Years before keyboard-backed pop-punk bands like Motion City Soundtrack and Mêlée were gaining national attention, a humble quartet out of Pennsylvania decided to do something different. After two highly-regarded and fast-paced pop-punk releases á la early Blink 182 on Go-Kart Records, the band literally turned its sound upside-down, much to the chagrin of their loyal fans.

The result was catastrophic for Weston. They threw in the towel shortly thereafter, and have remained in almost complete obscurity ever since (try googling "Weston"). Luckily for us (those who didn't jump the bandwagon when Weston departed from their established sound), Weston left us with one final gift: The Massed Albert Sounds.

I have no words to start this song / But I bet you'll sing along / Stand up straight and listen close / `Cause I just quit rock and roll
The opening line says it all. This was an entirely new path for Weston. Although they didn't really "quit rock and roll" (the album is still very rockin'), The Massed Albert Sounds is a mood-swinging yet cohesive homage to loneliness, frustration, and unattainable dreams. While they do succeed on two of the slower songs, "Kiss Like an Angel" and "Volume Hater" (which begins with a beautiful a cappella intro), the vocals are usually not strong enough to hold up. Clearly the best songs on The Massed Albert Sounds are closer to the punk that they once embraced, songs like the beautiful and touching "Liz Phair," and "Summer's Over," which brings a tear to my eye nearly every fall.

This album is highly recommended for those in the punk scene who are looking for a band that was ballsy enough to try something different, even if it meant alienating most of their fans in the process. The Massed Albert Sounds is tightly-knit with thoughtful lyrics and imaginative musicianship, and undoubtedly one of the best releases to ever come from Mojo Records.

    My Score:

I agree with some of the other sentiments on here. This was for the most part a big departure from their earlier sound. There are a few really good songs and some filler.

Weston though , I feel is one of the criminally underrated bands of the last 20 years. They wrote great pop songs and Got Beat Up is one of the all time pop -punk records.

I doubt kids today have heard of them, but they are missing out on a great band.

Jim is in Cordova. Also Gill from Nooner. They're super good at what they do - which is indy rock. I think Jim's voice is even better live than on the records too which is really really damn impressive.

    My Score:

I'm going to agree with the dude below me, they weren't the same without Chuck.

Either way, this is still a decent album with some gems. "Summer's Over" might be one of the best pop-punk songs ever.

I remember seeing them play a show right before this album came out and just standing there all confused because they barely played any old stuff. Then at the end of their set, they busted out "New Shirt/Heather Lewis" and the 30 people still there went nuts, it was great. That pretty much sums up how I feel about Weston and this record, the old stuff is just way more fun.

Weston went down hill fast as soon as Chuck left the band.

Saw them open for the Blue Meanies and Reel Big Fish many years ago. The crowd just sat down during their set which was unfortunate.

The double live disc with Doc Hopper that Go-Kart put out is classic. All Weston's best songs and some rantings by Chuck in between songs.

    My Score:

Always enjoyed this album, and never understood why it didn't catch on...probably because it was on a label known for ska (Mojo Records....Pilfers, RBF, Goldfinger)

Wow..I read the post i made below this one..I really need to learn to type better..but heres to Weston..I might be 25 now, but when i listen to their albums it makes me want to relive my highschool eyars

I first heard Weston when my friends took me to a convert at Lupos in Bethlehem for my birthday..it was shortly after Got Beat Up came out..I liked them then..I still do to this day. I thought Matinee was a great yet underrated album among their fanbase, but for some reason I wasn't too thrilled with Mass Albert. In the years since, I've come to like this album and really wish I could find their japanese only release "return to mono"..though supposedly a few members of the group dont' even have copies of this...

I wonder how Dave and Jims current bandsa re working out...

    My Score:

score is for real life story of teenage rebellion... i don't have this one.

weston ruled though. got the chance to see them open for h2o and black train jack at the wetlands when i was in high school. awesome. blink 182 should give these guys all their royalties.

    My Score:

"They never closed my giant quotation marks. I'm not sure how I feel about that."

Now that you pointed it out, its bugging me. Its like a wound that never closes. A giant quoted wound. Unclosed, stretching forever to the "abyss

    .....

weston is a band I could not have believed existed had I not stumbled on it.

Utterly fantastic pop-punk, heavy on the pop.

Its the kind of pop-punk the 'kids' listen to now but they weren't some huge label band, and they didn't fucking annoy you.

They were the band you got into when you had thought besides ALL there just wasn't going to be a band who could do pop without embarassing themselves.

    wyzo

    1. Weston Side Connection

Posted by superdude on 2005-10-16 20:53:34

This review was pretty good, but here's how I would make it better:

    1. It doesn't mention if they have beef with anyone

    2. Weston Side!

    3. Ahahaha

    4. Weston Side Story!

    5. Ahahaha

    6. Ain't no party like a Weston side party!

    7. KABAM!

    Bedford > Weston

Got Beat Up was not that good, but this album has some solid moments.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 5:28 PM (EDT)

this album was ok but, "Matinee" and "Return to Mono" have much better songs than this one did....even though the remake of "Liz Phair" sounds better than the original version

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 4:55 PM (EDT)

This album has it's moments. El differente is totally kick-ass. Weston and Digger are 2 of the few bands that I would let fuck my girlfriend.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 2:04 PM (EDT)

Got Beat Up is one of the best albums ever... even the song that kinda sounds like Toad the Wet Sproket...
But I can't say i ever liked this record.... though its still good to see Weston being reviewed so many years after the fact.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 1:50 PM (EDT)

This album never did it for me.

Got Beat Up, however, was amazing.

    My Score:

i didnt "jump the bandwagon," this album just sucked, and wasn't a style that appeals to my ears.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 10:35 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

weston was my favorite band all through high school. i really wanted to like this record, but it didn't do anything for me. it sounded so forced and a good half of it was halfassed re-recordings of songs from 'return to mono.'

get 'got beat up' or 'matinee' instead

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 3:04 AM (EDT)

I'm so glad you posted this album. Weston is one of the most underrated pop punk bands. they are missed.

Got Beat Up. Flat out, good.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 2:56 AM (EDT)

Love Songs for the Retarded was pretty good.

    Matinee was amazing.

Haven't even listened to this album. hmm.

Joykiller IS an amazing and underrated band.

    Posted by Mute98 on 2005-10-16 02:35:26

    the joykiller were amazing

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 2:31 AM (EDT)

You wanna know a great album mostly ignored by the punk communty???

    The joykiller-Three

Fuck you douchebags I like it.

Tell me you just didn't compare Weston to Blink 182...
