First off, let me say that if you hated the new Catch 22, Permanent Revolution might either make you hate them more or less -- not neccessarily great, but not as bad as made out to be. Dinosaur Sounds had a few good songs on it, but of course was no (and there never will be another) Keasbey Nights.

But Permanent Revolution -- it's not terrible, just not great. It really doesn't sound a thing like Dinosaur Sounds. It has more of a story feel to it (the whole album takes place around Leon Trotsky). The change is great on some tracks, and really bad on others. Ryan Eldred sounds great on the album -- for the most part.

The horns on the album are fantastic, though. Dinosaur Sounds was good when it came to horns, but I think these horns are just great, helping save the bad tracks. "The Party Song" could be on Kidz Bop if you take them away, and "Alma Ata" should just be played on a cruise -- no, make it elevator music. It’s basically a bad jazz song.

On the good side of things, this album delivers two of my new favorite Catch 22 songs: "The Spark" and "Bad Party." "The Spark" is the song you can hear in the background on Catch 22's website with Kevin Gunther talking. “The Spark"'s horns are easily the best on the CD, and overall it's just a great, great song to chill out to. Then the end comes, and makes you just want to punch someone in the face! "Bad Party" has amazing lyrics (something you just don't see from new Catch 22 these days), and is by far the best track on the CD. Ryan Eldred sounds great on it, and the horns can get stuck in your head. "Bad Party" just makes you want to jump up and skank, and I hope that the next time I see Catch 22 they play that song so I can do just that. "Prologue" has an OK verse, but an amazing chorus, and good horns as well.

So overall, Permanent Revolution isn’t what I thought it would be, but that’s not a bad thing. The songwriting on this album is superb, and like I said before, these horns are great, almost as good as Alone in a Crowd. I have to applaud Catch 22 on doing something different, and they pulled it off pretty well too. So overall, if you’re a Catch 22 fan, you should go out and buy this album, and if this is what to come from Catch 22, I see good things coming back their way.

So I finally heard this album.

    Its godawful.

But its mostly becuase its some of the worst lyrics I've heard in my life. I'd rather read Sum 41 lyrics.

    My Score:

I will always like the work of C22, alone in the crowd was a masterpiece, and DS was also a very good album, it's a shame they compare C22 with SM, they are different band with different styles, this album is a great add on to my C22 collection!

good record. if it wasn't for about 2 or 3 filler songs, i'd give it a 9.

I really like everything Catch 22 has released, and Alone In a Crowd is better than Keasby Nights. I don't see why that gets so much love when Everything Goes Numb completely destroyed it.

"of course was no (and there never will be another) Keasbey Nights."

I think you will find there was another one released by SM :)

fair album, but I have to mention that I think dinosaur sounds has the best catch22 song ever on it - untitled. they should play skatepunk with horns. and no vocals. amen.

Am I the only one who thinks "Alone In A Crowd" is actually better than "Keasbey Nights?"

    Probably.

"I studied Russian History in high school"

wow that really gives you an expert opinion, doesnt it?

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at 12:15 AM (EDT)

Allmusic's review also mentions the "Can You Feel The Love Tonight"-ness of the last song. I can't say, seeing as I haven't heard that song since junior high.
This album is freaking awesome. I will probably write my own review, simply because I think it's so rad, and have a good deal to say about it.

    My Score:

This album is amazing. Finally redemption for the remnants of Catch 22. This is the first good release post-Keasbey. Dinosaur Sounds, Alone In A Crowd, Washed Up, all horrible. Permanent Revolution 1) has much better sounding horn section and 2) is a concept album, which fits together perfectly. I studied Russian History in high school and they were right on target with Leon Trotsky's life.

    Ahhh, I missed Skaboom's response....kinda just skimmin...

Your right man about comparing the two bands. They both now have completely different styles. I just like the old style better thats all.

Kirby! I just scored some All Star game tickets! Drivin up to Pitt next week! Dont ask what I paid....

Anyways, Catch 22 is an allright band, but after the key members left after their first record. they havnt been the same.

I cant wait for Streetlight's new record! Peace!

First off, I'd like to point out that Mr. Anonymous who made 8 nearly identical negative comments within 5 minutes of each other is not fooling anyone.

    Get a life, dude.

This cd is good. Not great, but after DS, I had pretty low expectations for this band, so I was quite surprised. It's sad that any C22 review still mentions KN, their sound has changed so much that the albums aren't really even comparable. The horns on this album are fantastic, and this is the first C22 album with good guitar tones. I hope this is a sign of them moving in the right direction.

Give up. Sell your horns and buy Streetlight Manifesto's discography. Also, buy me tickets to the All-Star game.

as sacreligious as it seems to be, but i have to say, i think that alone in a crowd is better than keasbey nights. it was recorded better, and they played better. the harmonies on it are top notch, the "you're pushin i;m pulling" one in "arm to arm" is worth the price of the cd all on its own. also, i get an early elvis costello vibe from this new album. it took me a few listens to get into, but i dig it

First off, let me say that if you hated the new Catch 22, Permanent Revolution might either make you hate them more or less -- not neccessarily great, but not as bad as made out to be. Dinosaur Sounds had a few good songs on it, but of course was no (and there never will be another) Keasbey Nights.

Dude...there totally was another Keasbey Nights. Streetlight Manifesto recorded it...duh.

A more accurate statement would be, "Catch 22 will never record another Keasby Nights".

    My Score:

Totally meh. I am not digging the fact that they use a 311-styled vocal melody in one song and that the closer sounds EXACTLY like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" The rest of the songs -- aside from that pretty decent roots track -- are pretty mediocre and the production on this is just awkward.

Probably better than Dinosaur Sounds, but..eh.
