I pretty unapologetically despised Less Than Jake's last proper "effort" Anthem. It says a lot when the B-sides from the album form a more cohesive, honest and enjoyable album from a band, in my opinion. To say that I had written the band off at that point, after at least 7 years as a fan, would be a slight overstatement. Slight.

Well, here we are, two years later, and the band has released their teaser EP for the upcoming In With the Out Crowd, Absolution for Idiots and Addicts. Of the four songs, two are non-album tracks and one is a special "EP version." "Overrated (Everything Is)" is set to be the first single and is, well, kind of boring. It's not "She's Gonna Break Soon"'s level of mediocre, but it's totally uninspired. It's got so many "whoa-ohs" for no apparent reason. There's just a lot going on in the speakers, but very little of substance.

"Negative Sides of Optimistic Eyes" starts off with some solid bass work by Roger, and some nice horn work. The vocals sound very similar to "The Ghosts of Me and You," the most solid track on Anthem. In fact, the whole song reminds me of that, but a bit rawer. However, in the middle it kind of sounds like early Blink-182 covering LTJ, if that makes any sense at all.

The third track, "We, the Uninspired," sounds like Losing Streak and Hello Rockview. In fact, it sounds equal parts those records so much it's amazing that it doesn't sound forced. It even has slight tinges of the more "rock" sound that they explored on Borders and Boundaries. It's short, fast and enjoyable, and the highlight for sure.

And then, there's "The Rest of My Life." When this track was released for streaming, I said "This song is actually interesting at least. Marks a change that isn't just Pro-Tooling their sound," and I definitely stand by that. However, be sure that this is adult-contemporary Less Than Jake. There are some horns buried in there, some synthesized strings I believe, and that really weird guitar solo sound. It's catchy, but Vinnie and company have yet to write a song that isn't.

I know at this point, I sound like the crotchety old man who "just wants it the way it used to be," and that's partially true. I was right behind LTJ when they changed from Losing Streak to Rockview, and I loved Borders. It was a very organic, natural progression. The Less Than Jake of the past few years has bored and disappointed me, and it appears to continue. This EP cost me 4 dollars on iTunes, and while I'm glad to pay it, I could just as well have never heard it and been fine to spin my older albums and wait for the band to start writing from their hearts again, instead of their wallets. There's a glimmer of hope here for that in "We, the Uninspired" but I fear that the fact that it's a "non-album track" smothers that glimmer with the OC-friendly strummy guitars of "The Rest of My Life." This isn't to say that newer fans won't enjoy all of this, it just doesn't feel like the same band anymore. The songs are sugary and catchy, and just don't have that "special something" that drew myself, and many people of my age to the band 10 years ago.

    My Score:

This doesn't really sound like old Less Than Jake. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a bad release - just more radio-friendly. (I'd rather decent stuff like this became popular rather than the generic dirge of bands like Simple Plan!). Overrated and The Rest Of My Life are both extremely catchy, Negative Side of Optimistic Eyes is slightly more experimental and We, The Uninspired will bring the rock for the older fans. Perhaps a little short, but still a great release.

    My Score:

    Overated Sucks, I must admit.

The Blink 182 influence may come from Mark Hoppus co-writing , The Rest of my life!? maybe.

(it says on the inside cover of the Ep behind the cd)

    Who knows?!

We, The Uninspired the best on the album - definitly should be released as the new single instead of Overated!

Im a really new fan to Less Than Jake. My first LTJ album was actually Anthem (shame on me...) I was playing Tony Hawk, and "Thats why they call it a union" came on... and you know the rest. Hell, for a couple weeks, i thought Anthem was thier debut album (MORE shame on me) but dont worry, I found they had older and WAY better stuff. So a couple weeks ago, i went out and bought this EP and I'm not really sure what to think. so heres my song by song ratings.

Overrated (Everything Is) - it's fast! it's fun! it's total crap! really, im not sure which one is worse. overrated or shes gonna break soon. 2/10

Negative Sides Of Optimistic Eyes - I think its a REALLY good song and even better than SOME songs on pezcore. 8/10

We, The Uninspired - this song scares me. not cause it sucks, but its that they took it off the album. This SHOULD be the sound that LTJ has, and yet they took it OFF the album. 9/10

Rest of My Life - wow, I didn't even know LTJ could pull this type of song off! its... really good. 7/10 (lots of that score is for creativity)

overall, its not a bad album, but they should have put thier other two b-sides on it, and make it an enhanced CD. Now I just gotta wait for my special edition in with the out crowd to ship...

    My Score:

I don't like the slow song, I actually dig the shit out Overated, despite the cliche poppy sound and stupid lyrics. Damn catchy though. 'We the uninspired' gave me that great feeling when i first heard LTJ, right in the pit of your belly you know? And you put on the song again, this time mouthing the words and saying the few in the chorus you picked up the first time, and you do it again and again until you finally know the whole thing. Yeah. And the other one, whatever the name of it is, decent, catchy but not really something to write home about. Borders and Anthem grew on me, I assume this album (the full length) will also. By the way, I didn't think B-sides was the bees-knees, some great tracks (frenzal, sobriety, a.s.o.k, goodbeye in gas were great) suprised so many here loved it. Does the presence of horns = great for most people. And the absense = shitty?

Overrated - Not all that good, I guess I can stand it though. It sounds like New Found Glory, and says sex, getting wasted, and designer drugs are overrated. So, yeah, I kinda want to kill my self when I listen to it.

Negative Sides - When I first hear it, I thought it was decent, but listening to it by itsself, its just alright. i think I only initially liked it cause it was such a step up from overrated.

We The Uninspired - This song is worth the price of the EP alone. Fucking great...only thing is, why isn't it an album track? Do they have a good song banning for their Warner debut?

Rest Of My Life - I never use the term "gay" to describe anything, cause it stands parallel with my beliefs, but... jesus christ.

I guess it's ok overall...it was cheap. I bought this with the new Babyshambles record, and that is infintely better, so this hasn't got much rotation. Maybe it will grow on me...but I doubt it.

As i opened the less than jake website to find the In with the out crowd album cover and the guitar intro of Overrated beginning on the my space player, I began to except that this was gona be another Anthem. I mean that picture looks like a mix between a star trek episode and a michael jackson video, all they needed was everyone to hold hands. And the overrated song sounds like New Found Glory, dont NFG even have a song called Overrated. ANyways first impression was bad. Think A Still life franchise is a good song but doubt that any of the other songs on the album will be better than that. I mean u can analyze as much as u want but the old LTJ is neva coming back. I hate to say this coz il be seeing them live in 2 days time and im dead excited, if I change my mind after the show will be back to post again.

    My Score:

Overrated sucks, if it's irony, i hope that their video(?) shows everyone that the whole thing is a joke!
Rest of my life is... almost okey
    Negative sides is okey
We, the uninspired is really good, i like it a lot! Maybe its because a was so happy to hear a new LTJ song that sounds like their old stuff!

i read somwhere that Vinnie had said that 6 or 7 songs on their new album was real 2-ton ska, so im still looking forward to hearing the new album

Btw Losing streak and Hello rockview= the best albums!

i've been an LTJ fan for 9 years and I don't really like the direction they've been going either. I don't think "Overrated" is as awful as "Break Soon" but i wanted to point out one thing. You said there were too many pointless whoa-ohs. Isn't that that what LTJ is all about?

i think this is the uninspired sellout album. i know that term is used too much and i love ltj, but vinnie is trying to make some dough. these songs on the full length are regression.

    My Score:

    The Hein/LTJ impression:

I agree with most of what this reviewer and Adam wrote: really disappointing stuff here from one of my favorite bands ever. I didn't listen to this EP to be honest, but received a promo for their full-length a few weeks ago now, and I just have to confirm that there's only a couple interesting songs on it. Most of it is boring rock and intricate slower uninspiring songs. And please believe me, I don't think it's cool to pick on this band, in fact it makes me feel bad to write this about LTJ, because they truly have been such an important band for me in the past. I even liked Anthem a lot.

I just wonder; is this really due to them signing to a major again? I doubt it. I'm pretty sure they wanted this thing to sound the way it does. On the other hand, how is it possible that Roger (not so long ago) recorded that splendid Rehasher album that is so energetic, and now helps serving us this rubbish? I just don't get that. One consolation maybe... I listened to the album about a dozen times now, forcing myself to listen more thoroughly than usual and... in the end some of this stuff is listenable. That's far from enough though I'm afraid.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at 5:21 PM (EDT)

The songs i've heard from the actual album are beyond disappointing. I refuse to believe that a band writes something like B is for B-Sides and then writes the crap that i've heard from the new record. i swear to god there better be another goddamned B-side album that follows the new album. i've heard 3 of the songs from this EP, and the 4th is the one he praises the most in the review, so i'm looking forward to hearing it.

    The Adam/LTJ impression:

Now, this was one of my favourite bands growing up, and hell, I managed to shove my "old school fan bias" to give Anthem a really nice review on Punknews. Here's why the their current sound bugs me though...

The band had their major label years, they had the push of being a trendy act at the height of a trendy sound, and they managed to gain a lot of fans in the process. After Capitol the band seemed to be reconnecting with the "scene" in that they signed to Fat, Vinny's Fueled By Ramen was putting out interesting records and the band was touring with other bands of their general age/fanbase from the independent punk scene. By all accounts they should have continued along that line and pulled off the sort of "respected indie reinvention" that the Suicide Machines or Bosstones managed.

Yet instead they're back on a major label and going through the same auto-tuner gauntlet as bands far younger that don't know any better. It's like a mid-life crisis move. They're trying to re-connect with the same age group of kids they connected with in 1996, while those of us who were around in 1996 are left scratching our heads. To us, this band should be on a big indie label like Fat or Epitaph or even FBR and touring with bands like the Bouncing Souls or NOFX. I actually still really love this LTJ's songwriting, but the whole career trajectory they're on seems awkward and unnatural to me.

    -adam

Yes. and I really hope I like this. but i'm like you, i got into them in 97, saw them when they were still touring for 'losing streak', have seen them 13 times live since then and have loved all their releases except 'borders' (which still had its moments).

but this being on a major makes no sense, and the marketing of a song like 'overrated' makes the average ltj fan, whos' probably 23-27 at this point, scratching their heads indeed. i'm 25.

and whoever said 'overrated' sounds like bowling for soup, I said the same thing when I first heard it.

Pretty Fly For A White Guy is still one of the worst songs I have ever heard. I can't possibly understand how anyone with taste could like that song.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at 10:28 AM (EDT)

dude, the offspring, no contest. 'conspiracy of one' and 'splinter' were both hideously bad, and as bad as 'shes gonna break soon' or 'overrated' are, they dont' come close to the awfulness of 'original prankster' or 'hit that'. not even close. the only thing the offspring have down interesting in the past 8 years is that song 'cant repeat' until you realize its 'the kids aren't alright' with new lyrics.

b is for b sides is better than anything the offspring have done in over 7 years, as is anthem.

I'm not a huge fan of Anthem, and I've gotten over loving Losing Streak, but Escape from the Bomb House stands as easily my favorite LTJ song of all time. Maybe because it's more like NOFX (my favorite band) than LTJ but whatever the reason, it's mindblowingly good.

You know, it's like the band is trying to get a second wind, when they already had a strong momentum that they were building their entire career. I really enjoy growing with a band throughout their career, but it seems like at some point, Less Than Jake decided to put that idea aside and jump back down to impressing the new batch of sixteen year olds, but the thing is -- Less Than Jake's mainstream appeal is outdated, so what we have here instead sounds forced and it may not be terrible, but it won't hit any marks. Like Anthem, the new kids won't go crazy over it, and neither will the old fans. It's just... there.

Posted by skaboom on 2006-04-04 18:23:13

I can buy what you said about Vinnie and Overrated, but he clearly did not consider his fanbase when writing the song. Half of LTJs fans were not even BORN when they first formed, much less listening to punk rock. And hey, maybe it is parody. But when it becomes the single, when it is played on radio in between pop punk songs that sound like that unironically, it's pretty hard to call it satire at all. If Propagandhi did that, you would be able to tell it was satire. If LTJ does it, given their history of writing radio friendly pop punk tunes, it's easy to mistaken it for a genuinely, um, shitty song.

But I still like it. FANBOY POWER GO!

Posted by Fuzzy on 2006-04-04 17:28:55

Part of satire is making it work as satire. When you've become part of the problem that you're satirizing it's hard to tell where the line begins and ends.

    Posted by Vincent_M on 2006-04-04 16:54:11

It's alright, I guess. It's not even as good as Anthem though.

Also, people need to stop bitching about Overrated (Everything Is.) According to Vinnie, he wrote the song as a tirade against the shallow subject matter covered in pop-punk songs, and set it to a musical style similar to the people he was mocking. That seemed to go right over people's heads.

I pretty much feel the same way about LTJ, they're doing the same thing as Goldfinger except they LTJ was always a better band and there's still some salvagably good songs on their post-borders and boundaries albums. It's kind of confusing cause while it's easy to write off other bands who still try to play to 15-year-olds I still like LTJ and I'd probably still go see them live if it costed less than $15 (which it hasn't in a while).

I must disagree. I love Less Than Jake. No one hates on Anthem because it was on Warner. News flash: Losing Streak and Hello Rockview, the two most unanimously loved LTJ albums, were on Capitol. Anthem was weak. B is for B-Sides was better. heck, Jay Frenzal and, Showbiz? Science? Who Cares?, ASAOK and Last Rites To Sleepless Nights are all better than almost all of Anthem. It wasn't awful, but it was forgettable, which is not something you expect from LTJ.
And, Scott, you're wrong, too. How do you like Anthem better than Losing Streak, Hello Rockview and/or Borders And Boundaries?

"However, in the middle it kind of sounds like early Blink-182 covering LTJ, if that makes any sense at all."

No, it doesn't make much sense. Elaborate?

It sounds like mid-90's blink playing LTJ songs. It's this weird blend of forced poppiness that would have fit into the Dude Ranch outtakes.

"However, be sure that this is adult-contemporary Less Than Jake."

Not quite sure what you're trying to say here...

It's LTJ playing Adult Contemporary punk rock. Watered down indie rock mixed with bland punk.

"This EP cost me 4 dollars on iTunes, and while I'm glad to pay it, I could just as well have never heard it and been fine to spin my older albums and wait for the band to start writing from their hearts again, instead of their wallets."

So they're just in it for the money hey? I'm sure they're laughing all the way to the bank, raking in the cash and chuckling at the fans that are buying into their music.

    Score's for the review.

I didn't say they were only in it for the money, I'm saying that it's obvious that these guys can still write killer songs. It just strikes me as odd that coupled with a few good tracks, they pad it with OC-friendly, TRL-ready pop schlock. Thanks for your feedback on the review, I'll try to expand my descriptions next time.

Oh, and everything that Adam said below I agree with.

    Posted by batattack8 on 2006-04-04 13:47:08

B is for B-Sides over Anthem? More like B is for Boring.

Overrated- Yeah, it's pretty bland, but it's not better than She's Gonna Break Soon. I'm tired of people whining about that song, it wasn't any drastic change from what they normally do and yet people all hated it and Anthem in general just because it was on a sub of Warner and got some radio play. And pointless whoa's in an LTJ song? Yeah, like that's never happened before.

Negative Sides- I see no real vocal comparison to Ghosts. If anything, there're some similarities in the verse to Bigger Picture. Less Than Jake has always had some pretty repetitive songs, but I've never really been wavered by it until listening to this song.

We, the Uninspired- If you think this is the best song on the EP then I will never understand how your brain functions. I love the Losing Streak and Hello Rockview records too, but this is nowhere near even comparable to that stuff. This song is more like some shitty high school ska band tried to rip off a Losing Streak song and ended up shitting all over it.

Rest of My Life- Too mellow for a Less Than Jake, but it's pretty good.

The writing on this record in terms of the actual music is pretty weak. But this review was even weaker. Totally lame.

I dont think Rest of My Life will be a single.
in fact, I doubt much radio play here in the midwest of LTJ.
I havent ordered the ep yet, but I know that it's going to be rad, despite some moronic fairweather LTJ fan.

I would have to say that Less Than Jake IS the reason that I listen to any sort of punk rock today. Like a lot of people on this board who were in their teens when ska blew up in the mainstream, it was the gateway to get me into punk. I've seen the band 11 times or so over the last 8 years and still count my opporunity to sing with them at "LTJ Karaoke" a couple years ago as one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. I still think Hello Rockview is one of the best pop-punk records of all time and that the band has never matched the production from that album (hence my excitement that Howard Benson who produced HR was producing IWTOC).

That said... LTJ came to town a month ago and I just didn't feel the same pull to see them. I would have been more excited to see A Wilhelm Scream if I went. This made me quite sad.

I just don't know what they're trying to do anymore. I liked Anthem a lot when it came out (I though it had a lot of B&B's good qualities with better production) but I haven't given it a listen in a long time. I'll probably see about listening to this online somewhere, but I'm just not that excited. THE band of my teen years no longer sparks anything but nostalgia and that makes me really depressed.

On a bad day, LTJ is better than most other bands making music today.

You didn't listen to this EP did you?

This is LTJ on the worst day of their lives and it is not better than much.

    synthesized strings sound like SHIT.

Less Than Jake is almost the exclusive reason I'm even listening to music now. I have everything they've put out to this point and I will always love them, but I can't stand the new stuff. Maybe it's because my music tastes are more mature.

I'm not trying to say they should keep playing Losing Streak for 10 years. I loved Anthem and B-Sides, but they kinda seem to have lost the direction they were heading in with Anthem, and have veered off towards a much more sugary course.

Now we must just wait for this album and hope.

its not cool to rip less than jake. its a necessity for your ska-ish soul if you gave a rats ass about pezcore/losing streak/hello rockview. theyre making shitty music nowadays, no bones about it.

    My Score:

    Justin,
please stop reminding us that Pezcore came out over 10 years ago.
    it makes me feel old.

score is averaging the score for every album post-Losing Streak.

As someone said, Anthem had a few really good tracks like Science, Short Fuse Burning or Escape from the A-Bomb House, and wasn't half as pop-ish as the latest stuff.

Otherwise i'll just add my voice to the general consensus saying that the two b-sides are rather ok while the other two tracks are plain terrible.

    My Score:

I remember when 'Losing Streak' came out and people said it was over-produced. Then 'Hello Rockview' came out and it was WAY over-produced and so on and so forth...

Here's the facts. Less Than Jake write great songs. They're not in it "for the money" and somebody hit the nail on the head when they said "it's cool to bash LTJ".

On a bad day, LTJ is better than most other bands making music today.

Score is for all of LTJ's music.

Cliche fan. I loved the earlier stuff. But I equate my loss of interest in my growing up musically and an incident at a show that I couldnt get a ticket for.

    My Score:

score is obviously for the b sides

Posted by clamum on 2006-04-04 04:54:42
    My Score:

"However, in the middle it kind of sounds like early Blink-182 covering LTJ, if that makes any sense at all."

No, it doesn't make much sense. Elaborate?

"However, be sure that this is adult-contemporary Less Than Jake."

Not quite sure what you're trying to say here...

I am streaming Rest Of MY Life right now, for the first time, and oh fuck it's so crisp and sugary, anyone with diabetes really should stay far, far away.

Never got around to hearing Anthem or B-Sides. I LOVE Borders and Boundaries. Ya think I might like Anthem then? B-Sides?

By the way, this EP blows.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 1:38 AM (EDT)

...and by "this album," of course I mean NOT this album. Duuhhrrr.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 1:26 AM (EDT)

Eh, even as mediocre as they've become, I'll still buy everything they put out, because even at their worst, LTJ is still a lot of fun to listen to. And maybe we can hope for an awesome B-Sides collection from this album, too. ::Fingers crossed::

Okay I thought I was the only person who didn't like Anthem. Kids here seemed to love it even though it really sucked.

yea, it's pop-punk. no, there's not many horns. but i like it a lot. still looking forward to the full cd.

    My Score:

I hate to sound like an old, cliche less than jake fan, but why am i so damn pissed off at this new shit?! i'm really not trying to be naive.. thirty seconds of extra horns will not change any of these songs, but there is only so far off you can treck in search of "musical progression"..

Is it really fair to say that they're making this for money? i just don't believe that.. a fair review, but it seems like it's cool to rip less than jake.

    My Score:

Bitch, bitch. I liked Anthem. As a whole, it wasn't as good as their previous full lengths, but it had some stellar tracks. Science, Plastic Cup Politics, Short Fuse Burning were all great. Between B-Sides and Anthem, there was a very solid album. Maybe Warner is pushing them away from their more ska songs, because the non album tracks here sound much better than the ones that are going to be on Out Crowd.

Posted by danperrone on 2006-04-04 00:17:37

at this point in time, it's pretty much like...less than who?

Posted by hubitcherkokov on 2006-04-04 00:15:15

Less Than Jake was one of the first bands that got me into punk/ska music and they'll always have a spot in my heart, but "Anthem" was a seriously awful album and the songs I've heard from this effort sound even worse. I still haven't heard "B is for B-Sides," but I wish they would start writing with some balls again.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at 12:14 AM (EDT)

I used to love this band, but now i could care less about them. I have yet to hear this, but it seems like their songs contained less and less ska in them. These songs without ska sound like fall out boy styled pop punk to me, and that bums me out.

Posted by inagreendase on 2006-04-04 00:12:59

I've only in a sense heard two of the songs from here. "Overrated" sounds like Bowling for Soup.

As for the full-length...eh. I liked Anthem and B-Sides, but this is super poppy and produced. There's horns in maybe a few songs, but they're really, really low in the mix. It's catchy and providing little else. I'd give it a 5, borderline 6. First disappointment of the year?

Man, The Rest Of My Life is going to be such a huge single. I bet the marketing department wants it out for graduation.

It's a good song to boot!
