Wow. Rudimentary Peni. The name pretty much says it all. This band is often lumped in with the anarcho-punk sub-genre, mostly because of the booklet that was included in the original pressings of their Death Church LP. However, RP is so much more than a Crass copy (cough, DIRT, cough).

This album is a compilation of their first two EPs: The self-titled, and Farce, which was released on Crass Records. Musically, this is pretty, for lack of a better term, cool. Most songs are under a minute, the instrumentation is fast and almost pre-grind, and the vocals from guitarist/singer Nick Blinko are “fuckin’ insane!” On the first EP, Blinko screams, wails, mews, and produces pretty much any high-pitched, odd sound that you can think of. The lyrics are bizarre, mostly focusing on Blinko’s mental problems (he has schizophrenia) and bassist Grant’s left-wing politics. The apocalyptic nature of the music, as well as Blinko’s obsession with death, places this album more in the “death rock” sub-genre.

The second EP on the disc, Farce, is much more musically directed. Nick limits his vocal style a little, making the songs sound more similar and much more generic. However, the lyrics on Farce are more political, making it seem more like the band has a defined “statement.”

The artwork is some of the best, most terrifying ever. It literally gave me nightmares. It’s like a Tim Burton drawing, but about a million times better. Nick Blinko is apparently recognized throughout the “outsider art” community. Oh, and on “Defined by Age,” one of the lyrics is “the older generation or the youth of today,” which always makes me think (in best New York accent) “Fuck yeah! Youth of fuckin’ Today!” Anyway, Rudimentary Peni gets 8 stars, Farce gets 6.

So... has this just been re-released? Seems like that to me, at least I've never seen it available on vinyl before.

The name comes from when the bassist was in (medical? school). He was studying biology of rabbits, and was told by his prof. that when a female rabbit is a fetus, its clitoris is a "rudimentary penis". found that out from the MRR interview.

I wouldn't be so quick to call Dirt a Crass ripoff. They might not be innovative (which Crass certainly were later on), but they've got the extremity certainly covered. They might be a punk band that still sounds awful to more "normal" people; that girl's voice is nuts.

Is new Conflict any good at all?

Flux was a pretty good band. I'd still pick Conflict over most of the other bands. "This is the A.L.F." is a genius song for it's time. It's full of heart and they sound as if they're playing their fingers off. Plus, off of their second cd, they had quite a few catchy diddies. "Crazy Goverments" anyone?

MDC released the "Multi-Death Corporations" EP on Crass, I think. MDC and the Sleeping Dogs/Braintrust were the only 2 US bands to release anything on Crass records.

Flux were awesome... Also, don't forget The Mob or Poison Girls... Maybe they weren't on Crass, but they were definitely part of that scene. Also, MDC released something on Crass. Maybe the UK release of "John Wayne was a Nazi?"

Zounds were another good Crass band. Really dark, post-punkish type stuff. Flux of Pink Indians also had a few good songs (most notably "Tube Disaster").

Honestly, I can't think of any Crass bands that I actively dislike. Even Dirt was at least amusing when the squeaky girl was singing.

They weren't the least bit political after Death Church. Grant (the bass player) was the political one and all the post-Death Church lyrics were written by Nick.

Nick Blinko has to be the craziest man ever involved in punk and hardcore. No doubt. I want to read his book so badly.

I have A-Sides and all the songs are fantastic, except they are tracked as six or so in one, which is completely obnoxious.

"Death rock?" Wha? Hold up, this isn't fucking "Death Church."

These are their EP's. They're basically hardcore punk emphasizing on melody with some of the best vocals ever lent to the genre. If you actually listen beneath the blood-curdling cries of Blinko, it's quit well written.

His lyrics use fantastic/schizoid imagery, but they are still firmly a "political band."
