For Texas is the Reason fans being first associated with Solea through this, the band's first full-length, a self-titled effort, hearing lead singer / guitarist Garret Klahn's voice again should be a treat in itself. However, they'll also be pleased to know that what Solea brings to the table overall is a sound that makes a lot of sense considering the pedigree. Ex-members of Samiam/Knapsack and Sense Field fill out the lineup, and Solea's second wave emo-influenced (actually, can we say "influenced" if the members at hand are the influence? Or in the very least, part of?) alternative pop/rock is executed in a similar fashion. It's thoughtful and reflective, yet slightly playful with a strong pop sense, a collection of songs crafted with a superb sense of melody and a sense of simplicity -- I'm thinking Promise Ring middle of their career here -- that seems all too watered down by the aforementioned bands' latest wave of followers, but sincere and old-fashioned in the context of Solea.

absolutely fantastic stuff. Samiam were criminally underrated. Solea are just as great, Score is for Sergie and Samiam officially ending the hiatus. this album is so much better than anything in the genre. Sure, it isn't as well produced, maybe not as well played...but there is an honesty and sincerity that is lacking in 99% of melodic bands that play with an edge. Don't compare to samiam or texas is the reason...imagine if you never heard those band and you would be so happy to discover this band. maybe it takes a bunch of older guys that have been in through the ringer in the music industry and have no expectations to make a record this good. score is for new samiam record next year. This review was pretty good, but here's how I'd make it better: why did i give this 4.5 stars HUGE titr fan. like samiam and knapsack a lot. liked the first two EPs a lot. this felt like a bit of a step down in all honesty. i didn't like the rerecordings as much and something about the record just doesn't grab me that much. still, it's garret and that's enough. three stars sounds about right. Very good review. I agree with just about the entire thing. Thank god Samiam is recording again, though, because this band was not going to cut it as a replacement. well they have enough starpower in the lineup for me to at least sample. texas is the reason was great. |
