Alkaline Trio's Hell Yes 7" is absolutely amazing, and both songs are two of the best that the band has made, period.

Side A has "Hell Yes," with the chorus in true A3 fashion going "bless me dark father, I have sinned, I've done it before and I'll do it again." This song is one of numerous masterpieces made by Matt Skiba, and if it would have been on From Here to Imfirmary, I would be calling that the best record ever made by anyone at any time.

The B-side, a Dan Andriano song, is "My Standard Break from Life." This is, as usual, a very fine compliment to a Matt Skiba tune. The guitar intros for both are very similar, but still have a very different feel to each; this is something that not many bands can pull off.

I would say "go out and buy this now!," but it is out of print from Lookout!, and I wish you good luck in finding one. When you do, it's worth it...believe me.

    My Score:

After Maybe I'll Catch Fire all of matts songs sound the same. I think they could of ended their career after good mourning and I would of been happy. Dan needs to start Tuesday back up.

while we're at it...chris or bren in the lawrence arms..ill say chris has the gems bren has the sing along favorites that all can enjoy. i definitely gotta go for chris throughout ghost stories (minus chicago is burning my personal fav song)

    My Score:

yuo can get both these songs off comps.

the first tune is on a vagrant sampler, and the other is on a take action comp.

    My Score:

"Skiba makes this band, and it would not be Alkaline Trio without him. Whereas, I think the band could easily go on minus Andriano"

Whoever wrote that is fucking insain! Skiba compliments Andriano, and vice versa. Trust me, if A3 never got Dan, we wouldn't have gotten "Another Innocent Girl" or "You've Got So Far to Go" or "I Lied My Face Off". Skiba is great... I agree, and "Hell Yes" fucking rules, its one of the band's best songs, but they both write gems almost every time they pick up pens.

My favorite Dan song is "She Took Him To The Lake" and my favorite Matt song is "Goodbye Forever." On any given day either could be my favorite Alkaline Trio song. However, I think Scruffy is right. The two compliment each other extremely well because their voices are so different. Same with Chris and Brendan from The Lawrence Arms or, although I'm bound to get flak for this, Mark and Tom from Blink182. I haven't heard Dan's solo split, but Matt's kicks a lot of ass...

Posted by Scruffy on 2005-12-19 13:00:58

Well, if you count the percentage of Dan's songs that are sweet versus the percentage of Matt's, Dan scores higher. Dan may not write as many, but sometimes Matt writes too many.
Also, Dan writes far less groan-inducing lines.
Also, Dan grounds the band in reality. Without him, they really would be as bad as MCR.
Also, It wouldn't be Alkaline Trio without either of them. Honestly, I think this whole argument is somewh of a fallacy, since neither one of them is as good without the other. Just look at their respective solo CDs. They both lack something.

    My Score:

...and if it would have been on From Here to Imfirmary, I would be calling that the best record ever made by anyone at any time.

i don't know why it wasn't included...it would have fit in perfectly with the rest of the album. though wasn't it on the japanese version or something? good stuff though, i love both of these songs and of course the trio...well, ever since they redeemed themselves with crimson.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 19, 2005 at 12:46 PM (EST)

    dans got some gems:

    actually.

all his songs on 'maybe i'll catch fire' are awesome.
he's only got two on 'goddammit' and if you can get by the whining, 'enjoy your day' is pretty good.
i like his tunes on 'from here to infirmary' also.
then comes the new stuff, which should just be classified as another band.

since when is it 'a3' i was under the impression that it was 'alk3.'

oh yeah. i have this 7". hell yes and my standard break are both pretty weak songs.

Posted by thecaptain on 2005-12-19 12:21:43

I don't see how you could argue that Dan's contributions are as good or better than Skiba's. First of all, the ratio of Skiba songs to Andriano's is about 4 to 1. With that few to choose from, Dan's would have to be pretty amazing for you to rate them higher than Skiba's, but most of them are mediocre and forgettable. He does have the occasional gem, but most are average at best.

Skiba makes this band, and it would not be Alkaline Trio without him. Whereas, I think the band could easily go on minus Andriano.

    My Score:

i have these songs on my version of from here to infirmary its the UK version.

Posted by Scruffy on 2005-12-19 09:51:43

I slapped myself in the face, but it didn't change anything. Sorry.

Honestly, it's about a perfect split with me, overall, but most of my favorites (You've Got So Far To Go, Crawl, My Standard Break From Life) are Dan's. Also, his song's on the new one are better. But I'll give Skiba that Jaked On Green Beers is their best song.

Posted by andburntherest on 2005-12-19 08:25:42

somevody review the remastered crimson demo cd for christs sake.

Posted by thecaptain on 2005-12-19 08:06:44

Anyone who said Dan's songs are better than Skiba's needs to give himself a good slap in the face. Right now. DO it.

Posted by wannabepunktony on 2005-12-19 03:58:58
    My Score:

Both of these songs are two of the best Trio songs recorded, hands down. They were put on various comps and also on the import version of one of their full-lengths I believe, so tracking them down shouldn't be too hard.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 19, 2005 at 2:10 AM (EST)

Hell yes=one of the best Trio songs ever. They play it so well at shows as well. I am very fortunate to own this. I got Dan and Matt to sign it too!

In a public post website... Does it really matter if you use shitty grammar or gramaticlly correct english? Seriously. As for the 7'.hmmmm Skiba has some gems on his side aswell. "Hell Yes" happens to be one.

you can see why hell yes was cut. Very formulaic. The b-side is better fare, dan turning in another better effort.

Skiba writes the singles, dan writes the gems.

Hey, Scott!! Find the mistake, bitch!! Hahahaha...Mr. Fat Fuck Grammar Police has been charged with a felony! Oh, I crack myself up!!!!

Seriously, though- -you suck. I'm an English major, and your writing style makes me sick to my stomach.

I'm pretty sure you can get this off of Interpunk. That's what I did around this time last year. "Standard Break" doesn't do it for me at all, but "Hell Yes" is one of my favorite Alkaline Trio songs.

if you read, i didn't say that no swearing=waste of talent

i said that as an indicator of how softer bands become as they get older (there will be a few exceptions of course)

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 4:12 PM (EST)

    This really isn't that good.

You could even say that all music made in the last 7 years is fucking shite. You could.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 2:31 PM (EST)

Not using profanity does not equal "waste of talent"

"Hell Yes" is still only alright in my book; it's definitely not their best work but it's not their worst, either.

Absolutely. But it does have a really great part in the "I've been whispering sweet nothings" bit.

    Fanboy Orgasm?

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 1:07 PM (EST)

hell yes is weak and poppy

alkaline trio, like many bands get slower and poppier as they get older. can we still call them a punk band? intriguing fact - there are mo swear words on the new album. mellowing as they get older. what a waste of talent they are becoming. total shame

    My Score:

i own this 7". these were two kick ass b-sides from the infrmary sessions.

p.s. standard break from life's amazing similarity to green day's "redundant" is absolutely classic.

I enjoyed "Hell Yes" in 9th grade.

"My Standard Break From Life" is the second-worst song the band has ever recorded, after "Dead-End Road". Oh wait... I forgot about "Good Mourning"...

Posted by KirbyPuckett on 2005-12-18 09:29:52

I'd rather listen to "Hell Yes" by Beck.

I think Hell Yes is one of their best songs - and the UK version of FHTI is definitely better for having it.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 8:59 AM (EST)

A review from a 7 inch usually doesn't get that much attention...unless it's from a shit band like this.

    Posted by punkindrublic696 on 2005-12-18 05:32:43

both songs were on the uk version of FHTI which made a better ending to the cd i think

    My Score:

Never got into either one of these songs right away, but once "My Standard Break From Life" was first released on CD (the Plea For Peace/Take Action! 2001 comp), it sat with me a lot more and ended up being one of my favorite Danny songs (the acoustic version floating around on the net from the Very Milky Christmas show is worth hearing, too).

"Hell Yes" is still only alright in my book; it's definitely not their best work but it's not their worst, either.
