Dead to Fall’s third full-length release on Victory Records is easily the best effort by Chicago’s metal masters. The band amazingly is still going on even though they like to play musical chairs with their lineup. Though the lineup is once again completely different, the band’s really starting to come around this time. On both Everything I Touch Falls to Pieces and Villainy and Virtue, the overall experience was mediocre at best, with the highlights hidden behind a wave of mediocrity and average at best songwriting. The Phoenix Throne is one hell of an improvement over this band’s earlier work.

On Dead to Fall’s first full-length, they had a strong Swedish influence, which they down played to a more ‘mosh-friendly’ approach on Villainy and Virtue. Phoenix thankfully gets the mix done right, with Dead to Fall completely nailing the Swedish-influenced riffs and still retaining a few breakdowns throughout. The best example of Dead to Fall’s improvement is on "Heroes." The song starts off like one cut from their last release, then the dueling Swedish melodic guitars sneak in and creates a killer structure. The melodic solo is only icing on the ever-so-tasty cake.

Another problem with Dead to Fall was mediocrity and John Hunt’s vocals. The similar sounding song structures and Hunt’s monotonous vocals crafted a piece that could easily dull their listeners to sleep. Thankfully, these problems are fixed for the most part. While the songs on Phoenix are better at separating and sounding different, Hunt’s vocals are still a little bit too monotonous, even though he now switches his shriek up from time to time.

Coming into the experience I expected an average at best album hurt by lacking songwriting. Thankfully, Dead to Fall overcame this problem. Also, their artwork should once again draw in new fans, as it’s one of the year’s best so far.

Dead to Fall’s The Phoenix Throne has led to an effective 1-2 metalcore punch by Victory Records, with both Atreyu and Dead to Fall releasing discs within a week of each other. In the end, if you ever had even a slight interest in Dead to Fall, pick this up, because this is easily their best work to date and solves almost all of their previous shortcomings.

10x better than this and this stuff's very good.

    My Score:

I think many of you are either crack smoking metal heads or you're just plain retarded. And just for the record Between The Buried And me sucks balls Just like Dragonforce

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-07-26 12:33:14

It's Between the Buried and Me.

Posted by EyesLikeBombs on 2006-07-16 14:33:35

Darkest Hour really isn't good enough for me to care what genre they are. Hot damn.

And if metalcore doesn't exist, what would you consider Beyond The Buried And Me? You can't honestly say they're metal, hardcore, or even progrock.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-06-24 14:28:12

Darkest Hour had breakdowns. Their pre-Undoing Ruin era stuff was metalcore. But 'Undoing Ruin' is metal.

    Posted by Leatherface_45 on 2006-06-23 23:33:30

DARKEST HOUR is thrash metal...there is no way around it...they have no breakdowns...which is influenced from hardcore...but since evryone here has a PH.D in musicthen what is Darkest Hour then...and dont answer "a shitty band"...fuckin kids...

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-06-18 22:59:57

    Darkest Hour mainstream?

It cracks me up that because a band is well known around the metal/punk/hardcore crowd that they're considered mainstream or popular. You made my day.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 18, 2006 at 7:34 PM (EDT)

    RKL...

No one is saying this isn't metal because it's on Victory.

We're saying that real metal is completely different sounding than this crap. And yeah, there is such a thing as metalcore. You see, it grew out of the crossover scene of the late 80's with a little band called Rorschach, and a very influential band called Converge that formed in the early 90's. It's a mix of hardcore and metal.

rkl, don't hate just because you don't have the knowledge.

At best, this band and Darkest Hour are shitty mainstream metal. Listen to Mayhem.

    whouldnt = shouldn't

Posted by moneenerd on 2006-06-18 12:32:31

Also, MISERY INDEX is a metal band, up and down. Ive seen these guys live. Theres nothing fucking scene about these motherfuckers. Even when speaking to the crowd, the vocalist growls in death metal fashion.

Popularity and big media exposure whouldnt lessen one's ability to BE metal. Thats fucking ridiculous.

Posted by moneenerd on 2006-06-18 12:30:17

Ok. SO let's just SAY that bands like Darkest Hour and Dead To Fall are actual, real, solid, straight-up metal bands.

But if they are to sign with a label like VICTORY, that would imply that they are trying to appeal to the hardcore crowd. I mean, VICTORY is a hardcore music label. Well, at least that's what they tell us when theyre not throwing Hawthorne Heights albums in our faces!

ANyway, so why would big metal monsters like DH and DTF wanna join a label who, for the most part, is made up of entirely hardcore or post-hardcore acts?

Hmmm. Maybe cuz they want to be in the hardcore scene? They wanna be known as a metalcore band? I dunno. Thats my assumption.

It's like signing to METAL BLADE records when your in a screamo band. Look at As I Lay Dying? The only reason they havent been brought up in this metalcore discussion is because they are on METALBLADE RECORDS. If they were on VISTORY or BRIDGE 9, it would be a totally different story.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-06-18 01:12:48

I haven't even seen Misery Index on headbanger's ball and I only watch HBB occasionly... Last videos I saw on it where by Silent Civilian and Phoenix Mourning.

    My Score:

I love this album! Dead to Fall know what they are doing.

Posted by JLJL on 2006-06-16 15:53:11

Just because its on the Headbanger's ball doesn't mean you should jock it. Seriously, what's up with all the metalcore kids liking Misery Index?

Posted by rkl on 2006-06-16 13:31:42

misery index(starring a good portion of dying fetus) is a metal band as well, you stupid shits.

as is darkest hour, dead to fall, etc. theres no such thing as metalcore.

will, you prove yourself more and more an idiot with every post you make.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-06-15 23:56:56

    Wonderful typos...

Anyways, I also listen to Refused, Millencolin, Bouncing Souls, NOFX, etc.

Honestly, at least I'm not one of the kids obsessing over Hawthorne Heights, Aiden, and From First to Last.

Posted by WilliamMarinovic on 2006-06-15 21:03:16

I don't know about "At Tha Gates," but I'm starting to suspect that you're just a messageboard troll with every post you make. If that's the case, please stop wasting your time writing phony reviews.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 9:02 PM (EDT)

no, between the buried and me is a bad clone of a lot of vastly superior mathy metalcore bands. if this is what you think is metal, then you don't have a proper background and education in metal and hardcore. this is why you're reviewing and jocking such shit. because you apparently don't know where this is coming from, and that leads to you sounding really ignorant and like some goddamn kid that discovered hardcore 6 months ago and is suddenly acting like an expert.

I always love it when newbies try to namedrop.

I wasn't name dropping. Besides Cannibal Corpse, I own cds by all of those bands (the last two Darkest Hour cds, BTBAM's 'Alaska' and 'Anatomy of,' and the new Misery Index cd).

And all of the bands are metal. You'd probably consider At Tha Gates metal right? Well then you'd also have to call Darkest Hour metal too.

And Between the Buried and Me is metal, it's a little out there, with a lot of influences, but it's metal.

"Darkest Hour, Between the Buried and Me, Misery Index, Cannibal Corpse (kinda like 'em), etc.

I do listen to real metal. Sometimes."

of those bands only canibal corpse is an actual metal band (and a shitty one at that) and you only "kinda like 'em". seriously though, i'm not trying to be an asshole, but this shit you're jocking is garbage and represents everything that is trend-jumping and tired in heavy music right now. you really need to give yourself an education and stop following/reviewing this shit.

Posted by WilliamMarinovic on 2006-06-15 13:57:54

I always love it when newbies try to namedrop. Misery Index is the only thing on your list close to actual metal, and even that is stretching it a bit (they are more in with the crust crowd).

Seriously, if I didn't know of people like CrazyToledo in real life, I'd think he was the greatest troll ever. Sadly, though, this terrible taste in music is all too real, and all we can hope for is that his ignorance will subside into okay music (and don't hold your breath, because most people on this site aren't even anywhere close to that yet).

also...what the fuck is up with your obsession with cover art all of a sudden? No one buys records based on cover art. It makes a nice bonus but it is not going to affect the actual quality of the record.

You desperately need to listen to a real metal band.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 3:52 PM (EDT)

    metalcore - heavy metal hardcore

most of the time sounds like overproduced and superficial garbage. if you try to combine converge and judas priest, you'll most likely come up with something that sounds like atreyu.

    hence overproduced and superficial garbage.

Don't compare Converge to atreyu, that's like comparing the flu to aids.

Can I add an exponent to a "greater than" sign? If I can, cube the above function.

    :)

    Ken? gladimnotemo?

I'm not really sure there's anyone else who posts here with something resembling a decent taste in music.

"their artwork should once again draw in new fans"

because, so very often, kids buy cds because of the pretty cover, regardless of the music inside.

(yes, if you play metal, and are on Victory records, youre a metalcore band)
thanks for reinforcing my opinion that "metalcore"'s meaning is "metal for kids too scene to tell people they like metal."

Posted by moneenerd on 2006-06-13 13:10:00

Ive tried to like these guys but just cant feel it. Metalcore (yes, if you play metal, and are on Victory records, youre a metalcore band) has become so boring and has easily been the genre to burn out the fastest in the last few years.

In my opinion, the last 2 decent albums of this sort have been the last Camilla Rhodes record, and Misery Signals' "Magnum Heart". Everything after seems so... i dunno, unimportant.

If you wanna hear a great band that has been doing this whole Swedish metal with a hardcore flavor thing for years before any Victory bands have, do yourself a favor and find Negate's "Enemy" album.

Dante: this is a damn good metal album. toledo gets bonus points for not having the suffix "core" anywhere in the review. i dont know about a 9 either, but punknews doesnt allow for 8.5

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at 11:13 AM (EDT)

I'm almost tempted to make an account just to write a proper review for every album that you faultily portray.

Posted by superdude on 2006-06-13 10:01:12

This review was pretty good, but here's how I'd make it better:

    1. Chicago's metal masters? AHEM - Smashing Pumpkins

    2. That Jame Frey guy's second book was set in Chicago, and he said much of it is fabricated. I wonder if Chicago is one of those fabrications.

    3. I don't know, I've never been there.

did nights like these get their name from the lucero song?

they're from the same town, so i'd assume they know each other.

I'll be the first to make the obvious, "Did he give another Victory release a nine?" comment.
However I kind of liked Everything I touch falls to pieces and the V and V one, so this may be alright.
But a nine? I'm not sure
