Wow, Owls! definitely came out of nowhere with their debut full-length this past year, Pick Your Patterns, to remind everyone -- or at least a fair handful -- what screamo actually is (a consistently unterrible genre, really), and what it can actually convey (raw emotion in short, anti-theatrical bursts). So needless to say, I was pretty stoked to hear of the occurrence of more material from the Richmond, VA-based act. It's delivered here in a stylishly packaged, colored and imbalanced split 7" between themselves and metallic hardcore act the SetUp.

Just saw Wow Owls with Latterman. Latterman was awesome. I guess there are 3 (maybe more?) different bands with The SetUp as their name. The SetUp on this split 7" is definately NOT the dreamy indie emo bullshit band. The band on the 7" is myspace.com/thesetuprules. I was trying to check if the setup was the belgian hardcore band (or german or whatever), so i went to http://www.purevolume.com/thesetup . That band was fucking awesome, and i HATE dreamy indie rock. right, cause, little known fact, Unbroken invented the phrase "the setup". Just saw Wow Owls with Latterman. Latterman was awesome. In case anyone was interested in what the 7" looks like, there's a quick snapshot of the vinyl and foldout, die-cut packaging right here. Just as long as they present fifty-thousand watts of goodwill. I can't wait to pick this up. I got the Wow Owls lp and thought it was only okay. But I fucking love the Setup and I have all their shit. I would definately suggest checking out the Setup's debut full length "Tuned to Drop Dead" and their split with "Schematic of a Waking Life" ep - as this is what Off Minor would sound like if they listened to more metal and less jazz. Amazing bands though, and great review!!! great band, good fun music. is the setup's name an unbroken reference? New material from Wow, Owls! so soon? Neat. |
