I honestly cannot remember the last time I listened to a Deep Elm Records release that I outright did not like, at all. Granted some of their samplers contain a number of bands who don't do entirely much for me, but even those have a number of great tracks from some of their roster members I do like. I'm afraid that consistency is broken with Fightstar's They Liked You Better When You Were Dead.

The interesting factor surrounding the band would surely be the fact that the lead singer and guitarist is Charlie Simpson, an original member of the now defunct London-based boy band Busted. Thankfully, musical influence from that band is withheld from When You Were Dead, though there's an iffy radio rock sensibility floating about the album, which serves up early `90s post-hardcore á la Quicksand and the like, but sounding awfully watered down due to the aforementioned aspect.

You'll hear this immediately in the lead track and first single, "Paint Your Target." Throaty vocals adorn the song, which features a strong if not a very "alt-radio" fitting chorus. These are some of the record's most compelling moments, but offered in suspectible packages. When the band does step outside of this shell to build more epic and fleshed out tracks, it results in relatively boring compositions like "Cross Out the Stars" and closer "Mono."

I see Fightstar has a full-length coming out on Universal/Island this coming June, with 4 of When You Were Dead's tracks included. I suppose that makes this some sort of grandiose teaser EP, or from a different standpoint, that the band will deliver two full-lengths within the span of 3 months, which is impressively prolific no matter who you are. Hopefully it's that type of prolificness that inspires a school of songs that pander just a little less and find the band exploring territory they'll be better capable of treading further down the line.

just for the record, the word "suspectible" within the third paragraph should read "suspect." and on a tangent, latterman, for all their diy seeming stickers and stinky working class bike punk stance, are a bunch of east coast rich kids who steal tips from the bartenders working their shows. fact. if that's not fucked up, and as a genuine stinky working class kid who knows what it's like to work for your money, lemme say that it is, then you don't know what fucked up is. fuck latterman and the bikes they rode in on.

"I'd hardly call Busted a boyband. Sure, they had 3 part harmonies and they looked pretty - but they still did play their instruments..."

There's three things wrong with this quote:

    1. They're the ugliest bastards I've seen in a while.
    2. They were a boy band.
    3. They definitely didn't play their own instruments.

This band are so, so average.

    My Score:

Great album, but Walt Mink's best is Mos Def "El Producto", which was released on Atlantic.

    Score Is For It.

In situations where a band has put out albums on both major and indie labels, I always opt for the indie releases as being their best work.

Thus, I'm going to have to say that cuts like "Boots" and "Brave Beyond the Call" elevate Colossus above the still great El Producto (one of the five or six major-label releases that I actually care for).

    Fightstar sucks, by the way.

oh and even when this was good, i can't believe Deep Elm plays the role of building an indie crdibility before the majorrelease comes out. thats what all majors do these days, having indies put a release out first, while they're already signed to the major. see Acceptance and the likes,

so seriously, Deep Elm putting out a band that is signed to a major already? pretty sick...

Posted by moos on 2006-04-16 05:56:56

de dude tries to sign like the Errortype:11 / Instruction vocalist.

    try harder next time...

And I would call them a boy band. Just because their gimmick was "Hey! We play our instruments!" doesn't change anything.
    They were awful.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 15, 2006 at 7:42 PM (EDT)

I'd hardly call Busted a boyband. Sure, they had 3 part harmonies and they looked pretty- but they still did play their instruments, and alot of their later songs were standard pop-punk in the same vein as Simple Plan. Busted > Fightstar

    couple of things:

    1) Claire De Lune are no longer on Deep Elm(sadly_

2)Settlefish, Cross My Heart, Lock And Key, Slowride and Desert City Soundtrack were/are the best bands ever on Deep Elm so I don't see how you can say it has gone to shit when only one of them isn't on the label anymore.

Best Deep Elm bands of all-time:

    1. Desert City Soundtrack
    2. Red Animal War
    3. WALT MINK

Seriously, if you haven't heard Walt Mink, check out the song clips for Colossus. It's a great indie rock album.

Before anyone mentions Busted, I will, and let's leave it at that.

For those unfamiliar, Busted was a pop group with guitars who played really cheesy overproduced pop rock. Charlie (singer of Fightstar) then quit to focus on this.

Fightstar fans all act as if the reason the underground community doesn't accept them was because of Busted.

IT'S BECAUSE FIGHTSTAR ARE SHIT, IN THEIR OWN RIGHT.

They're just really generic and bland posthardcore with no soul, no balls and no originality. I'd say the exact same if the singer hadn't been some boyband clown 2 years ago. End of.

Score is for Red Animal War and Slowride. Latterman isn't bad either.

Not that Wikipedia is the most reliable source for information, but I hope this is true: "The name "Fightstar" is derived from the film Fight Club and Dogstar, the band of Keanu Reeves. Charlie has often remarked on the influence Reeves' acting has had on him, particularly in The Matrix."

So your in a pop/rock punk band and now you've jumped on the equally rubbish nu wave of screamo. Hmmm who'd have thought.

Deep Elm, you have lost your touch.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 14, 2006 at 9:27 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

Red Animal War is amazing though, can't knock that band. They are the ones that deserve to be on a major.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-04-14 09:25:30

"Red Animal War was the best thing on Deep Elm.

Deep Elm has gone to shit."

Also good were Brandtson (before this new album), Camber, and Slowride, among others.

But they still have Sounds Like Violence, Latterman and Small Arms Dealer. And Lock And Key and Clair De Lune aren't bad, either.

Grand Unification is a pretty good album I have to say as well and the video is actually pretty cool.

I think this review is a bit on the harsh side of things

    My Score:

I agree with the last post, not that bad at all. Grand Unification that has been released for a little while now in Europe, should have been reviewed here, because it's more of a complete package and actually pretty decent.

Ironically, Busted were probably a million times better and less cynical than this band could ever hope to be.
