Broken Social Scene is so hip right now.

If one were to examine the year-end reviews of any hipster indie fanzine, you would probably find the same album up top of all of them; yes, ironically, it is the album in question here. Three years after the band’s magnificent You Forgot It in People, the group signed on Stars (also so hip right now) front-woman Amy Millan to handle some lead vocal work in preparation for actually topping its predecessor. Does this self-titled disc rise to the occasion? Girly pants, ugly glasses, and pretentiousness all scream yes, and in hopefully the only time I will have to agree with hipster paraphernalia, I whole-heartedly concur.

Broken Social Scene is a less cohesive effort from the band. The songs aren’t as structured as before, and that fact alone will turn some people off already. On this self-titled effort, most of the fourteen tracks reek of noise and bombastic jams, as opposed to the standard formula of a song, but it works well. There is so much going on here that, even if you aren’t too sure of all that is happening at once, you can’t help but feel that it just sounds good. Even the noisier parts, like the second half of the album’s opener “Our Faces Split the Coast in Half,” and the bridge of the contender for song of the year “7/4 (Shoreline)” sound pleasant in the mix of the song, which is something that not too many of these hipster bands can gloat about. The tracks here are all over the place, and range from dancier, hip-hop-infused tracks like “Windsurfing Nation,” to more subdued, prettier ballads, such as “Swimmers,” where vocalist recruit Millan truly shines bright, with her breathy, yet strangely sexy vocals take charge.

The album is a tad top-heavy, though, and gets increasingly tough to listen to as it drags on. “Superconnected” and “Handjobs for the Holidays” offer nothing special to the listener, and serve only as precursors to the album’s gigantic closer, the nine-minute “It’s All Gonna Break,” which has more ups and downs than you can shake a stick at, as well as an intense outro and an overall feeling that this is the note an album should end on.

For an album that doesn’t play by the rules, it sure is accessible. I don’t see many people not enjoying this album, and I truly think that there’s something for everyone here. Broken Social Scene have touched upon all things that make people want to listen to music, and have executed it with extreme precision.

Standout Tracks:

  • “7/4 (Shoreline)”
  • “Windsurfing Nation”
  • “Swimmers”
  • “It’s All Gonna Break"

Amy Millan does not sing Swimmers, it is Emily Haines, who has been in the band for years, Amy doesnt actualy have any "lead" vocals, so yeah.... fyi

I like that coke machine glow site. The list for "top 12 songs on OK Computer" is fucking hilarious.

www.bornbackwards.com has some good reviews to.

I never understood the hate on Pitchfork. Well maybe people got pissed that they do some gimmick reviews (well, used to), and rag on shit like The Mars Volta. But, seriously, their reviews are well written and cover huge range of music. They are based in indie, sure, but that doesn't stop them from writing accurate and smart reviews for ska, hip hop, modern pop, avant garde... basically everything.

But if you really hate pitchfork and can't explain why, check out this other site Cokemachineglow. It's the only other site I've found that can claim as great and consistent of reviews as Pitchfork (and they know a lot more about hip hop).

yeah dude you definitely have pitchfork's balls all over your face

but that is a very good list regardless

    i enjoy pitchfork

Um, Death Cab DID release an album this year, and you hate Pitchfork? I'll admit that I'm a regular Pitchfork reader, and that list seems ripped straight from their website.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 10:30 PM (EST)

OK...Thanksgiving is over. We can now officially start discussing the Best albums of 2005. Honestly I think the year was pretty lame. Myspace got Big! But Fuck Myspace. Pitchfork still sucks. Not that 2004 was anything special but 2005 will be remembered for few things. To my knowledge Death Cab didnt release an album this year and those Deluxe albums (who the fuck buys them) Say Anything! Alkaline Trio! Senses Fail! werent released either. I love torrent files and I still hate paying for music.

    Almost forgot...Heres my Top 10
    01. The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
    02. My Morning Jacket - Z
    03. Danger Doom - The Mouse & The Mask
    04. The New Lows - The FREE EP
    05. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - S/T
    06. Sufjan Stevens - Illonois
    07. Troubled Hubble - Making Beds in a Burning House
    08. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, Its Morning
    09. Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
    10. The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

I guess I'm probably one of the below mentioned 'pitchfork fanboys' but even so I really find this to be the most overrated band ever. I want to like it. I like Feist and Stars. But I just can't get into BSS. They aren't bad per se, but they just don't entertain.

"Is "7/4 Shoreline" bragging about the time signiture? I teach drums to 6th graders who can bust out 7/4. You just have to be able to count to 7. congratulations."

I don't think it's bragging... And also, regardless of it being easy or simple most contemporary rock bands still don't do it.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at 12:11 AM (EST)
    My Score:

No wonder the band took three years between albums. They must have guessed that some people would almost be hoping this album would be a failure. I have followed the band pretty closely and haven't noticed any swelled heads. It would be nice if people celebrated their success and were happy there is a group willing to experiment, instead of making snide remarks about them. Are some people a little bit jealous? It's easy to do the same old thing over and over if it is successful the first time, but it takes courage to go in a new direction.

Posted by skaboom on 2005-11-22 10:06:37

For some reason I just can't get into this like I did with YFIIP. That album had a perfect sequencing of soft songs and heavy songs, sparse and cluttered. The biggest difference I notice is the use of strings. They're on BSS, but it just doesn't really add all that much. When the strings show up on Anthems for a 17-Year Old Girl and Pitter Patter Goes My Heart show up, it transforms the song from a whimsical pop song to a beautiful masterpiece.

And 7/4 Shoreline bugs the hell out of me. If there was ever a way to kill a dancy number, they managed to do it by giving it the most retarded time signature ever.

There's so much depth to this CD and it's a difficult CD to wrap your head around when you listen to it. Just when you think you figure a song out, you hear something else that fucks you up. It's awesome.

It's the audio equivalent of driving down the highway in rush hour looking only through your rearview mirror.
