Long Beach, CA's 46 Short hammered me with this, their 3rd full-length. Unfortunately, I never got to hear the band's previous releases on Know Records (1999) or GoKart Records (2004), but I will definitely try and pick them up whenever I get the chance, as this release is just some of the best `80s hardcore-influenced music I ever heard. When I listen to old Black Flag, MDC or Circle Jerks records these days, it kinda bothers me that their sound quality is outdated. Well, these 13 songs (actually, it's 14 with the hidden track, which I'm sure is a cover, but I can't place it) pick up just where these bands left off, and add a sound that is thick and biting without sounding old.

I have to set something straight here: that hidden track is NO coversong, but a genuine 46 Short song that is titled "Strangers". for some reason, their little quarter-page ad in razorcake stuck in my memory but with a name like 46 short, i wasn't exactly champin' at the bit to check them out. this review's one me over. I always thought this band was good but kind of middle-of-the-road for what they did on their Go-Kart releases, nothing especially stood out as being good or bad. Still, if this has rawer production I could see them really kicking it up a notch. Score is for their older stuff, this is going on my list of stuff to check out for sure. i forgot the rating for the album. this band fucking kicks ass. right up there with western addiction and paint it black. ok!!!! i agree with kliph, im also a fan of low production.. i love it when filthy is used as a positive adjective TKO, to me, always seems to consistently put out good records. Awesome band. It's cool that they're starting to get some recognition, 'cus I've thought they were way underrated for a while. the mp3s sound pretty hot great fucking album. i agree so much with this.. this cd is so sick I think the PIB comparison is pretty accurate, but maybe a little more street punk sounding and melodic. wait, you don't like hatecore? wtf? awesome! I bought their first album like a million years ago and it was great. I hope this is short. I'm gonna check it out! |
