Anathallo has always been a band of untapped potential. On all of their previous efforts, especially 2002’s Sparrows and 2003’s Holiday at the Sea, the band has shown flashes of brilliance in their approach to indie rock, made unique through the use of horns and a soft, atmospheric disposition. The closest they’ve ever come to greatness is “Don’t Kid Yourself, You Need a Physician,” circa 2003, but the band has yet to ever write anything that great again; it was upbeat, had some excellent sounding percussion, and boasted one of the coolest vocal parts I’ve ever heard in the bridge. However, for every awesome song they’ve done, they’ve had two or three not so great ones, mired by a slow pace, messy arrangements, and awkard moments. The band’s new release, Floating World, takes everything about this band and expands it tenfold. The question still remains: What happens when you take something not so great and turn it to eleven? The result is a fourteen-track album that satisfies very little and leaves the listener without two important things: anything to hold on to, and any reason to continue listening to the album.

hmm. I think I'll have to disagree with you on this one. I find the fact that their music is slightly offbeat, "refuses to climax when you think it will, or climaxes when you don't expect it to" quite refreshing. I love that they don't really follow a typical song structure. Sometimes you just get bored of being able to tell exactly what a song is going to do. I love how they manipulate the huge amount of instruments they use--at some points you can only hear a few, and it sounds smooth and beautiful, and at others it's just a huge, ugly mess of sound. THERE ARE NO FUCKING MELODIES ON THIS ALBUM I really think this is a great record. I do agree that there should be more song like "A great wind more ash." This is a good review - i really like this band but i'm glad to hear someone give it an honest review. SHIT hey I thought that a 10 just meant a reviewer thought an album was stellar in all regards, not better than everything else ever made? hey I thought that a 10 just meant a reviewer thought an album was stellar in all regards, not better than everything else ever made? a better job reviewing it? you're just mad that i didn't like it so you're looking for things to say a review consisting of only insight concerning the story behind the album is waaaaay lame dude what the hell is all this talk about ap.net? just because they actually reviewed a decent album for once Anathallo are suddenly a hype band? how bout YOU do the listening and interpreting? isn't expecting me to do so just as lazy? The whole dog thing is a Japanese myth. I forget the entire story, but they usually explain it at their shows. you guys are getting waaaaaaaaay too upset about not explaining the story to you guys To whomever was ranting about this band being true blue and 100% diy, you're right on that point. I've booked them before, they asked for pretty much nothing, were very humble and put on an awesome show. "are you being sarcastic? if you are then that's pretty funny." hold on a second... the problem I have with this review is that it does not provide the reader with accurate and relevant information, which can be misleading and does not do justice to the record. If you want to be respected for your opinions (whatever that may be) than you have an obligation to go above and beyond (the casual listen). Its your job to do that. Its a disrespect of the job, the record, your readers, and the band, all of whom deserve more than for someone to just take a listen and say a cd ruled/sucked. If that is what you do, then what right do you have to be a reviewer on a public website; why don't you leave the thorough reviews up to someone wiling to do the work and just add your comment below like everybody else? This band rules, this record is decent, this review is kinda shitty, Absolutepunk.net is really, really shitty. Score is for ap.net. hold on a second... To add to my comment: just because a band doesn't do "who you expect them to do" you put them down for that? Shame on you and your false musical perceptions. are you fucking KIDDING me... this album is one of the best of the year. This review is a crock of shit. I thought this band was pretty good and then I heard Sufjan Stevens. did someone from absolutepunk.net seriously put down the quality of someones elses writing? to be brutally honest...like my review read, this album gave me no reason whatsoever to look deeper into it, and i can guarantee you that it would make no different at all in what rating this gets...and there is no way you can tell me that i would like it more if i researched the lyrics Wait....this album is about a kid burying his dog? Like....the whole album is about that? If that is true then that is quite the original and inspiring concept. It is also incredibly fucking stupid. and for real, did anyone else read that review on ap? Darren, this review was not well written. I will admit that Dan certainly ups the punxxxx by putting down something that is so obviously beautiful. Speaking of douche bags, what banners on this site are getting more annoying by the day. I'd have Adblocked that banner if I was at home and that Lye By Mistake banner showed it's face. Yeah Gabe. And I'm sure any universally acclaimed album that you don't like is some sort attempt at getting attention by not liking it, right? Even if you right a very fair review, citing ups and downs, right? That's pretty much the same as calling The Clash "new-wave douche bags" or something, right? you make it seem like i have some sort of agenda against this band, like they said something mean about my mom three years ago or something, and now i'm mad that they're getting popular Darren, this review was not well written. I will admit that Dan certainly ups the punxxxx by putting down something that is so obviously beautiful. Well written review, but I'm going to disagree - i think its a pretty great album. I gotta comment again. Your little rant about the line "Asked a question, took a dog to the yard / Where he snarled / I dug, pulling out the bites of snakes! / And slugs and bugs and slugs and bugs and slugs and blah!". This is by far the best album of '06 from one of the best live bands I've ever seen. This guy is a joke. just wondering if you actually listened to this album? untapped potential indeed. what a boring band. it amazes me how kids in "the scene" can dig these guys. there are a ton of bands out there doing better things, but just becuase this band tours with The Format the kids eat this up. lame for the people defending the album...you do realize the reviewer's top rated bands are the fucking mighty mighty bosstones and boy sets fire right??? just wondering... Ap.net is run by a bunch of pricks, however, this record is incredible. The live show is tops. hahahahahhahahaha Nice review: explanation of my anticipated fears, objective approach, swift/sharp/logical criticism. i didn't buy the album because i was unmotivated by the songs i heard on myspace. holiday at the sea previewed so much unfulfilled potential with this release. i hope they realize they shouldn't try so hard - just make rock that feels right. This band is amazing. This album is incredible. Their live show is unbelievable. this is an awful review for an album that you obviously just didn't understand. and if you didn't see the lyrics, then you definitely didn't understand it. This might be good or it might be terrible, but I'm at least intrigued to hear what they actually sound like, now. cheep? are we baby birds? Nice cheep shot at ap to try and give legitimacy to your review, im sure it will be accepted on this site by the users now. Go back to english class to learn how to write, and take a music class while you're there. God, whatever. This album rules, fuck everything this dude says. Just because a band experiments nowadays they're written off as going 'too far' and 'off the beaten path'. This band rocks when they should and is quiet when they should be as well. They take some traditonal african inspired chant like choruses and throw them in parts that just blow you the fuck away. Buy or download and support this band. They are amazing. |
