I pretty unapologetically despised Less Than Jake's last proper "effort" Anthem. It says a lot when the B-sides from the album form a more cohesive, honest and enjoyable album from a band, in my opinion. To say that I had written the band off at that point, after at least 7 years as a fan, would be a slight overstatement. Slight.

This doesn't really sound like old Less Than Jake. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a bad release - just more radio-friendly. (I'd rather decent stuff like this became popular rather than the generic dirge of bands like Simple Plan!). Overrated and The Rest Of My Life are both extremely catchy, Negative Side of Optimistic Eyes is slightly more experimental and We, The Uninspired will bring the rock for the older fans. Perhaps a little short, but still a great release. Overated Sucks, I must admit. Im a really new fan to Less Than Jake. My first LTJ album was actually Anthem (shame on me...) I was playing Tony Hawk, and "Thats why they call it a union" came on... and you know the rest. Hell, for a couple weeks, i thought Anthem was thier debut album (MORE shame on me) but dont worry, I found they had older and WAY better stuff. So a couple weeks ago, i went out and bought this EP and I'm not really sure what to think. so heres my song by song ratings. I don't like the slow song, I actually dig the shit out Overated, despite the cliche poppy sound and stupid lyrics. Damn catchy though. 'We the uninspired' gave me that great feeling when i first heard LTJ, right in the pit of your belly you know? And you put on the song again, this time mouthing the words and saying the few in the chorus you picked up the first time, and you do it again and again until you finally know the whole thing. Yeah. And the other one, whatever the name of it is, decent, catchy but not really something to write home about. Borders and Anthem grew on me, I assume this album (the full length) will also. By the way, I didn't think B-sides was the bees-knees, some great tracks (frenzal, sobriety, a.s.o.k, goodbeye in gas were great) suprised so many here loved it. Does the presence of horns = great for most people. And the absense = shitty? Overrated - Not all that good, I guess I can stand it though. It sounds like New Found Glory, and says sex, getting wasted, and designer drugs are overrated. So, yeah, I kinda want to kill my self when I listen to it. As i opened the less than jake website to find the In with the out crowd album cover and the guitar intro of Overrated beginning on the my space player, I began to except that this was gona be another Anthem. I mean that picture looks like a mix between a star trek episode and a michael jackson video, all they needed was everyone to hold hands. And the overrated song sounds like New Found Glory, dont NFG even have a song called Overrated. ANyways first impression was bad. Think A Still life franchise is a good song but doubt that any of the other songs on the album will be better than that. I mean u can analyze as much as u want but the old LTJ is neva coming back. I hate to say this coz il be seeing them live in 2 days time and im dead excited, if I change my mind after the show will be back to post again. Overrated sucks, if it's irony, i hope that their video(?) shows everyone that the whole thing is a joke! time to go away guys. you've embarassed yourselves enough. i've been an LTJ fan for 9 years and I don't really like the direction they've been going either. I don't think "Overrated" is as awful as "Break Soon" but i wanted to point out one thing. You said there were too many pointless whoa-ohs. Isn't that that what LTJ is all about? MORE LIKE : More-Fueled By Ramen Infuence /Less-Less Than Jake. AMIRITE?! i think this is the uninspired sellout album. i know that term is used too much and i love ltj, but vinnie is trying to make some dough. these songs on the full length are regression. thanks hein. i always liked your opinion. The Hein/LTJ impression: didnt they say this shits suppose to sound like the descendents? what the fuck happened The songs i've heard from the actual album are beyond disappointing. I refuse to believe that a band writes something like B is for B-Sides and then writes the crap that i've heard from the new record. i swear to god there better be another goddamned B-side album that follows the new album. i've heard 3 of the songs from this EP, and the 4th is the one he praises the most in the review, so i'm looking forward to hearing it. Ironically, less than jake's music (The science of selling yourself short) can be heard in the background on an episode of MTV's Cribs... I'm embarrassed to know that... damn useless memory retention. Not sure what this has to do with LTJ, but if you listen to exactly 26 seconds into track 5 on this record you might be getting an erection...at least i did... Time to kill the hooooooorrrssseeeee *lmao* With each subsequent release I begin to suspect more and more that Jessica, Darren, Pete, Shaun the roadie and Skullman were the only ones running quality control for this band. shut up fag, you know they make lots of money off some pop bullshit Writing from their wallets? "Thanks for your feedback on the review, I'll try to expand my descriptions next time." i havent listened to this band forever i will have to give this a download when i get outta work The Adam/LTJ impression: Pretty Fly For A White Guy is still one of the worst songs I have ever heard. I can't possibly understand how anyone with taste could like that song. dude, the offspring, no contest. 'conspiracy of one' and 'splinter' were both hideously bad, and as bad as 'shes gonna break soon' or 'overrated' are, they dont' come close to the awfulness of 'original prankster' or 'hit that'. not even close. the only thing the offspring have down interesting in the past 8 years is that song 'cant repeat' until you realize its 'the kids aren't alright' with new lyrics. score is for the LTJ/Pung split 7". "Whose fallen further? Offspring or Less Than Jake." Whose fallen further? Offspring or Less Than Jake. I'm not a huge fan of Anthem, and I've gotten over loving Losing Streak, but Escape from the Bomb House stands as easily my favorite LTJ song of all time. Maybe because it's more like NOFX (my favorite band) than LTJ but whatever the reason, it's mindblowingly good. some of us really love music. i love coming here and seeing the same names i saw 4 years ago. when i think of how i'm feeling right now, somehow, i still remember how I felt 4 years ago. its the same old song from years ago ya know? Anthem to me was more of a "songs album" it had some really good tracks, in my opinion, but the album just didn't flow the way most of the others have, personally I felt the same way about "Borders and Boundaries". I like B-Sides a lot, and it's really more like Less Than Jake's Amnesiac, than a b-sides album. I have always loved Less Then Jake. I am really hoping I feel differently about this release then you do. No offence. "Overated (Everything Is)" written by Less Than Jake/Holly Knight. Was the only one I liked Anthem a lot? I have always loved Less Then Jake. I am really hoping I feel differently about this release then you do. No offence. I dont understand why they're even still on a major. They'd get more attention if they went straight to Fueled by Ramen! You know, it's like the band is trying to get a second wind, when they already had a strong momentum that they were building their entire career. I really enjoy growing with a band throughout their career, but it seems like at some point, Less Than Jake decided to put that idea aside and jump back down to impressing the new batch of sixteen year olds, but the thing is -- Less Than Jake's mainstream appeal is outdated, so what we have here instead sounds forced and it may not be terrible, but it won't hit any marks. Like Anthem, the new kids won't go crazy over it, and neither will the old fans. It's just... there. I can buy what you said about Vinnie and Overrated, but he clearly did not consider his fanbase when writing the song. Half of LTJs fans were not even BORN when they first formed, much less listening to punk rock. And hey, maybe it is parody. But when it becomes the single, when it is played on radio in between pop punk songs that sound like that unironically, it's pretty hard to call it satire at all. If Propagandhi did that, you would be able to tell it was satire. If LTJ does it, given their history of writing radio friendly pop punk tunes, it's easy to mistaken it for a genuinely, um, shitty song. Part of satire is making it work as satire. When you've become part of the problem that you're satirizing it's hard to tell where the line begins and ends. It's alright, I guess. It's not even as good as Anthem though. any hot guys aged between 19-25 around the guelph region looking for some pussy tonight? drop me a note. adam: i doubt even LTJ likes their new stuff.. (they joke about it...but i can see them getting dropped and moving to side one dummy) Ah, I reread your post. HR is your favorite. batattack: it is certainly sad that the highlight of this is the the non-album tracks... i'm praying this full length doesn't blow. If Anthem is your 2nd favorite LTJ album then you deserve to get you ass kicked. I bet you are happy about the "From First to Last" news as well! Anthem is actually my second-favorite LTJ record, behind Hello Rockview (however, I've never heard the B-sides record or Losers, Kings...). "However, in the middle it kind of sounds like early Blink-182 covering LTJ, if that makes any sense at all." B is for B-Sides over Anthem? More like B is for Boring. I dont think Rest of My Life will be a single. I would have to say that Less Than Jake IS the reason that I listen to any sort of punk rock today. Like a lot of people on this board who were in their teens when ska blew up in the mainstream, it was the gateway to get me into punk. I've seen the band 11 times or so over the last 8 years and still count my opporunity to sing with them at "LTJ Karaoke" a couple years ago as one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. I still think Hello Rockview is one of the best pop-punk records of all time and that the band has never matched the production from that album (hence my excitement that Howard Benson who produced HR was producing IWTOC). On a bad day, LTJ is better than most other bands making music today. synthesized strings sound like SHIT. Less Than Jake is almost the exclusive reason I'm even listening to music now. I have everything they've put out to this point and I will always love them, but I can't stand the new stuff. Maybe it's because my music tastes are more mature. its not cool to rip less than jake. its a necessity for your ska-ish soul if you gave a rats ass about pezcore/losing streak/hello rockview. theyre making shitty music nowadays, no bones about it. Justin, As someone said, Anthem had a few really good tracks like Science, Short Fuse Burning or Escape from the A-Bomb House, and wasn't half as pop-ish as the latest stuff. The Adam/LTJ impression: I remember when 'Losing Streak' came out and people said it was over-produced. Then 'Hello Rockview' came out and it was WAY over-produced and so on and so forth... Cliche fan. I loved the earlier stuff. But I equate my loss of interest in my growing up musically and an incident at a show that I couldnt get a ticket for. score is obviously for the b sides "However, in the middle it kind of sounds like early Blink-182 covering LTJ, if that makes any sense at all." I am streaming Rest Of MY Life right now, for the first time, and oh fuck it's so crisp and sugary, anyone with diabetes really should stay far, far away. Never got around to hearing Anthem or B-Sides. I LOVE Borders and Boundaries. Ya think I might like Anthem then? B-Sides? ...and by "this album," of course I mean NOT this album. Duuhhrrr. Eh, even as mediocre as they've become, I'll still buy everything they put out, because even at their worst, LTJ is still a lot of fun to listen to. And maybe we can hope for an awesome B-Sides collection from this album, too. ::Fingers crossed:: Okay I thought I was the only person who didn't like Anthem. Kids here seemed to love it even though it really sucked. yea, it's pop-punk. no, there's not many horns. but i like it a lot. still looking forward to the full cd. I hate to sound like an old, cliche less than jake fan, but why am i so damn pissed off at this new shit?! i'm really not trying to be naive.. thirty seconds of extra horns will not change any of these songs, but there is only so far off you can treck in search of "musical progression".. Bitch, bitch. I liked Anthem. As a whole, it wasn't as good as their previous full lengths, but it had some stellar tracks. Science, Plastic Cup Politics, Short Fuse Burning were all great. Between B-Sides and Anthem, there was a very solid album. Maybe Warner is pushing them away from their more ska songs, because the non album tracks here sound much better than the ones that are going to be on Out Crowd. at this point in time, it's pretty much like...less than who? Less Than Jake was one of the first bands that got me into punk/ska music and they'll always have a spot in my heart, but "Anthem" was a seriously awful album and the songs I've heard from this effort sound even worse. I still haven't heard "B is for B-Sides," but I wish they would start writing with some balls again. I used to love this band, but now i could care less about them. I have yet to hear this, but it seems like their songs contained less and less ska in them. These songs without ska sound like fall out boy styled pop punk to me, and that bums me out. I've only in a sense heard two of the songs from here. "Overrated" sounds like Bowling for Soup. Man, The Rest Of My Life is going to be such a huge single. I bet the marketing department wants it out for graduation. |
