I really tried to like this album. I really did. You see, I'm not even a huge AFI fan. I love The Art of Drowning, but I can't claim knowledge of every song the band has released. I do know that I like a lot of what I've heard, and I know that over 100 songs were written for this record. I was hoping for something epic, that AFI would release their American Idiot. Or at least something substantial and worth the wait. Instead, I end up asking myself, "This is it?"

I love I wanna get a mohawk Does anyone even remember I Wanna Get A Mohawk? I felt this album was incredibly poor. I thought the fact the album was going to have more electronic elements would be a good thing. but it turns out its just radio friendly dance shit. 2 songs on this album are decent but besides that its garbage. ehhh, i think its good. i find it funny how a bunch of assholes get on here and whine and bitch about bands that whine and bitch through their songs...ha. "fuck afi. i dont like them anymore. meh...all i listen to is propagandhi ehhh"....you guys suck. its people like the people on this website that make the scene look like a bunch of fucking losers who just hate on things. you never really give anything outside of your little circle a chance. punk is changing my friends, and i think you guys better open your eyes a little. the bands are getting tired of writing the same songs over and over again (except for pennywise, who've been doing that for ever now). AFi is one of my favorite bands and whenever i hear their name or music it makes my heart beat even faster. i love them and i have to say like the anonymous person that commented earlier true AFI fans should respect the change. I think this album is amazing......although i miss alot of elements from the older stuff, i love that they are trying new stuff ....so if you dont like this album then that is on you but whatever happened to supporting a band you like for whatever they do. I am and have been an Afi fan for about 8 years now but what I heard come out of my speakers hurt my ears. Afi is so much better than that, I just think its a matter of Afi focusing on things other than their music! AFI has always bitten the bean bag, now they just bite alot harder. AFI is officially "filling the slot" of the main A&R focus by their label for the time being, hence the large album sales. This album proves that if you spend enough money on production and marketing you will sell records. Weak Sauce is what they should have named this album, I think it is total disaster. amazing album. Also, to VPOY and ATASF fans: I think the real problem is bands that start off with a good cult following who put a lot of blood, sweat, heart, and even money into each and everythign they do, be it going crazy at shows, or purchasing every album they put out, then years later that band decides that theyd rather create soemthing more diverse to attract a different crowd all together. First off, I'm not even an "old" fan. I didn't start listening to them until the NItro comp with "A Single Second" on it. I alsodon't like VPOY or ATASF very much. P.S.- I didn't like the reference to American Idiot in this review. Green Day isn't a very good band in the first place, and American Idiot was by far their worst album. Go back to jerking off to Black Sails then if you don't like what they're doing now. i have only heard of afi and so i thouhgt i'd try them out. i bought the cd and thought it was ok but reading these reviews it sonds likv afi has had a mayjor change in there latest cd to come. i've heard a couple of older songs and now i wonder why change right now. i mean i heard there pretty old. i think this cd is ok but i dont know afi that wel. soooo this album isnt too great. the second song is good, but the rest are pretty expieremental and downright not very hardcore. boooooo-urns. We were listening to this shit in my FYE, gave it two spins, and then put in that Wreckers CD (Michelle Branch and some other chick I'd fuck.). what do you mean their american idiot if i had never heard AFI and i heard this album i would still think it was absolute pathetic trash Beth, you and I must have been listening to two different albums because the Decemberunderground I heard is even more produceded to shit than STS was. The more I listen to DecemberUnderground the more I absolutely LOVE it!!!! I was really expecting at first to hear a more edgier sound on this album, because their last album was so prduced. I have had a special relationship with all of their albums over the years. And when I hear the newest album I am convinced that AFI is not predictable at all. i, like the reviewer, wanted to like this so bad. thing is, I AM a diehard AFI fan, and will always give them a shot no matter how bad the previous album was. and sing the sorrow wasnt a bad album. it just got old. there was once a time where i loved that cd. i just went back to listening to their old stuff nonstop when sing the sorrow got old. and i understand a need to change, but they were always changing. every album they ever put out was different from the others. but they still played hardcore punk. now they are doing a genre switch on us, and it sounds like a poorly done mix of depeche mode, the cure, underoath, and their old stuff. this album is for the most part terrible, kill caustic and miss murder are the only tracks that really stood out for me. I like this a hell of a lot more than STS. Although its not like their older stuff, its very catchy. Definately one of the better major label releases of the year. And this thing has at least 4-5 singles that could blow up. BLACK SAILS was probably one of the first hardcore-ish albums I ever got into other than maybe Minor Threat. It was my first encounter with gang vocals and mosh-y breakdowns. The last two AFI albums have neither, and that is why they are lame. great, great review. colin pretty much stated exactly how i feel about this record. There are hints of a few embers and ashes remaining, but this band is all but extinguished from the force this band used to represent. i just spit coffee all over my monitor, b/c black sails is where afi got so lame. I'm a die-hard AFI fan, I have all their albums, I know all of their songs by heart, and not only is this an AFI album, but it is one of the BEST AFI albums.
