I admit that I've always liked Atreyu. The Curse was one of my favorites of 2004, and Suicide Notes was easily one of the better purchases I made in 2005. I don't know if it was Brandon Saller's strong signing, the refreshing, dueling guitars of Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel, or if it was just the entire package; simply, they've always felt like the complete package for a metalcore band, and I've always been interested in whatever they did (besides the Bon Jovi cover on the "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" soundtrack).

â??Ex's and Oh's" is the first single off of Death-Grip, and it showcases the main difference in Atreyu. While at times they still stick with their tried and true metalcore formula ("Creature"), a lot of the songs are cleaner ("Our Sick Story") with a lot of the songs being driven by Saller (who also played a bigger role in writing the songs). Also, when Alex Varkatzas isn't shouting, he throws in some surprisingly good clean vocals, with Marc McKnight helping out with some extra backing vocals. "Ex's and Oh's" is highlighted by the melodic guitar solos by Miguel and Jacobs, and the majority of the song is driven by Saller's singing, which has taken a huge rise above his mediocre and overproduced vocals on The Curse.

The rest of Death-Grip follows the pattern. At times it's the older, straight-up metalcore Atreyu you either love or hate. At times it's the evolved Atreyu, in which the maturation has lead to catchy and chaotic rock songs with melody, strong hooks, and loads of melodic and technical solos. It feels like a throwback to the `80s with a mix of the melody of the Cure, and the shredding and soloing of Iron Maiden. The combination between the two styles leads to a unique experience, as the band shows that they can be more than just a metalcore band, which they pull off better than what Avenged Sevenfold try to do.

"You can't affect how other people feel, so don't let them affect how you feel" was a message Alex Varkatzas received from a fortune cookie, and luckily the band decided to follow the message. Sure, Atreyu could have easily made the same old songs and still would have been extremely popular, but their search for what satisfies them allows for them to reach out and achieve what they truly want to do, which makes Death-Grip even more satisfying.

Few bands have been able to evolve and achieve what Atreyu have done. On their debut album they crafted the metalcore album that bands have been trying to do for years. With their third release, Atreyu has fine-tuned their craft even more and have created one of the best albums of 2006.

atreyu's best. although that may not seem like much of a glowing review, it's the best way to sum it up.

no filler, no bullshit, and some excellent guitar playing. sounds like a good listen to me

Mezzy (January 22, 2008)

Would have been better if it was a little longer
Throughly enjoyed it. Good riffs, some nice clean vocals from Alex came as a suprise.

I'm still kinda in disbelief as to how this album received a 9.

PanasonicYouth519 (April 3, 2007)

A few more songs would have been nice, but I thought Suicide Notes and The Curse were better

i really liked this album.
the music was harderrr.
"Our Sick Story" was a good song.

silent_slayer (December 26, 2006)

Great material from Atreyu. This may set an example on how consistent a band can be when developing a music style. The album is as good as they come. Kudos to crazytoledo for his review on this....

C_Z (December 6, 2006)

I've been an Atreyu fan since Suicide Notes..
but honestly this doesn't cut it for me.
The songs aren't as hardcore as they used to be, and for me, they've changed fr the wose. i liked the old atreyu the one who weren't afraid to use sick guitar riffss, etc, and now they have tried to be a bit more mainstream.. and I dont like it..

though i have said that, a bunch of the songs on the cd I accept of.. ..

cheers

viper77 (November 12, 2006)

"creatures" is a pretty strong song...I'd like these guys alot more is the lead singer wasnt completely full of himself. Complete idiot.

However, im not gonna be the typical person to say i dont like them because they dont scream as much as they used to. Thats redictulous, good songwriting is good songwriting

Atreyu never fails to impress me. I was introduced to them by a dear friend around the time "The Curse" -just- came out. I had never been a music buff, listening to mostly Disturbed, The Beach Boys, and country music (I was a loser, yes) But when that CD was laid before me in a CD player it was as if I'd found the Holy Grail of Rock ^_^

I could care less what all you 'put-downers' say, stupid emos...Atreyu will forever rock! They've already shown us that they can (slightly) change their style without fucking everything up (like A7X...idiots)

I'd have to say that my personal fav on the new D.G.O.Y. would have to be, "The Untitled Finale" or "Her Portrait in Black"

Atreyu forever!

dpotts (August 1, 2006)

This is one of those records that Atreyu should try to cover up kinda like Bad Religion did with Into the Unknown.

I found it funny you go off the site to insult my taste in music when one of your favorite rated cds is the Atreyu CD I gave a 9.

And then you called out my bad taste in music on Punknews and said I probably listen to Green Day (who I hate) when your favorite releases are by bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Hawthorne Heights, and From First to Last.

Now that made my day.

Anonymous (April 7, 2006)

I think it's hilarious how some people say, "These guys are fake hardcore, so they suck."

Then others say, "Hardcore sucks so Atreyu sucks."

Am I the only one that can see that they are BETWEEN Rock/Hardcore. You can even throw the word Metal in there if it makes you happy. These guys can play, they can write music, they stay in time, not all of their music is in 4/4, they aren't the greatest band ever, they are not the worst band ever.

Yes they give off a glam rock image, but since when haven't rock stars done this. Does the band Van Halen or Kiss suck solely because DLR wore tight spandex pants and acted flamboyant on stage or because Kiss wore makeup?

I think half of the arguments in here cannot be justifed because they are simply hipocritical. How can someone who "loves good music" hate Atreyu because they wear eye liner or tight pants? How can someone think Atreyu is the best band ever when you haven't heard every band ever?

My Opinion: From what I have heard, I like the album. Not as over-produced as "The Curse" was and definately a step forward. I think as long as they continue to evolve and bring fresh new material to the table they will be on my play list. No not everyone has to love them, musical taste is completely subjective so there is no point in trying to reason with anyone that their musical taste sucks. The skill of a band is an objective way of deciding how good a band is technically, but since when has that ever been THE deciding factor in a great band?

Anonymous (April 6, 2006)

holy krap atreyu is the best band and i love their new cd.... death grip on yesterday is an awsome album and should be loved across the world..... atreyu rocks.....

Anonymous (April 6, 2006)

Here's the deal if you don't like Atreyu than you don't like real metalcore. The premiere metalcore bands are...Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, and A7X...most other metalcore bands are weak

SilentStorms (April 4, 2006)

Is it just me? Or do the people who really really like Atreyu bash everyone who doesn't like them? Meh, that's Atreyu fans for you. Booo yeah!

This premiered at #8 with 70-75k sold.

Sweet.

Anonymous (April 4, 2006)

These arguments are really pointless. I'm only contributing because I believe that this album, like many others, only gets better the more you listen to it. I was never big into Atreyu but I saw them live and decided to pick this one up along with Suicide Notes...Not exactly my top 10 but there's no need to hate. We all have to get that paper

Okay first off...anyone who refers to an album as "horrid" probably shouldn't even be listening to any thing related to Atreyu in the first place. Go listen to the Brittish version of American Idol or something. Also, this album isn't going to cause a new legion of people like that. Its already happened. but whatever.

Just cuz you like Atreyu doesn't mean that anyone who doesn't like it is a douchebag. Hey GreenVandal, aren't you old? I mean, do you really have to get so upset about a 17 year old's Atreyu review? It's not as if it means the album is ACTUALLY good, and that it will trick anyone into buying the album. Even if it did, the type of person that would happen to really deserves to lose the $9.99, that'll teach them a lesson they'll NEVER forget.

Oh, and to people complaining about the Atreyu bashing; Have you ever thought that maybe the reason so many people are making fun of them is not because they are trendy snobish scenesters, but because the album/band is not very good..or really, really, really bad for that matter? Well, you should.

And to the guy trying to get Will to book a show for him; Calling him "young William" all the time is creepy as hell and that's probably why he won't book your band. I mean I know I wouldn't invite anyone I thought was a dangerous sexual predator into my town.

dreux (March 29, 2006)

This band is absolutely fucking terrible, and some 17-year-old's poorly-written, hype-smattered review isn't going to change that.

Years from now, these guys will be lying to their kids about what they did with the best years of their lives so they don't risk said kids finding an old Atreyu CD. 'Cause, hell, if I was in Atreyu and my kid heard the music I spent serious time and money making, I wouldn't blame him for never respecting me again.

"I feel it welling up inside and Robert Smith lied
Boys do cry and with blood tears in my eyes
I'm an Anne Rice novel come to life
I can't hide the monster anymore"

The above could only POSSIBLY be considered good if it were about masturbation.

Anonymous (March 29, 2006)

It's a good CD. It won't change anybody's life but it's not supposed to. Not everything has to be Interpol, or Pelican or Minus the Bear, or whatever it is you have to listen to to have "cred" these days.

It's just one big chocolate sundae of a record. Very enjoyable.

You hipsters can go choke on your PBRs.

A majority of my 'hating' reviews are reviewed by someone else first...

My Bleeding THroh and In Flames review that each got 2/10 were done by Aubin and my Hawthorne Heights and From First to Lasts 1/10 were handled by Brian.

sickboi (March 29, 2006)

A fucking 9.

Cram it in your cramhole.

I haven't listened to much of this band, but I've heard enough to understand why some of their fans are rabid, but this isn't "nearly perfect". Its tolerable at best, with hints of excellent musicianship.

tylerdurden8136 (March 29, 2006)

well, we both can submit a review and depending on how different/similar they are, the .org could post both, one, or neither. worth a shot.

crazytoledo (March 29, 2006)

I already wrote a review, but it comes out the 18th I think.

tylerdurden8136 (March 29, 2006)

fine. i'll write my own review for it. when's the re issue coming out?

crazytoledo (March 29, 2006)

Well I listened to Aidens pre-Victory release and it has the un-f'd up version of 'Knife Blood Nightmare,' but there are still loads of problems.

'I Set My Friends on Fire?' Please...

And while it is better than 'Nightmare Anatomy,' my tastes have changed slightly since reviewing NA, and that'd def. get a 1/10 by me now instead of a 2/10.

tylerdurden8136 (March 29, 2006)

the greatest thing about all the spam and hate comments are the "girl pants wearing" slander. apparently the "hardcore" atreyu fans don't realize that the majority of their fans wear girl pants.

and i'm allowed to say that because two years ago i was listening to atreyu while wearing said piece of clothing. oh the shame.

and crazytoledo, while you're allowed your opinion, don't you think that a 9 is just a bit much for this album? i mean, shit, it would be the same thing if i were to review the next My Chem album and give it a 9 1/2 or 10.

also, i read a comment of yours and how you're going to review Our Gang's Dark Oath and give it a "one." now, i realize that Aiden's new album deserved around that score, but their previous, non-Victory release was at least somewhat decent and deserves a better score (around a 4 1/2 or 5 out of 10).

so please review with some objectivity and not just to cater to the casual readers that come to this site.

although i must admit, it took some balls to post this review.

Anonymous (March 29, 2006)

let me be the first to say that everything you spit in this review is absolutely bullshit.

crazytoledo (March 29, 2006)

Score is for the review. How about you actually review more than two songs off the album. One of which is the single we have all already heard. No one cares how much you like Atreyu. Stick to reviewing the material not giving your opinion on the band as a whole.

I have heard the entire release and I do review the entire release, you dont have to name drop every song to cover it. Covering influences or the style is the equivalent of going over songs.

And boy is that spam sad as hell.

Again keep in mind this is not something I would do. Just not something I will condemn:

Imagine if you will, you're approached by a kid who has tattoos of your band's lyrics on his body. He admires your music in every way, and he happens to be in a band that is really shitty. He is however, very rich, and without your band his probably would not even exist. He says to you he'll give you all the resources you like and all the freedom you like to make a record. What do you say to that? Fuck off kid, no I don't think I deserve to finally make money off of my band that's finally gotten its dues almost a decade later? Or maybe yeah sure I'll take your money, and make a bitchin' new record. Again, this is just hypothetical so whatever. Starving sucks, by the way. By the way, as far as I know most of the guys in Lifetime are over 30, married, and some of 'em have kids. So take that into account as well.

"Well it's hard to set up a show for a band whose name I don't know. I guess you're just proving how uninvolved and out of touch you are that you think the idea of people setting up shows in their hometown is so outrageous."

My band's name is Scream Poet, Scream!. We play in the style of Chicago Jawbreaker influenced pop-punk meets the DC post-hardcore sound, pretty much. Our website is www.screampoetscream.com. We need a show in the first week of July. If a band needs a show in return, I currently run/help book three all ages spaces in Chicago. And.... GO.

C'mon people...let's stop the fighting. Just because one person likes something you don't, doesn't make it bad. Now, Atreyu makes this music because that's their favorite kind of music to listen to. From their (metal-based?) musical background, it's alright to steal from children. They're okay with that. They think it's cool. If you don't like it, then just...don't listen to it. You can't get rid of crap-core, but you can ignore it. "Your only choice is to spit or swallow", but you still have to suck the cock. I, for one, choose to spit it in their eyes.

"I asked Dan Yemin yesterday and he explained that "integrity is just retarded." Shouldn't you be glad for the signing, though? I know you were all super hyped about Against Me goin' Sire, and they were previously an actual underground band."

First, I was never "super hyped" about Against Me! going to Sire. I saw WHY they did it, and funny enough in the post-signing interview I read with Warren he gave the exact same reasoning I proposed about that signing. Against Me! was structinized with every single step they have taken as a band, got fed up with it, and took the money because they realized there was nothing they could do to please the underground punk-rule book crowd like you.

This has not been the case for Lifetime. They broke up before they could do anything too be scrutinized about, yes, but the fact remains that the majority of their fanbase is NOT the Fall Out Boy crowd. However...

My initial comments about Lifetime were made in haste. Much like the Against Me! situation I can see why Lifetime has signed to FBR. I wouldn't do it, but I understand the motivation. It isn't something I would do, true, but I can see how it happened.

With that being said, this band is awful.

colin (March 28, 2006)

I see your point Colin, but we don't all sit down and discuss the ratings of individual reviews together. My ratings are relative to myself, and that's about the only way to manage it because otherwise, every review would turn into a big ordinal debate (is X better than Y, if so....)

We'd end up with weird fractions, that's for sure.

i agree... but i still think a hint of objectivity should come into reviews. scores of 8, 9, and 10 should be for bands that are reinventing something - whether it's their own sound, or a sound in general, or a way of approaching music... or, if it's just sort of the 'epitome' of what a band is about.

maybe for an atreyu record this is a 9, but then you have to put atreyu sort of in the bin of metalcore bands that aren't really pushing much of a sound. i've heard this record a few times, and i do think it's better than previous efforts, but it lacks in the way a band like PMFS reinvent their sound but still keep it real every album.

even if you're just comparing it to albums within the genre, "hidden hands of a sadist nation" only got 3 1/2 stars (by you, aubin, for shame!)... whereas it carries a much more aggressive and equally creative sound, except three years earlier.

i've regretted scoring albums before, but this seems like a much more absolute punk review of nonstop hype than it is any sort of objective look at a record.

ps, rubyx you suck too

etwiels88 (March 28, 2006)

Dude...crazytoledo, you seriously have awful taste in music

booooo!

opened_ground (March 28, 2006)

the editors of this site should exercise some editorial power.

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

Is your dick covered in mascara and black eye liner cuz someone in Atreyu must have given you a Blow job for that score.

ONE!

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

I'd be angrier about FFTL getting a 6, but that's just me.

darkstarm (March 28, 2006)

I don't base my opinions on this website. I've heard this record. It sucks. Maybe I'm just pissed that Lifetime signed to Fueled By Ramen, or maybe it's that the 'org just gave an Atreyu a 9. Or maybe it's both.

In regards to Lifetime: what happened to integrity?

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

*wouldn't flame you*

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

Well at least I dont base my opinions around what the people think on a site. It'd be easy to write a bad review just so people would flame you, but that wouldn't be honest. People have their right to an opinion, so ya.

pwfanatic (March 28, 2006)

and people game me shit for giving the curse an 8.

(i deserved it).

Inspection12e (March 28, 2006)

Crazy Toledo is a braver man than I.

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

If only they would have used my From First to Last or Hawthorne Heights reviews. Each were 1's by the way.

darkstarm (March 28, 2006)

Why was this published on this website? I'm serious. There is no fucking way that this record is a 9, even if the reveiwer LIKES it. I say... bullshit.

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

wheres the devil dogs review from 30 sizzling slabs
PS: Atreyu sucks

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

this is probably the worst band, and I agree this record together with hawthorne heights are the best examples whats wrong with so-called hardcore, it has become lame metal-mtv shit and victory, trustkill and ferret are members of this bullshit club

skolarx (March 28, 2006)

i burned a copy of this off a friend a few weeks ago. i thought it sort of fell into the same trap as the last cky record, its not bad and they haven't radically altered their sound, which leads to the problem with it, no growth. they didn't take any chances, just more of the same

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

This is a serious low for this website

Godfather (March 28, 2006)

rabble rabble rabble rabble

steveman (March 28, 2006)

Dude..The Bon Jovi cover is totally their best work to date.

aubin (March 28, 2006)

albums given four stars or less on this website

I see your point Colin, but we don't all sit down and discuss the ratings of individual reviews together. My ratings are relative to myself, and that's about the only way to manage it because otherwise, every review would turn into a big ordinal debate (is X better than Y, if so....)

We'd end up with weird fractions, that's for sure.

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

Very good album.

BizzleBrizzle (March 28, 2006)

Punknews.org needs new reviewers.

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

I'm never taking another review on this site seriously. This band, this record, this label is everythung that is wrong with "indie" music.

I will only read pitchfork reviews from now on. Fuck this teenage bullshit.

relix (March 28, 2006)

Comparing aspects of an Atreyu record to Iron Maiden disturbs me greatly.

TheNightProwler (March 28, 2006)

Can this site just do the world a favor and ignore Victory Record's existence?

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

Victory is on a slight little role, with this release, Dead to Fall and Sinai Beach reissue next week, but then AIden's reissuing 'Our Gangs Dark Oath' on the 18th.

Anonymous (March 28, 2006)

LOL, this is funny shit!!!

Dante3000 (March 28, 2006)

Soo....I'm stumped.
I thought The Curse licked balls and I'm sure I'll feel the same way about this.
But hey, to each their own. I like way shittier music probably.

lame

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

This is easily Atreyu's best work.

Im buying this today (even though I already have a copy on my computer) and Robot Chicken.

the_other_scott (March 28, 2006)

Atreyu - A Death-Grip on Yesterday
Posted by colin on 2006-03-28 12:21:53

albums given four stars or less on this website:

green day - nimrod.
nofx - the decline
planes mistaken for stars - fuck with fire
bad religion - the gray race

just in case the reviewer wanted to adjust that score.

Ironically, the reviews on Punknews for Atreyu havent been to bad:

http://punknews.org/reviews.php?op=reviews&banddirect=Atr eyu

'Suicide Notes' got a 9 and 7, 'The Curse' got a 8 and 4.

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

It's supposed to say 'Saller's strong singing.'

It's typed that way on my computer, maybe I re-proofread it after submitting it.

Godfather (March 28, 2006)

this band is on victory records....nothing more really needs to be said

rubyx (March 28, 2006)

I'm planning on buying this later today. I don't care what anyone would say, this band rocks and is the BEST BAND EVER!

crazytoledo (March 28, 2006)

I am going to be hated for this one.

kirbypuckett (March 28, 2006)

Yuck.
