damn you guys complain about everything. the band came back, played a handful of shows to some very diehard fans and made a couple bucks. big fucking deal. now go on and complain to mommy some more for not buying you airline tickets to LA to see them. "special occasions" = when they start to get low on money I saw The Overdrives open for Bigwig in February 2000. And then, of course, Josh Marsh did a stint in Bigwig from like 2001-2003 or so after the Overdrives broke up. Oh, and in case it wasn't clear, I DO know that Kid Dynamite didn't record Paradise. That, of course, would be None More Black. I don't like Lifetime, but I've also never listened to them. The Dan Yemin bands haven't made much of a dent where I live, in fact I don't even know if Dr Dan's ever been to western Canada despite our overabundance of wheat, snow and BC bud. I agree with Will about the whole, "you like Lifetime because we'll tell you to" kinda thing. Everyone said that "paradise" was the best album of this past year, but I really did not feel it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that good. Same w/Kid Dynamite's s/t album. All the songs were kind of samey, and really better for their pop-punk elements than for their hardcore. People keep on saying Dan Yemin is a genius, and all I think is, "well, he does sing kinda like Henry Rollins, so..." Ya, playing 3 whole shows. Wow they are really raking in the cash. If they really needed the money that bad, they would do a full US tour, because they would definitely sell out every show. "special occasions" = when they start to get low on money The Gym Is Neutral Territory is one of my favorite songs of all time. I got into lifetime's "hello bastards" not long after Jawbreaker broke up. They were my Jawbreaker Jr, but faster. As much as i was into the mid-nineties emo-punk sound Lifetime definitely stood hands down beyond the rest and first in line to carry the jawbreaker torch. Their later material wasn't as solid as As "Hello Bastards", but all hyperbole aside, i think they've more than earned all the "essential punk band" type-ery they've garnered I almost drove off the road listening to Lifetime, the "groundbreaking melodic hardcore band!!" True story. i don't like lifetime. i know there's more of you who are thinking the same. "why do you think lifetime is god's gift to rock music then? I love this band because they write great songs. I prefer Hello Bastards. I want them to come to Chicago. "Anchor" is my favorite song. I can't wait for the Jade Tree retrospective. That is all. I always hear about how influential this band is.... rkl, i think the reason lifetime gets so much praise is because of dan yemin and the bands that he went on to form: kid dynamite, paint it black Lifetime - live in Los Angeles i always considered lifetime on their own. I never thought they were part of a larger genre, or had many real imitators. "rkl, this band is okay and everyone here goes apeshit over them because they're told to. I mean, seriously, look at the 1990's emo/hardcore scene... These guys were awesome back then, but so were tons of other bands. I don't know what this "LIFETIME CREATED PUNK!" shit is about. "i've never heard somewhere in the swamps...what am i missing, and where record is it on?" I always hear about how influential this band is.... Jersey's Best Dancers is so much better than Hello Bastards. In fact, the only HB-era songs that I ever really listen to are It's Not Funny Anymore and The Things She Said (not even sure if that's the right title). " I don't know what this "LIFETIME CREATED PUNK!" shit is about." and jawbreaker is the undisputed greatest punk band of all time i like lifetime because everyone else does Will brings up an interesting point. 90's Emo/hardcore was not at all like todays scene. It's interesting because listening to JBD now, it doesn't sounds as amazing as it did when I first heard it. And I know a large part of that is because so many bands have been influenced by Lifetime and have mixed their sound into their music. rkl, this band is okay and everyone here goes apeshit over them because they're told to. I mean, seriously, look at the 1990's emo/hardcore scene... These guys were awesome back then, but so were tons of other bands. I don't know what this "LIFETIME CREATED PUNK!" shit is about. kirby...a less rash idea... get a plane ticket and a sxsw ticket...badabing!! im really starting to think im the only person on this site who doesnt go balls to the wall over lifetime. the san francisco show was fucking ridiculous Barry, I'm stoked you finally got to see them!!! Remember listening to Jersey's Best Dancers while we huffed across Ohio??? I can only comment on the San Francisco show but I can say that it killed! i've never heard somewhere in the swamps...what am i missing, and where record is it on? i cant believe i missed this. i had my plane booked from richmond to LA, and i bkaced out at 1 Am friday morning, because i had no place to stay and didnt feel like taking a taxi around all weekend. looks like i'll have to put up with t hem at bamboozle unless they announce a full tour. which is possible. "Oh yeah? Well I slept with your wife!" To conclude, I'm tossin' on the plaid bulldog light and prayin' for a savior when it comes to a Bosstones reunion. Damn, I need to see Lifetime... I got into them about a year ago, and they've become one of my favorite bands of all time. They should get something in the Pittsburgh/Cleveland area. "This really wasn't much of a review." "tragic" breakup? Uh, CANCER is tragic. WAR is tragic. Lifetime's breakup was not tragic. This really wasn't much of a review. i've got a plane ticket and a sxsw badge. Fun times were had that night Awesome, awesome time at the Troubador. Beautiful. Heart felt. Energetic. Plenty of sing-alongs, stage diving (at the beginning and at the end- -the Troubador has a policy against it), crowd surfing, and overall audience participation. I never thought I'd get to see this band live. And, yes, it was like entering a time warp. The number of audience members from the East Coast gave this show a different kind of "feel." LA area shows are infamous for their "stand around and watch" kinds of crowds, but that was not the case here. It needs to be said: Lifetime > Kid Dynamite "I heard these shows were pretty sub-par" I would kill someone infront of their own mother to see Lifetime at least one more time. I heard these shows were pretty sub-par i went to all three west coast ones and it was a great weekend. not quite as fun as the ones on the east coast because it lacked that "holy shit i'm about to see my favorite band! i can't fucking believe it!" feeling, and the west coast doesn't quite have that obsessesion with LT. but because it was less crazy i was able to get more sing-alongs and not get quite as clobbered plus they played fucking SWAMPS! aka the Best Song Ever. Holy fuck, they played all of JBD and played "somewhere in the swamps of jersey". they played all of jerseys best dancers, yes!! two gold stars as in the 5 gold (yellow) star rating used to judge this show? or are you using a different set of standards with those two gold stars as you are with these five stars? |
