There's just not the same market for token metalcore releases anymore. From Autumn to Ashes and Poison the Well are likely seeing their popularity wane by the day. And maybe it's for no other reason than the fickle, trend-following public, at no fault of those bands' artistic merit, or lack thereof. In any event, nobody slipped this information onto the desks of anyone at Sold State Records, because I'm reviewing the latest effort from Haste the Day, When Everything Falls.

Unfortunately so.

This album seems to be a sort of clusterfuck at times, like the band is trying to emulate At the Gates one moment, then Fuel the next. Lead singer Jimmy Ryan has a great, forceful scream that is obviously crafted in the Scandinavian black metal tradition. The Fuel comparison sees life when either the bassist or guitarist attempt to sing, quickly turning a raging metal track into TRL nü-metal fodder. The album-closing "Long Way Down" represents precisely what I'm referring to. Only this song is reversed, more so dominated by the poor singing than the screaming with very basic rhythms and guitars that are barely audible. It's only somewhat saved with a guitar solo at the very end that's far too little, far too late. What started very promising and ended promising cannot account for the filler between it. “Fallen” begins things with some chunky guitar riffs, leading into Ryan’s harsh vocals and some guitar squalling while the pace keeps increasing in speed. Though, then the singing comes in, and all momentum is seemingly lost.

“The Perfect Night” suffers a similar fate, starting with promise, and quickly sinking into territory far below mediocre. That’s what’s so disheartening about this album as a whole, is that the band are obviously extremely competent and cohesive musicians, but the structures of the songs don’t allow them any chance to show off the skill. The one bright spot in this cloudy, muddled album has to be the cliché song title of the year award winner, “Bleed Alone.”

Regardless of the name, for two minutes and thirteen seconds, the song effectively ravages your speakers and ears in a fury of lightning quick chord progressions, relentless and sound drumming, and terrific vocals. What makes the vocals here stand out? There’s no singing. Not two nor twenty seconds of it, and for that, the song stands out far and above the rest. That is, until the acoustic “Instrumental” breaks in to show the band's ‘diversity.’ Right. Crap, pure, and utter crap. Speaking of which, don’t bother looking at the liner notes, as there’s nothing of merit to be found anywhere in there; "The beauty in your eyes still sustains me / And I know if were to spit in your face / You would take me back / You would love me / You would take me back / If I were to stab you in the heart / You would bleed for me as if it made you happy." You get the idea.

This is essentially just a very frustrating release. The band sounds like Darkest Hour at times, but the singing ends that comparison quickly. There’s small dashes of greatness, and spots of talent and good songwriting, but it’s thrown by the wayside in favor of fad and formula. The singing can even become, dare I say, catchy, as in “All I Have,” but it’s still formulaic, contrived, and really, not all that good. If more kids start staying away from releases like this, maybe we’ll all win, and they’ll disappear altogether.

Good album, its got its bad parts, but it has its good. I don't mind the signing, but I guess its just the opinion of the listener. If you're going into it thinking its a metalcore album, you're not going to like it, if your going into it as a melodic hardcore album, you'll appreciate it, although I have heard better singers, his voice is good. The screaming is insane and some of the best i've heard around. This album is great and I recommended it fully.

I didn't like the band at first, but the album is actually really good. This is quite possibly the worst review i've ever read, however he got one thing right, although very good musicians they don't really get time to shine...but then, not every band is Avenged Sevenfold :)

I'd just like to make a comment on this reviewers knowledge of what they listened to. The bassist is a very talented singer, but that's not my main issue with this review. My main issue is that the reviewer made harsh comments about the song "Long Way Down." That's fine if you dont like the song, but get the facts straight. This song is a cover of a song done by the Goo Goo Dolls...and the solo that is considered less than mediocre by the reviewer is hit dead on - exactly like the original...take up the beef with the band who wrote it.

    My Score:

Before I read this review, I knew exactly what it would say.

"These guys just do the same thing and their singing sucks."

Guess what? I was right. Guess who's wrong? You are.
Haste the day is full to the brim of talent. There's nothing wrong with the singing here. The song structures are made basically the same way, but who cares? If music was made just for song structures, every song would have a billion different parts and would sound terrible.

Haste the Day knows what they're doing. You can't say you don't like these guys because "all metalcore sucks". the guy who said that's a dumb faggot and shouldn't be writing reviews about metalcore in the first place. If you don't like some type of genre of the music, you're not going to like a metalcore release. I wish everyone was half as smart of you.

I was disappointed with this release. I thought that HTD would put a slight bit more diversity on this album and not make most of the sounds basically the same.

They put on a wonderful live show however.

    My Score:

Alright, anybody who does not like Haste the Day is a loser. I know everyone has their opinion and preference...and some people are stupid and should not have an opinion...like the jerk-off who wrote the review. This album was done very well other than they are all in the same key, but oh no, end of the world right? To start, how can you diss a christain band? It would take a brass-balled jesus hating nazi to bad mouth a band who gives a christain message. Regardless, the guitar playing is amazing as Jason Barnes is amazing. The vocals are frickin wonderful. I would rate the vocalist 3rd all-time behind Freddy Mercury and Maynard James Keenan. It is not and I quote "a clusterfuck"...f-you! I dislike screaming music with the exception of this band, they in my opinion, are a unique band that I tully love. Sure they are from Carmel...that automatically makes them douche-bags, but the band makes up for it. Stop bad-mouthing, and say something constructive you god damn nazis. By the way, Substance is still the best song by Haste the Day.

    My Score:

Any reviewer who puts a band down just because they are not original is an idiot. Why the hell do you think the word "genre" exists? In this case, Haste the Day is screamo/punk metal. How original can so many bands get????????? If your in a band, I bet that non of you fucker will ever get to play your own "original" music. As long as the band does what they do well, I say they are good. Haste the Day are good!!!!!

""I take my reviews plenty seriously"
Reviewing an album and not realizing who wrote what songs, I believe, is not serious enough"

Especially when it says the song is a cover in the press release, which if you actually got it in the mail instead of downloading it like you probably did, you would have known. I'm looking at the press release right now and yup, it says there's a Goo Goo Dolls cover. Part of "taking your reviews plenty serious" (which is as grammatically incorrect as anything you've pointed out) entails doing your research. You thought you'd get a couple chuckles by writing the most cliché ridden piece of crap ever, and you failed.

You guys keep complaining about the singing. Do you not understand that they are a melodic hardcore band? this record sucks because it sucks like the whole metalcore genre sucks

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 4:42 PM (EDT)

Just like clockwork with these kids online.

Go ahead and rip apart the fact that I bought and enjoy Haste The Day. It just furthers my point that there is no respect for any artist anywhere. There are tons of artists that I do not listen to, but I sure as hell do not go putting any lame ass opinions of them on the web. Also I don't degrade them or their fans.

But yet again, I forget it's the world wide web.

Hey, man. You were the one who bought the Haste The Day album.

That's some astonishing detective work there.

This other "Anonymous" poster says "grow the fuck up kids" when he is the one calling people "retards" and stating that others will write "stupid reviews."

All that I was getting at is the following:

When I purchased this album and listened to it all the way through, when I got to "Long Way Down" I knew something was different about it. It didn't sound like a typical HTD song. So I proceeded to read the Booklet and saw that it was not written by anyone in HTD and read the name of who did write it. I never heard the original, but I listen to music a lot and had an ear that they did not make that song.

But this is my entire fault for thinking that this site had some respectable listeners and viewers in the “music community.”

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 6:44 AM (EDT)

    This site is hysterical.

Step 1: People write a review of an album
Step 2: Retard kids disagree with the opinion of the reviewer
Step 3: People flame reviewer anonymously
Step 4: Reviewer apologises for not knowing a goo goo dolls song when he hears one.

Grow the fuck up kids. If you dont like the reviews, dont read them, or fuck off! Go and write your own stupid reviews on your own stupid website.

"I take my reviews plenty seriously"
Reviewing an album and not realizing who wrote what songs, I believe, is not serious enough.

Typical to bring up grammatical and spelling errors. Always good to worry about how everything is typed on a website like this.

And i'm not bitching; I am just posting on a site I occasionaly viewed. Oops, I missed an “l” I’m sorry.

Posted by Anchors on 2005-10-19 23:10:35

I take my reviews plenty seriously, and I didn't know it wa s a cover, obviously because I haven't heard the original. I haven't heard every song ever recorded, as you must have.

And there's so much grammatically and spelling wise wrong with your bitching, I don't know where to start. But I don't know how credible you want to seem when you can't discern the difference between "you're," and "your." You fucking clown.

I apologize for not taking my interests as seriously as you'd have liked. My sincerest.

It's definitely got potential. It could actually be good if they didn't interrupt all their good songs with generic singing choruses. The song structures suck. The screaming is good, though. The title song could have been good but they way overdid the same riff over and over. I disagree with the reviewer about the last song, though-I really like it.
