Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Through its storied history, melodic hardcore has certainly had its ups and downs. Arguably, it was the youth-crew groups that got the ball rolling, but possibly a more direct influence was derived from the poppy take that bands like the Descendents, ALL, Down by Law and many others chose.

Regardless, almost all bands that get categorized under the giant hardcore umbrella suffer the same fate...early termination. Be it lack of motivation, the burden of touring or just simply “growing out of that phase,” the likelihood of a hardcore band lasting more than a few years is almost unheard of. But those that stand the test of time become legends in their own right…

A new Good Riddance album is an event. You always kinda expect it to happen, but don’t really get excited until you know it's happening. The added bonus this time around was the curiosity created by the amazing side-project of front-man Russ Rankin, the hardcore all-star-o-rama, Only Crime. This offshoot went in the direction many long-time GR fans had hoped for, the harder edge, but maintained the smooth vocals Russ has practically perfected. You see, for those unfamiliar, over the past 2 albums GR has leaned in a distinctly more melodic direction. And obviously this will generate a mixed reaction. So what about the new album?

Well, it’s not Only Crime, that’s another band. What you get with My Republic is the Good Riddance sampler platter: some harder, some melodic and some in between. The opening track, “Out of Mind,” is the best song Bad Religion never wrote, with the exception of Russ’ distinctive vocals. The looping riffs during the chorus sound like something off Generator or Against the Grain, and the entire thing rolls at a circle-pit pace. But of course, the trademark GR bridge with Rankin’s classic sneering reminds you of where you are.

Next, we find a problem that so bands’ albums have succumbed to. You have one of the album’s most boring tracks right after the best one? I’m rocking the fuck out, and suddenly it all comes to a screeching halt with the snoozer, “Texas” (see also: “Regret” followed by “Boise”). I mean, this isn’t a horrific track by any means, in fact, if more strategically placed; I may have enjoyed it. But the crawling pace, with partially cliché’ lyrics in the chorus, just flat out bore me. Luckily, we’re back in business on the next one, “Shame,” which for some reason gives me a weird Descendents vibe.

And thus seems to be the constant theme of the album -- pick me up with some great stuff, and then let me down with some “eh” material. Musically and lyrically (for the most part), this is some of the best music Good Riddance has ever done. Unfortunately, it’s the delivery that stumbles. Russ’s vocals just seem to be lacking that punch they’ve always had. Even in the truest melodic presentation, you’d eventually hear that bite that you’d always knew existed. And maybe his increased harmony over the past few years has made the edginess in his sound more distinctive, and effective. “Torches and Tragedies” is the perfect example of what we have come to expect. The quick and aurally pleasing sound, with hints of contained ferocity, which always seemed ready to at explode any moment.

So, is it good? Yes. By no means is My Republic a bad album, in fact, I could see it squeezing into my top 20 of the year. But it’s such a mixture of sounds that an avid fan such as me can easily be thrown off. Like I said, the sampler. The wings and chicken tenders will be gone immediately, but I’ll pick around the other stuff and maybe find something OK.

    My Score:

i really love this album. Ive never really been into good riddance much except for the song "one for the braves". But after listning to this album it is really good skate punk. Does sound more poppier than there older albums as i am now listning to them but i like my skate punk on the poppy side. Good Cd

I like this record. Don't fool yourself though and set high expectations before you listen to it. I am not saying it's bad but if you're a GR fan you will notice a difference (as all bands do) but over time you will find what you were looking for. A little more poppy but just get over it and let yourself like it. I feel most GR fans will like this release, as do I, because you will soon find the GR you heard in prior releases. Get the record, listen to it a few times over and soon you will see that it kicks ass depsite the less-than-aggresive vocals you're familiar with from GR. Get this release and don't forget that when you do buy it the money goes to a good group with respectable ethics and message.

Good Riddance makes great songs, but not great albums.

I disagree somewhat. I think A Comprehensive Guide to Moderne Rebellion is a rock solid album, and I know a lot of people that feel the same.

Yes, and that makes me sad...

    Big_Guy:
It just didn't sound characteristic to me, after 4 GREAT songs the rest of the album was by-the-formula pop-punk that sounded like it could be any band or kind of awkward ideas like the talking on "Dubious Glow" or the way "The Process" sounded like it could have been on "Stranger Than Fiction"... I listened to it last night and it's not nearly as bad now that I don't expect it to be another "Symptoms", though.

why did Bound By Ties Of Blood And Affection dissapoint everybody?

I like that one probably third or fourth best. in my opinion, it's better than this one

I like it. Especially "darkest days". I don't know why everyone is creaming themselves over the first track. Mmm, yeah.

    spot on review.

Posted by dazed on 2006-07-01 00:55:12

"Bound By Ties" disappointed the hell out of me, though, I've only heard 3 or 4 songs off this one and it already sounds waaaaay better than that one.

Posted by dazed on 2006-07-01 00:54:22

"Shame" gives me more of a midtempo NOFX vibe, even Russ's vocals.

"Symptoms" is the only album where they really combined their skatepunk and hardcore sides on most of the songs rather than having songs that can be quickly classified and separated. What I've heard of this makes me think this is the 'new' GR's (they have changed significantly) "Ballads", a few great songs that really combine the melodic and hardcore but everything else more solid than amazing and either melodic or hardcore.

    My Score:

Good review, although i'd only give it 3 stars. While it's welcoming to hear some decent melodic hardcore, I feel this album is weaker than Bound by Ties, that album just hits hard, plain and simple. I find that this album has more songs like "Boxing Day" from the previous album, which I enjoyed at first but found the harder tracks simply had more effect than the poppier numbers. Bound... had some epic songs this just seems to be pleasing to the ear, but nothing special.

Propagandhi. Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes and Potemkin City Limits were much harder (and lyriclaly scathing) musically than the first two albums. And those guys are headed towards theirs 40s.

Does 'Shame' sounds exactly like 'Sedated' by Only Crime. I got the feeling that more songs of Only Crime sound like songs by GR.

People have to let this one sink in... that's always been one of the best traits of Good Riddance's songwriiting - the melodies burrow w/ repeated listens until the whole thing becomes very familiar. I'm not sure how anyone could be disappointed with Republic after their prior one - this one has so much more energy and personality.

    My Score:

good riddance has never really impressed me *ducks rock* no wait! wait! *ducks rock*

    just hold on!

I love most of the FAT bands from the mid 90's...good riddance just seemed to stand out the least. political, but not as scathing or itelligent as propaghandi...cool melodic punk riffs...but not nearly as intricate or energetic as lagwagon or strung out....decent vocals, but not as endearing as lagwagons or no use for a name....fun, but not as fun as nofx...they always just seemed middle of the road to me.

that said, after hearing this, it sounds as strong if not stronger than any GR album i've ever heard, and I think i've heard them all other than the last one...they've had 7 albums right? and an ep? whatever their second album was, the one from 1996 or 1997 was my favorite...ya know the one with the family on the cover with the long title?

i like the new Rise Against

i didn't think SSCC was as bad as so many people say but the new one is definitely an improvement

pre-ordered it with an Amazon gift certificate i had

i agree with dante, the only crime album was way poppier than anyone really seems to want to admit. i kept hearing that they were going to use some song bill had written for black flag back in the day that were never used and then to me anyway, the album sounded like a poppy version of good riddance.

this album might take a little while to grow on me, the couple of times i've listened to it, its been background noise while i was working, i'll have to take it in the car or something to give it a better listen

So am I the only one who thought this was disappointing / WAY poppy for the band?

    I second that.

I mean, I didn't think their last effort Bound By Ties Of Blood And Affection was a disappointing record. Just a record that didn't follow-up too great from their previous one Symptoms Of A Leveling Spirit. However, I wouldn't have called it a disappointment.

My Republic, though, sounds too cookie-cutter for me. Now this album's a disappointment.
