Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

When I first started getting into the underground music scene back in high school, I was fortunate to have been a part of Chicago’s booming underground punk scene. One of the bands I quickly fell in love with was 88 Fingers Louie. Shortly after getting their first full-length Behind Bars, I found out that the band had broken up; the break-up however did not last long, and they came back stronger than ever with the comeback album Back on the Streets. Once again, 88 Fingers Louie would disband shortly after that release, but not before releasing the last of their material with none other than Philadelphia, PA’s Kid Dynamite. Now, I know just about everyone has heard about Kid Dynamite, so I won’t go into too much detail surrounding their history, but I will say that these two bands came together in 1999 to release one of the best split EPs ever (in my opinion).

Starting off the EP is 88 Fingers Louie with “Out There,” one of their heavier songs in their collection. This short number then bursts into one of my all-time favorite songs “Slow Chorus Overlap;” even now when I listen to this song I still find myself getting the chills. This song and the next track “Reparation” are two songs that cannot close out a band's history any better, and truly bring to life the term “saved the best for last.”

Next up on the split is Kid Dynamite. Like 88 Fingers Louie, they also called it quits shortly after this release at the beginning of 2000. Kid Dynamite contributes two short tracks that showcase the band's blend of melodic punk and hardcore, “Heart A Tact” followed by “Breakin’s A Memory.” To close out the disc, Kid Dynamite pulls off a great cover of the Black Flag song “Rise Above” and really closes out their career as a band just as good as 88 Fingers Louie’s songs.

If there was ever a split that needs to be owned by anyone into the punk/hardcore scene it’s this one. It’s amazing how well these two bands sound together on this split and how both their careers seem to end here. I mentioned it earlier and I’ll say it again, this disc really brings life to the term “saved the best for last.” Even though this CD might not even break the fifteen-minute mark, the staying power and intensity of these 6 songs show the listener why these two groups are legends in their hometown scenes. This disc is a must have. **9.5/10**

    My Score:

great CD. i bought it because Rise Against and Strike Anywhere are my favorite bands so i needed to hear their influences. this CD definetly doesn't disapoint.

i've heard all the songs except ''out there'' fuck...
the kd songs all kick fuckin ass and the two 88 fl louie songs i heard too

kickass. "Out There" explodes with heavy-metal fury that couldn't open the CD better. "slow chorus overlap" is cool i guess. "reparation" gets kinda boring and sounds alot like rise against (not a bad thing, but i'm listening to it as opposed to RPM for a reason) and the Kid Dynamite songs are incredible. "Heart a tact" is great and even has a well-defined song structure in spite of itself. and the best song on the CD "Rise Above" is a cover of the timeless black Flag song. its 1000 times better than the original, if possible. just plain explodes with rage. the guitar solo is shortened, but the passion in the vocals completely blows rollins out of the water.

I was very dissapointed by the NOFX/Rancid split.

"I've heard from at least 10 different people from all over the country that 88FL broke up on the way to a show in their town. Incredible, but how fucking lame."

    make that 11 people.
they supposedly broke up on their way to a show that i went to see in moosic, PA years back... i was convinced it was because my friend wore an 88 shirt to the show... bastard.

yes, explode and make up is the current band, and it's good.

Wow, I'm guessing that alot of these "made a commitment to band, and family is no good reason to split", and "thats the price you pay for having an alcoholic in your band" comments are coming from both people who have never really been in a band, and are also probably 15 years old, because they are pretty assinine comments to make.

I'm going to take the route of listing my 6 EPs:

    D4/Pinhead Gunpowder
    Alkaline Trio/Hot Water Music
    88 Fingers Louie/Kid Dynamite
    Hot Water Music/Leatherface
    Alkaline Trio/One Man Army
    The Chinkees/The Lawrence Arms

the story so far E.P. was pretty good....it was no 88FL but still a good listen. It was with ex-king for a day so it had that indie/post-hardcore sound to it.

I got to see one of 88's last shows at some skatepark here in IL, it was right around the time they released this disc and it was easily one of my favorite shows of all time.

"Explode and make up"??? at least they named their band after a Sugar song.

In 1999 my two favorite bands were 88 Fingers Louie and Kid Dynamite were my two favorite bands. I had no idea that this was coming out, when i accidently found it in a record store on vacation in california, it made my trip.

I was lucky enough to see 88 Fingers Louie circa 1998 somewhere in Jersey with like 50 other people. Singing "Something I Don't Know" in the front row was one of my favorite concert expirences.

Alright, last post. I swear. I found what seems to be Dennis' current band, Explode and Make Up. They have a myspace that was last visited today, which leads me to believe they're active. Anyways, here it is:

I did a Google search of Undercast, and it came up with this. Weird. Also, you can hear them at www.purevolume.com/undercast.

"Family commitments or not, he made a commitment to tour with his band for a few weeks numerous times and had a history of bailing out on their fans. "

Exactly. You don't just back out on your band unless you have a damn good reason - he didn't. That's the price you pay for touring with an alcoholic.

    Posted by david_arquette on 2005-12-12 19:16:21

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. Did you happen to hear the EP? If so, what was it like?

Posted by maverick on 2005-12-12 19:06:17

The Story So Far is the other one (I believe). They put out one EP then seemingly vanished.

    Posted by david_arquette on 2005-12-12 18:39:11

Dennis went on to be in at least two more bands. One was called Undercast and the other's name escapes me. I have a few Undercast mp3's floating around somewhere on my laptop. They're nothing special though.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 12, 2005 at 6:31 PM (EST)

Family commitments or not, he made a commitment to tour with his band for a few weeks numerous times and had a history of bailing out on their fans.
It doesn't look good when three members of a 88FL show up to watch the rest of the bands on tour but aren't playing cuz their singer needs to take a time out. But then he's ready to do another show 2 days later. Maybe he's in a different space now and is more mature and that's fine, but facts are still facts.

I hope he is now able to get back out there and put out some kick ass music.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 12, 2005 at 5:34 PM (EST)

wow, spreading a rumour about the singer (dennis) being a dickhead, is very dickheadish indeed. Nothing could be further from the truth. He is a fantastic guy, who had family commitments before touring commitments. He also has a new band, and I've heard demos of it, and it rules. Fast and heavy, not unlike the stuff on this here incredible split with another band that also broke up too soon.
Think twice before posting things that demean anothers character that you've never met.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 12, 2005 at 1:49 PM (EST)

88's singer was supposedly a dickhead. They constantly backed out of shows in smaller cities when they didn't feel like playing only to show up a few days later in a larger area. I remember they were supposed to be a part of the Snow Jam show coming through Canada twice in the mid to late 90's. Both times I was supposed to see them, they never showed up and the other bands said that they have band issues and seem to do that often. I heard that they would play select cities like Toronto and Montreal and Vancouver but would skip the smaller dates in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Regina. Seems like a pretty lame thing to do and an expensive way to tour across Canada without being paid very often.

That being said, Back on the Streets and this split are absolutely killer. Wish I could have saw them live but life will go on.

    My Score:

This album is totally rad. I bought in San Francisco during the summer of '99 when I had to go to my neo-con step-family reunion. I left it in the car while we ate and the vinyl warped. I like it better that way.

going back to 96 i remember 88 fingers were susposed to open for good riddance when they played a tiny all ages venue and heard they broke up on the way to detroit. that actually seemed to happen every time i can remember going to a show where they were susposed to play. rather odd when you think about it

Not sure if it's out of print, but it's common on vinyl. Black vinyl, anways. Now if you've got the colored vinyl version, you might make a few bucks off of it

I bought this when it came out in 99. I remember going to an AFI/88 fingers louie show right after that, and we heard that 88 quit the tour and broke up. This, and their last album are excellent and made me mourn their passing that much more. But as the lord taketh awayeth, the lord gaveth me rise against, and all was well and good in punkrockland.

Yeah that KD cover is awesome too. It makes you wonder how good those black flag records would sound if the production was any good. These days, i'd rather hear the cover.

    My Score:

isn't this sucker out of print? i saw it just a week ago at a local record shop used. but i decided that since i have half of the split (the KD songs are on Cheap Shots, Youth Anthems) i figured i'd just buy the one other thing i found that i know is rare: a 12" of Redemption 87's first record. i was torn, yet only had money for one. sigh. maybe i'll go buy this just so i own everything from KD except the demo tapes...

oh yeah, and 88 Fingers Louie is a great fucking band as well.

I only got into Kid Dynamite somewhat recently, and I really love them. Their "Rise Above" cover is one of the best covers I've ever heard, and both "Heart A Tact" and (especially) "Living Daylights" are quality fucking songs. I don't think "Daylights" is on this one, but I thought I'd mention it anyway considering I love it so much.
