The Mongoose has only been listening to Lifetime for about 6 months now. He wanted to see what all the hype was about, so he bought Hello Bastards and Jersey’s Best Dancers. The Mongoose was very impressed.

Somewhere in the Swamps of Jersey is a double-CD compilation of early material, covers, demos, live tracks, and two complete versions of their out-of-print 1993 debut, Background. The first version of Background has been remixed and the second version is the remastered original.

The self-titled opening track is the Mongoose’s favorite song on the entire album. It reminds him of everything he loves about punk rock. It’s catchy, it’s heavy, and most importantly, it’s fast. In fact, the entire first CD is like that. Other standout tracks from the first CD include: "Starsixtynine," "Young, Loud, and Scotty," and the cover of Billy Bragg’s "New England."

It’s the second CD that the Mongoose has a problem with. You see, the Mongoose doesn’t understand the point of having two versions of one album. He doesn’t care that one has been “remixed” and one has been “remastered.” To be honest, the Mongoose can’t even tell a difference between the two. The second disc does, however, contain some good live tracks, but the Mongoose doesn’t care much for live music on CDs. He would much rather be there himself.

If you’re new to Lifetime, then the Mongoose would suggest that you pick up Jersey’s Best Dancers first. Somewhere in the Swamps of Jersey is a very good compilation, but it’s probably not the best album to start with. The Mongoose recommends Lifetime to fans of hardcore bands like Kid Dynamite, Gorilla Biscuits, and Youth of Today. The Mongoose would also like to point out that he wrote this shitty review without once making reference to Dr. Dan Yemin. Except just now.

The Mongoose gives the first CD a 9/10 and the second CD a 6/10.

i always like reviews better when someone is new to the band because, it generally means theyre relying solely on the musical content, instead of judging off past albums, scene-place, etc.

or you could quit bitching and review it yourself. punknews will post multiple reviews of the same album.

No offence to The Mongoose, but The Someone would like to see this collection reviewed by someone who has been listening to Lifetime for more than 6 months and has more knowledge of the band. Aubin I'm looking at you on this one.

    My Score:

As Long as Dr. Dan keeps bringin it in Paint it Black or Lifetime or Kid Dynamite you should show up. The guy is as old as me and hardcore moves him. When I say show up it means either go to shows or buy albums or whatever you think is hardcore.

Just because you got the kids or the wife doesn't mean your not up for a little fun.

"The funny/sad part of it is, Lifetime will end up getting dicked. The royalty rate is MUCH better on indies like jade Tree. Their records aren't gonna reap the kind of sales necessary to make it in the "big league" of the major labels. They might sell more records this time around, but the cash will once again end up in somebody else's pocket."

The funny/sad part is, you probably won't come back to read this.
Do some research. And, by research, I mean just read the threads on Lifetime on this site. First off, Decaydence is an independent label, linked to another independent label. The fact that it is funded by Pete Wentz's personal money doesn't make it a major. When the deal was announced, it was made known that the deal they made with Decaydence will return far more money to Lifetime than any other label, major or indie, could possibly hope to give.
Also, go talk to Strike Anywhere about all that money Jade Tree gives their bands, and see if you still believe staying on Jade Tree would have been a good decision (though I wish they would have gone to a label that wasn't Pete Wentz's, but that's just personal jealousy).

Lifetime is kinda like Saves The Day, a likeable but not brilliant band whose sound was copped by umpteen lame bands that got rich by purveying mediocrity. So Lifetime will probably lower their common denominator a bit in hopes of cashing in. And it won't work.

saves the day came after lifetime. so they are one of those "bands that got rich by purveying mediocrity" that copped their sound. though their records are likeable. anyway, i'm happy for the reunion thing, but i don't know what to exept from their new record. i mean, i'm exited, but i'm "scared" as well. i'm a lot less pleased with the label they're on, and i don't get why not stay with jade tree.

"lifetime before reunion = amazing, influential, lengendary

lifetime after reunion = sellouts, suckups, horrible."

Sorry dude, but I don't see how you've managed to morph the assertion that Lifetime was NEVER that great into they were amazing but now they're sellouts.

Lifetime was a likeable band. It just seems that their status grew ridiculously during their absence.

The funny/sad part of it is, Lifetime will end up getting dicked. The royalty rate is MUCH better on indies like jade Tree. Their records aren't gonna reap the kind of sales necessary to make it in the "big league" of the major labels. They might sell more records this time around, but the cash will once again end up in somebody else's pocket.

AND the Fall Out Boy alliance doesn't exactly work wonders their stature as a DIY band.

They'll probably come out with an album that sounds like their imitators.

Lifetime is kinda like Saves The Day, a likeable but not brilliant band whose sound was copped by umpteen lame bands that got rich by purveying mediocrity. So Lifetime will probably lower their common denominator a bit in hopes of cashing in. And it won't work.

Plus, they're probably over 30 so you kids shouldn't like them, right?

after reading the "from buddyhead" post, now i know where half the people in this review get their material

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at 6:36 PM (EDT)

    From Buddyhead:

You know how when you grow up, and you get suspicious about people from your childhood possibly being lamer than you remembered, but all you needed was some kind of closure or something to wrap it all up and prove that they really were lame? Y’know, like that kid who gave you your first beer… he was really into Slayer, drove a Camaro, fingerbanged your babysitter, and you thought he was super rad cos he had a mustache… and then 10 years later you saw him bussing tables at a Sizzler. Well, that band Lifetime is a lot like that. We all kinda got tricked into thinking they were sorta ok way back there somewhere in the 90’s. Somehow they would always end up on a mix tape some cute chick made you with a bunch of other bands that actually were cool… like Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate… and you were smoke-screened of their actual wackness cos they sounded sorta ok in between the good bands, and you couldn’t exactly put your finger on what was lame until…… they reform years later, and fuckin’ FALLOUT BOY signs them to their record label. Ahhhh… that’s riiiiiight… Lifetime always sucked. It’s all so clear now.

Lifetime is an example of a band that got better with time. I'm not too impressed by their early recordings, although it is good to hear them.

Who cares that they're on Decaydance? Does it matter?

Ain't it great seeing your "legendary" heroes, Lifetime, sucking up to Fall Out Boy?

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at 10:26 AM (EDT)

    your mom listens to lifetime.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 10:41 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

yeah, i think lifetime, and dr. dan's other bands are special simply because they make hardcore that is not narrowed down to a certain demographic. Lifetime is extremely poppy at times, the vocals can be slurred, the lyrics aren't followed 100% correctly by the liner notes, kid dynamite was extremely angry and quick, but was by no means a testosterone overdose.

Charles Bronson is great, but its a certain mood music. Lifetime and KD have an energy that my mom or my pissed off little brother can engage in without it being watered down or made 'soft' by its broad reach.

I'm split. I never thought lifetime re-invented music, but I do think if kids got into lifetime instead of most mainstream bands, and if falloutboy kids start buying kid dynamite records, all the better.

    wyzo

How did The Mongoose not hear this band until 6 months ago?

I was slow on the uptake and heard them for the first time in the fall of 2000.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 7:45 PM (EDT)

The annoying thing about Lifetime fans is that they act like Lifetime and Kid Dynamite were the only ones playing hardcore in the 90's. Like everything else was Earth Crisis or Madball. Whatever, Charles Bronson blow these fucks away.

Posted by rkl on 2006-06-24 18:55:46

lifetime is only legendary because of the crushing support of fanboys like you.

not a shitty band, but not that great either.

"Why is this band so overrated? I actually own the two Jade Tree albums, bought them when the band was still intact. But the heaping post-breakup praise for this band is unnecessary and undeserved. Sure, they're OK. The funny thing is, their reunion will NOT make Lifetime into the next Fall Out Boy, as they're expecting. OK, so everybody in a band likes them. But they're not cute enough, so "the kids," who buy this shit, won't buy.

They should've stayed a broken-up, legendary band -- even though they don't deserve to be legendary. I mean, what kind of accolade is it to be proclaimed legendary by Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, and the minions of MySpace emo kids? Just because a bunch of idiots like you doesn't mean you're important. You can find plenty of idiots out there who love Bon Jovi (another Jersey band) but WHO CARES?

    Dream on, twerps."

So in summary, listen to this retard's opinion about a band he doesnt think is good when most of the natural world can see it..
I hate jaded fucks that" bought both the albums when the band was intact" just so EVERYONE knows thats hes legit. Fuck off,Lifetime is legendary. I waited six years to see this band again at the reunion shows and they were just as good as they were then,as they were in 98'.

I already own Seven Inches and I was not into Background AT ALL, and unfortunately for me, the duel CDs contain the same songs from those two Cds over and over again. Kinda a waste of money although the first songSomewhere In The Swamps Of Jersey is incredible.

If you have all their other Cds, download the first track and keep your money for the new albums hopefully coming out soon.

I find myself listening to Hello Bastards much more when I pull out Lifetime than Jersey's Best.. However I find it hard to decide on which Album is 'better'. I think JBD is more refined but I enjoy the overall impression Hello Bastards made. Hello Bastards stands out to me and Jersey's Best is, in my opinion, the culmination of their evolution in the sound Lifetime was creating as an up and coming 'hardcore' band.

I also found the third person references to be irritating.
I heard Lifetime might be recording another album is this true? I don't know how I feel about that.

I'm gernaerlly tend to think that Jersey's Best Dancers is far better than Hello Bastards. The Mongoose seems to agree. What do other people think? There are good moments and songs on HB, but I think that as am album and overall JBD is just above and beyond better.

"Why hasn't anyone figured out that Lifetime was never really any good?"

Because we haven't all recieved buddyhead's memo.

I dont like the beatles. Its an option.

anyway, lifetime is beginning to come down for me from icons to puttingout one of my favorite records (jersey's best..) but I'd be happier if kid dynamite made another record.

And, okay, Eleanor Rigby is pretty perfect.

    dudes

there was a reason why lifetime wasnt big back in the day and why they broke up. it still pertains today...their music isnt that good and it still wont be with their new cd on decaydance. Its mind boggling to as why there is such a "godlike' view of them today.

    My Score:

I bought this a few days before it's official release but have only listened to it twice. Some of the stuff on the first disc is just difficult to listen to. The songs are four minutes long and Ari just whines "ooooh ooooooo wooooooooah" over half of it. Most of it just honestly isn't good.

I still haven't been able to bring myself to listen to the second disc. Maybe someday.

I could only skim this review, due to the reviewer refering to himself in third person. Score is for the review, I haven't heard this.

I thought The Mongoose was dead. Oh well.

Ugh, please never refer to yourself in third person again, especially with your stupid-ass nickname.

This band could not be any more overrated if they tried. Not even if they reformed and signed to the guy from Fall Out Boy's label. Oh, wait...

    My Score:

The title track is pretty great and possibly the most accessible song they've written, but I can kind of see how it didn't fit into the context of Jersey.

    The Embrace cover is money.

This whole thing is decent. Background is slightly memorable but can get really, really tepid. That and it's just a really depressing album.
