx. It sounds to me like these guys either have serious mental disorders or are just severely brainwashed by their own ideas.

Burzum IS a hate band. and Varg is one of the most hateful human beings on the planet. he's just a piece of shit. he's very well spoken though, i wonder where he went wrong.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 6:36 PM (EDT)

Burzum is listed as a hate band in a number of circles because of Varg's Pagan Nazi beliefs.

some of the churches they burnt down were over 500 years old. i'm no fan of religion either, but come on guys, grow up. wtf does doing this shit prove?

i think Varg is getting out of prison in 2008, but don't quote me on that. he's all sorts of socialist now, but says he'll never pologzie for what he did back then.

these guys were all about being 'evil' and they sure did a good job of it. considering Nroway is a pretty peaceful country overall, i think the whole scene accounted for most of the violent felonies in the mid 90's. it was a big problem for a few years, i don't know how it never got international press.

you guys should really read the book. all this shit is true, and you'll be amazed at what happened here because of these fanatics. there's also a history of where the music came from, including it's punk roots. the stuff about Varg/Burzum is infinitley fascinating, the guys is a genius and also a fucking psychopath. the way he talks about all this shit you'd think he was talking about going to the store.

    My Score:

Wow......that's some fucked shit.....I had never known any of this. I mean, sure, they lived up to their own "satanic" bullshit.....but WHY? I'm no fan of religion.....but blowing up a church (even if it is empty) is just fucked. Anyway, that's some scary shit....but it has NOTHING to do with music, if the music SUCKS then I don't care how "hardcore" they are, it's just a joke. I still love this album though, Casey's a great guy and is always very friendly/informative.

From the AMG bio of Emperor:

"However, around the same time, Samoth was convicted of arson after burning down a historical wooden church; Tchort was sentenced for burglary, knife assault, and desecration; and Faust was locked up for arson, burglary, and murder, stabbing a homosexual acquaintance 14 times outside the Olympic Park in Lillehammer."

Hellhammer (Mayhem's drummer), not Euronymous, made a necklace from Dead's skull fragments. Later on Mayhem's bassist Varg Vikernes aka Count Grishnackh drove about 6 hours to visit Euronymous, under the pretense of discussing a contract and then stabbed him approximately 23 times. Supposedly the motive had something to do with wanting to prove he was more evil than Euronymous. When Varg was arrested they found large amounts of stolen dynamite and plans to blow up a large church on a religious holiday in his house. Varg's solo project was called Burzum, some of which was recorded before he went to jail and some from prison. He's still in jail now, where he has since decided to give up black metal and become a follower of National Socialism.

Posted by AlmostPunkEnough on 2005-10-06 06:04:54

    ok, Will, Brandon and others:

Dead killed himself, shoutgun in the mouth (Courtney Love was nowhere to be found). Euronymous came wandering by and saw his boy all over the room, so he decided to make a tasty stew out of part of his brain. he also made a pretty necklace with pieces of his skull. what a great guy, that Euronymous.

supposedly Dead didn't have much of a sense of humor, but his suicide note read "Pardon all the blood." hilarity.

all of this can be found in the book i liked to at the bottom, one of the most interesting things you'll ever read, i can't recommend it enough. it talks about Mayhem and Burzum in insane detail, as well as the white trash in the boondocks of the U.S. who take this shit way too seriously. and the scuffels between the black metal scene of Norway and the Death Metal of Sweden at the time. plus some ins and outs and random violent acts these guys enjoyed so much. GREAT book.

    READ THIS BOOK!!!! http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0922915946/qid=1128 592801/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-1858776-7853459?v=glance&s=books&n =507846

personally i'm not huge on this type of stuff. i like Emperor, Satyricon and maybe some other scattered stuff, but i much prefer the Swedish scene; At The Gates, Dissection, (old) In Flames, etc. and i'd rather listen to 'punk' than any of it. i gotta be in the mood. as far as them not having anything to say, they really don't, it's just reshased crap and makes anything remotley emo sound like the most amazing, least cliched lyrics ever.

and not that it's cool or anything, in fact, it's all pretty lame, but if the North Side Kings or some act like that ever threatened these dudes, they'd just call them fags, stab them to death, piss on them and leave them in the woods. and they'd enjoy every minute of it. fucking lunatics.

Posted by BrandonSideleau on 2005-10-06 05:33:41

Yeah that shit is pretty fucked up.....I just checked it out online. Are you guys sure this wasn't just some huge marketing ploy?? Anyway, if it wasn't......I can't really relate to the whole "Black Metal" scene.......too ridiculous and contrived. Still.....I love this album.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 4:58 AM (EDT)

Pelle Dead took shot his brains out with a rifle and left a note saying 'My apologize for the blood'. One fucked up bandmember from Mayhem found his corpse and tasted a bit of Pelle's brain, what became his death. I think it was Varg Vikernes (Burzum) who stabed him about 17 times... Correct me if I'm wrong, don't really remember.
Mayhem took a picture of Pelle Dead's corpse and used it as a EP cover. Kinda fucked up, but that's our neighbours - Norway. Haha...

Posted by BrandonSideleau on 2005-10-05 19:50:45

First off.....the guy only ate his brains lol. Secondly....I believe the guy killed himself, and brain matter eaten later. Not trying to defend such a digusting act......just getting facts straight. I'm not too sure about Black Metal.....it's strange, but a little too theatrical for my tastes. I love this album though, I don't see what the problem is.

um, maybe this is widely known to others, but i dont follow metal too much, let alone metal in norway, but what band did that? and did the band member that was eaten go willingly? or was it murder? wow

Yes, Turbonegro coined the genre Death Punk before any of these washed up idiots.

Given the fact that the bassist of SCUM is from Turbonegro, I think it's 100% OK that they use the term.

    My Score:

I got this record. It's in NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM as perfect as you set it out to be, but its got some sick tracks ("Throw Up On You" being the best) here and there. And plus, MORTIIS is on that shit. That guy is more everything than anything ever!

The only drag, I think, is Casey Chaos. His stupid voice, his shitty song writing. He sucks a big one. And I think for a band with a number of members with death-metal backgrounds, the Turbonegro stuff is the only shit that really stands out, and almost seems like a lame rip off at times.

But fuggit. I love Turbonegro so i ain't complain'!

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at 8:06 AM (EDT)

Chaos and an early version of Amen backed Vanilla Ice on his rap-metal album. Punk as.

Posted by AlmostPunkEnough on 2005-10-05 05:18:41

Will, first of all, i never complain about production, sometimes i do think it takes away from the music.

and yea, they lyrics are like satan's 'special' kid wrote them, i just think it's funny, and it's not like you can understand them anyway. i went through a phase years ago when i liked it. musically it's very techincal, almost classical in some respects. boring? sure, it gets old quick, but meh.

and i still don't think it's as bad as tough-guy hardcore, where they threaten to piss on my grave. that wouldn't be very nice at all.

Death Before Musick was very over-produced......but it still kicks the shit out of most the shit out there.

    My Score:

Eh, I checked out the latest Amen album because of a review here and I didn't like it at all. There were a few decent songs but I wasn't impressed with the lyrics or the vast majority of the music. It also had really slick production for a band that's supposedly so intense. I'm guessing they're probably better live so I'll withhold judgment, but I wouldn't go out and get this or anything related to that band without hearing 3 or 4 songs first & liking them a lot more than "Death Before Musick".

Right, obviously one member of a band can carry on a complete genre of music, even when the bands are nothing alike.

no idiot. you said turbonegro coined the term before any of these wash up idiots or whatever....but one of these wash ups is in turbonegro....

so how did turbonegro coin the term before the members of turbonegro? moron

Black Metal? Some of it's allright... Darkthrone are okay.

Of course, the lyrics are beyond idiotic. And I don't see how anyone can complain about production if they like that shit. I also don't see how anyone can complain about "macho idiots" if they like black metal (or nearly any kind of metal).

If I were to take the music just for the music, though, I'd say... The songs are overly long and get boring, but it's not as bad as hair metal.

"when are old school punks going to step into the 21st century with their album art?"

Well, first and most important, Casey isn't old-school.

Second, is the cover missing a digital reworking of a photo of some weepy goth model or something? Is their font style not girly enough? I don't know what you're talking about.

Honestly, I dig Amen. I've never seen them live, so I don't know how that goes. I've also never looked at pictures of Casey so I don't know how he looks like.
Why do people here have such a backlash on bands based on appearance? I mean I know there's the whole "Mall-Core" deal, but so what if a guy looks a certain way? I heard shit-awful bands long before I've ever seen their press photos. Shitty images are supposed to be additional ammo to make fun of a band, not your main artillery.
And where can I pick this shit up? Is it carried in most chains? Or do I have to mail order this whore?

See them live.....that's all I can really suggest. Casey's the real thing, sure he's got the whole "image" going.....but that dude fucking goes for it all onstage and is probably gonna get himself killed because of it (he has a pretty serious medical condition). Amen are one of the very few bands in the world today that actually try to destroy themselves with their own music, kind of like the Germs or Black Flag. I love the records.....but it really doesn't compare to their live show. Scum, on the other hand, I have never seen live.....but since Casey is the lead singer (and since Amen is a "revolving door" band) it's safe to assume they kill it pretty damn well. I know it's not for everyone, but Amen are one of the few bands I can get into the same way I can with a band like Black Flag.....maybe I'm alone in this...whatever. To each his/her own.
