Anyone that has followed the career of Andrew W.K. knows that he can be a very odd, but clever individual. On top of this, he’s all about having fun, which you’ve got to love him for. This of course, is on top of his immense musical talent.

Overall, his new DVD, Who Knows? Live in Concert 2000-2004 is entertaining, and aside from the music, it gives a look into the mind of the man behind the music…just not enough to give away his secrets.

An interesting letter to Andrew fills the first two pages of the booklet that comes with the DVD; it’s signed ‘Dad.’ In it, Dad speaks about guiding Andrew and worrying about him slipping in his career with certain aspects they apparently discussed together. Along with this odd letter, there are a number of odd scenes and narration between live footage, that just make you wonder what the hell is going on with this guy. At the very least, it turns the DVD into an experience, rather than your average live video recording. However, the interruptions often seen awkward, and that they may discourage watching this repetitiously.

It also features a number of scenes that go into slow motion, making swooshing sounds as Andrew’s arms flail all over the place. In a few of the songs, he has a little kid (maybe 10-12) on stage dancing, singing, and swinging his arms around just like Andrew. For lack of a better term, it’s darn cute.

Then there is the live footage itself, which -- whether you’re a fan of this guy or not -- is pure energy. Using a technique called “synch-stacking,” various audio and video recording are spliced together to create a near flawless and continuous flow, combining a number of live shows into one. Some of the audio and video is a bit older, so it’s not the prettiest thing you’ll ever see or hear, but it’s still live Andrew W.K. (which brings back memories of one of the best mosh pits I’ve ever been in). The scenes of him rocking out in the wheelchair are unforgettable.

The booklet provides a decent amount of information on Andrew himself, but constantly reminds us, as does the following narration by Andrew 20 minutes into the DVD:

It is my absolute honor/privilege/responsibility and my job, to make as many people feel good as possible. We don’t have fans; we have friends. These are the greatest days of my life, and all they are revolving around is the intensity of so many friends. Life’s too short. Everyone’s invited to this party; it doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like, what you taste like, what you act like, what you like, what you don’t like -- if you like you -- if you like things in general -- if you’re happy to be here, come inside.
Andrew W.K. and his music are things that simply make you feel good, and this DVD is a testament to that. Despite a few of its oddities (which aren’t necessarily flaws, but just some things I haven’t figured out), it is definitely something worth checking out for any fan.

There are a few bonus features, including backstage-type scenes that were cut, and a few other extra scenes, but they aren’t things you’ll find yourself going back to more than once.

i drove from ohio to nyc to see this at that theatre, and it was so worth it both nights.

I saw a screening of this in New York... it's absolutely fun and hilarious. His parents sat in front of us and we're really nice and totally cool and didn't mind that we were wasted.
Andrew came in after and played what i believe was a Bach composition on the organ.
Met him after and he was and signed anything anyone asked and had no problem posing for pictures and what not.
    Really good guy.

    "Ted Leo > Andrew WK"

Dude, it's like comparing two different worlds. Everyone knows that both Ted Leo and AWK are "the man" and Iggy Pop and Tom Waits are "the mother-fucking man."

    To clarify my earlier comments..

Buy the skate and surf 2004 dvd. It's worth it for the "interview outtakes" with andrew wk talking about piebald alone...PIEBALD.....BALLPEN...

Anchors.... wait.... am I your friend?

    Because that's my fucking voicemail!!!

    Hilarious.

I don't think anyone would mind if we dropped Strike Anywhere from the Asskicking Stage to make room for Andrew WK.

    Ted Leo > Andrew WK

Posted by Anchors on 2006-02-18 17:07:59

My friend went to see Andrew WK, and met him afterwords, and AWK recorded my friends voicemail. So every time you call the kid you hear HEY, THIS IS ANDREW WK TAKING A BREAK FROM PARTYING HARD TO TELL YOU MIKE CAN'T COME TO HIS PHONE or something like that.

    Dude is top notch.

AWK is everything that is right and good in the world.

He needs to get the new album out already, though.

its a bummer to always see people rag on so many mediocre and decent bands and are alway shitting on everything in the comment sections, but its refreshing to see people coming together to show support for the truly exceptional.

I would say his musical talent IS immense. The part where he plays I get wet in a cramped apartment on a piano and plays the vocal lines on piano with the music is amazing. He's a super nice guy too. The video is synch-stacked which means they took board feeds from 3 live shows and mixed them all together, it makes for a HUGE live sounds and it wasn't too choppy like all the Tribal Bad Religion videos come out. The artsy stuff is weird but the live footage makes the video well worth it. I've watched this video at least 4 times and I still think it's great...

    My Score:

I went to the screening in New York of "Who Knows" and was completely blown away by how inspiring Andrew W.K. is as a musician and a human in general. He is very talented and constantly challenging all norms and fears. I find his music to be very empowering and the DVD to be very entertaining. I highly recommend it!

Cuz he blows. It's cool that he's nice, though.

    My Score:

i still remember the first time i saw him i had no clue what the fuck was going on. i think the first video had just come out and the album wasn't due out for a few weeks. i left completely confused by what i had just witnessed. then about a week later i got the album was like "ah, now i get it..." the time after that when i saw him (think he headlined over the lost prophets and some shitty nu-metal band) it was incredible and has been everytime i've seen him since. the guy seriously doesn't get the respect he deserves.

    My Score:

The score is for his 100% accurate understanding of the name piebald.

    Best band name ever.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 2:57 AM (EST)

Also.... plenty of the things he says are just downright confusing.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 2:54 AM (EST)

His musical talent actually IS immense. There's a rather impressive scene in the film where he's just sitting, playing a piano, and it might be the most rocking moment on the DVD.

As a film, there's a lot of cool footage, but it is goddamn strange. The reviewer didn't mention the numbers of scenes of empty rooms and ambient noise, or Andrew staring into the camera, or the incredibly weird and puzzlingly long (maybe 6 minutes long) scene of him walking out of the studio and then, walking in silence and by himself through the parking lot, through a wooded area, and through some streets and then off into the darkness.

Fear Factory sucks. I have a friend who introduced me to them and one of their albums was ok. They have this one CD where it's all this horseshit about "what if machines take over the world, blah blah blah". They once did a rap song with Cypress Hill that had lyrics "back the fuck up" and the singer is 100% nu-metal. I saw them with my friend and they had their stage dudes tune all their shit and took 40 minutes to come out and play. Fuck Fear Factory. What kind of name is Fear Factory anyways? Where they thinking that name would be cool?

I wouldnt exactly say his musical talent is immense...

Hes a giant harmless goofball, so whatever. More power to him.
