With a cooler full of goodies, myself and some friends made the trip out to the beautiful and perfectly located Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. I must say, I applaud management for making this venue the hardest to find in my experience of concert-going. I'm not going to lie. The hours it took to get to the venue pissed us off, and consequently, we decided to hang out in the parking lot with others instead of seeing the opening bands. I love seeing the opening bands, but last night was about Brand New and their return.

This is the third or fourth time I've seen Brand New and their energy was out of this world. Starland Ballroom was on the verge of exploding, with everyone screaming out every single word to every single song. I could barely hear Jesse over the crowd. The band was in top form and sounded great. The floor was packed, as well as the sides, and there was barely anywhere to move.

Jesse came out to the stage and the thumping of the drums began as he yelled "I'm sinking like a stone to the sea...I'm burning like a bridge for your body..." The crowd went crazy -- and Brand new is back, at least for now.

Highlights for me were "Tatou" (just because it was the first song they played), "Quiet Things..." (I love this song live), "I Will Play My Game..." (crazy energy), "Soco Lime," "Seventy Times Seven" and the last song, "Play Crack the Sky." Jesse didn't talk much during the show, but made some comments such as saying the album had been finished on Monday and they were glad to be back. Later on before the encore, "I'm going to go and pretend to go away for a few minutes and I'll be back to play a couiple more." Thanks for being honest, Jesse.

Recently there's been a lot of buzz over the demos and whatnot. I'm going to be brutally honest -- the new songs didn't sound too great. One of them, and unfortunately my friend agrees, sounded like Maroon 5. But I'm sure the new album is going to be killer.

All in all, a great show. High energy, but seemed rather short and I wish they would play more stuff off Your Favorite Weapon, such as "Failure by Design," "Jude Law..," etc. I'm excited to see more shows on this tour.

Without further ado, here is the set list:

  • Tautou
  • new song
  • Okay, I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't
  • Jaws Theme Swimming
  • The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows
  • new song (Untitled)
  • I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light
  • The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot
  • The Shower Scene
  • Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis
  • The No Seat Belt Song
  • Soco Amaretto Lime
  • new song (Piano, Sound FX) [untitled 7]
  • Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades
  • Seventy Times Seven
  • Play Crack the Sky

A) Hardly any energy. I came to see Brand FUCKING New.. not Dashboard!!
B) Not Enough off the 1st album which completely trumps Deja
C) Jesse's speech about being away and working was BULLSHIT! He pretty much insulted the crowd.. not intentionally.. he just can't form a coherent sentence live..which suprises me.
D) His disappearing act was completely akward..didn't say a word about it
E) Ended the set with an acoustic song.. and no encore
F) Only one of the new songs had any substance to it.. one sounds EXACTLY like Soco only with different lyrics.

Ultimately I was HIGHLY disappointed with this show (my first Brand New show). So much so that I would probably pass up the opportunity to see them again. I'm pretty much heart broken considering there was more crowd interaction at the Jack's Mannequin show I went to. Not to mention that the easiest job in the world had to be being the Brand New drummer.. homie was seriously there for 3- 4 songs MAX...
sorry if I crushed anyone's spirits

you are a complete moron. COMPLETE MORON. First off, you say at there live show there wernt enough songs off of there first album, and then you go on saying thats Your Favorite Weapon is a better album then Deja. Okay, well if thats your opionion, then please dont listen to brand new. please go listen to dashboard conffesional or whatever emo band your into because obviously if you think your favorite weapon is more musically and lyrically better then deja entendu, you have some problems. im not knocking your favorite weapon, but please. Deja Entendu is one of the greatest albums ever, In music history. Are you dissing Jesse Lacey bitch? Lastly, "the song ended with an acoustic song and no encore." you are seriously pissing me off. the last song im 99.9 percent sure was Play Crack The Sky. Find me a better song by brand new then play crack the sky. go ahead. play crack the sky is amazing. theres nothing else to say. thats the best song by any band to end any show with.period. i hope i never see you at a brand new show.

Jesse Lacey writes amazing shit listen again if you missed it, and Brand New really isn't pop punk anymore, don't expect them to just jam their first album maybe you should have gone to see them when that one came out douche, their style is changed so much from the first album if your looking for that shit go see fallout boy.

Anonymous (June 26, 2006)

who are joining them on the tour?

colin (June 26, 2006)

man untitled 7 was a pretty bad song. 1,3, and 6 showed a lot of strength. 5 and 8 had promise. the rest... meh at best.

Anonymous (June 25, 2006)

of course they still wear girl's jeans

RiseAbove (June 25, 2006)

Starland Ballroom is not a hard venue to find. Brand New is also not worth $15 to see.

"everyone cremes their girl jeans over untitled 7... i don't get it."

Dudes still wear girl jeans?

Anonymous (June 24, 2006)

most overrated band ever

R, i feel like an idiot, but what does that mean?

Anonymous (June 24, 2006)

Saw this show tonight. Wish they'd played more old stuff. Decent show. Shitty crowd.

Anonymous (June 24, 2006)

I LOVE SCOTT, your feet left the ground way too long ago if you can afford to make that statement.

i know jesse's hot for mo' but brand new doesn't sound like him.

Anonymous (June 23, 2006)

They play 'Untitled 7'? Stellar. That was the best song of the leaked demos by far.

Anonymous (June 23, 2006)

*coughcough* MORRISEY*cough*

Some of the demo songs were good and some were pretty bad.

I'm here to tell you that I know that some of those songs will not be on the album. As I don't know many of their names, I don't know which ones. I refer to them as things like "that 7 minute song with the line from the Donne poem that Steinbeck took." I've seen that labeled as Cleanser. Anyway, it will be interesting to see if the final song and track selection. This album could go in many directions on the suck-o-meter, but I have my hopes.

HeresLookinAtYou (June 23, 2006)

every time I go to starland something ridiculous happens. one time we smoked a blunt with the cab driver on the way to Tsunami Benefit show, another time I got arrested before seeing Alkaline Trio and Senses Fail ...and I still got to see Alkaline Trio

Anonymous (June 23, 2006)

good review I'm most likely seeing them, their albums are both pretty different but both pretty kickass, can't wait for the new one.
