Try and remember back in the late 90's, junior high, or high school for most of us; what were you listening to? Reel Big Fish's "Beer," Catch 22's "9mm and a Three Piece Suit," or was it Mustard Plug's "We're Gonna Take on the World?" Ska was hot property in the late 90's, with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less Than Jake, and others proudly parading the third wave. It seems like Mustard Plug often get lost amongst the others, however, but their retrospective Masterpieces: 1991-2002 is giving the kids one more chance to listen.

Mustard Plug is one of those guilty pleasure bands for me. I don't want to like them, I don't admit to my friends I like them, but damnit, I can't help it. They're just too catchy and fun My old band used to cover "Mr Smiley" way back near the beginning of our existence... i think 96/97. Those were the days... music could be fun and silly. all i listened to in jr. high was SNFU p.s. all i listened to in jr. high was millencolin. that is all. The two years I was into the third wave thing I was able to see Mustard Plug seven times. Maybe it's Chicago's closeness to grand rapids but damn. great band, great songs, great record.....long live ska! This review was pretty good, but here's how I would make it better: in a package i got from no idea, instead of styrofoam "peanuts" or newspaper, the box was stuffed with crumpled up mustard plug masterpieces posters. "Thigh High Nylons" is a great fucking song. Also, Jones the Bones never got any pussy (unless he counts when he fucks himself). oh, and "go boy!" off of telegraph's "switched on" cd, is one of the best songs ever written. i always liked the parka kings and telegraph better as well. their cds still find their way into my cd player. mustard plug...not so much. speaking of the good times....how about the parka kings and telegraph (skolars)??? in the last half of the nineties i was in high school making love to a hot pinay and going to reel big fish and mealticket shows. ...my favorite bands of late junior high / early high school... score is for Mustard Plug's consistency over the years. never the flashiest or most technical, but always wrote great songs. ""im one of those heard of but never heard these guys guys. wheres the best place to start?" I was the only kid in my hgh school who wore a Mustard Plug shirt back in 98 and lets say I stuck out like a sore thumb with that shirt on. Reading this review got me in the mood to take out their records and listen to them again. They were one of the few Ska bands that I got into back then. Back then if you were into Punk chances are you all probably listened to Op Ivy, Rancid, Screeching Weasel, The Queers, and The Casualties(at least I was listening to them back then). Needless to say I still listen to all those bands today. I miss those days. "im one of those heard of but never heard these guys guys. wheres the best place to start?" im one of those heard of but never heard these guys guys. wheres the best place to start? i've never undestood this sites hard on for shitty mid-nineties ska. more like disaster pieces ho, ho, ho. Mustard Plug are by no means the BEST ska band, but they're really consistant, and definatly a solid band. nah pittsburgh warped tour...they got half an hour but i don't really count warped tour side stage shows as seeing a band do a real live set. i guess that was warped 2002? i think the last time i saw them in a club was either winter of 2000 or 2001...w/ mu330 "great live show too...saw them at least 3 times that i can think of off the top of my head. 4 if you count warped tour. junior high for me was '95-'97 and i listened almost exclusively to led zeppelin and pink floyd. This score is for some real fuckin ska or shall i say the slackers, oh , hepcat too- oldpunker- I agree, dkm always good- i will be in baltimore for social d, i dont understand the whole mest thing either but alas, seeing mike is worth the 25 bucks alone -oldpunker- Fucking Tom Jones tickets the 9:30 Club are $75!!! Holy shit. I haven't been checking the dates... Hey sickboi, you hitting the social d show in dc or baltimore? -oldpunker- junior high for me was 93-95....i was mostly listening to the whole mainstream grunge thing (stp, nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam) and green day (dookie was HUGE). I didnt really get into punk until 1996 when i was turned on to rancid, the bosstones, nofx and op ivy. I loved these guys 'way back when'. Ever since I got the 'cinema beer nuts' compilation back in the summer of 97 (same day I picked up sick of it all's - built to last...damn how do i remember this?) the one track that stood out the most was mustard plug's 'you'. I don't like this band. When they opened for Youth Brigade, they were assholes. Jr. high for me, 80-84.....real fuckin punk, all of it-oldpunker- some great songs on here. a couple of my all time favortie ska tunes. RBF's Beer vs. Mustard Plug's Beer, go! Middle school was like 93-95 for me. I listened to a shitload of Green Day, Screeching Weasel, Nofx and Operation Ivy (and pretty much the entire Lookout! Catalog at the time) "junior high was 96-99. bad religion - the gray race, goldfinger - s/t, lifetime - jersey's best dancers, pennywise - full circle" I'm 4 years old and the only record I listen to is Raw Power junior high was 96-99. bad religion - the gray race, goldfinger - s/t, lifetime - jersey's best dancers, pennywise - full circle. does this have "the freshmen" on it? my turn. junior high for me was 91-94. i was listening to nirvana, smashing pumpkins, stone temple pilots, weezer, green day, offspring and hole. -10 scene points for the pumpkins and stp thing. Jeez I feel old. Junior high for me was 94-97. However this was one of my favorite High School bands. Mustard Plug, being the band I have seen live most often (like, we're talking double digits) always reminded me of bouncing souls when they play. They are just so goddamn fun to watch. I used to love getting hacked to pieces with the meat cleaver when they played mr. smiley. Great review.. im glad to see that while listing fav bands of the late 90s no one is listing ska bands. ska has always been gay and always will be. late 90's....blink, green day, offspring, rancid, nirvana, bloodhound gang, mxpx, anti flag, dropkick, us bombs, murphys law, goldfinger, weezer, sex pistols, nofx In Jr. High I was all over Pennywise, the Sex Pistols, and slowly buying all the punk-o-ramas. Jr. High for me was 97-99. Great years for ska. best ska band of the late 90s was smash mouth. oh how you all forget. this band's ok.. but when i'm in the mood for some ska, there are other better bands to listen to If this thread's heading that way...my favorite bands of late junior high / early high school had to be Less Than Jake, Blink, Green Day, the Suicide Machines, Limp, NOFX, the Ataris, Lagwagon, Millencolin, RX Bandits, Catch 22, No Motiv, Autopilot Off, Saves the Day, and Alkaline Trio off the top of my head. It's nice to know I'd still consider a few of these all-time favorites. That and I'm really not that old / far removed. Junior high was the early 2000's, and I was way into Lagwagon, NOFX, and Good Riddance. Ah, the good old days.
