Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

What do you think of when you hear about a band on Victory Records? What do you think of a band with a name like Nights Like These? Your first guess is probably that they're a cookie cutter emo band. If not, maybe a metalcore band trying to ride in on the success of label-mates Atreyu.

The band in question is indeed on Victory Records. They're called Nights Like These. And they don't share anything with Atreyu or the emo genre, but rather steal a note or two from Between the Buried and Me.

Nights Like These may officially be the best band that will never get a chance because of their label, which is a crying shame. The Faithless may easily be one of the heaviest albums released in a while, with loads of bone-crushing riffs, distortion, and pure intensity. Nights Like These just hammer away with a relentless attack full of fury and don't even consider slowing down. There's no sing-along choruses here, just straight-up metal.

"Scavenger's Daughter" is the perfect song to sum up The Faithless. It is a relentless attack of technicality and its chaotic onslaught sounds similar to what Between the Buried and Me would sound like if they slowed it down just a notch and filled their songs with more breakdowns. Even some of the guitar riffs could have been easily stolen from "Autodidact" if you compare the songs. As for vocals, Billy Bottom could easily be Guy Kozowyk's long lost brother, as each share a similar deep-throated and relentless shout and vocal approach.

The Faithless isn't another cookie cutter, polished and completely disposable record. It's easily the best album this entire year so far. Full of relentless fury, chaotic riffs, feriocous speed, technicality, and a refreshing feel, The Faithless is the next album you have to hear.

    My Score:

funny story, I saw this band play at a Christian club (yes a christian club) and a guy who ran the place came up halfway through their set and started talking about Christianity for a minute. When he handed the mic back, they went straight into "Bury the Messenger" which I'm sure you can guess what that song is about.

This album is brutal, one of the best metal albums to come out in 2006.

This band is so fucking sick live. Brutal.

Sweet. Another Victory band that sounds like they are shitting out bowling pins sideways. Just what this world needed!

these guys aren't really like BTBAM
if you took BTBAM and took away all the talent, epicness and awesomeness then they might sort of sound like them
    but not really at all

say cookie-cutter again, itll get your point a cross better!

'Nights Like These may officially be the best band that will never get a chance because of their label"

Dude, people actually buy stuff that comes out on Victory. Sure, most of the sales will be to 13 year olds, but they're going to sell more on Victory, and be heard by more people, than if they were on a more respected label.

Whoever said this sounds like old victory bands must have never heard any of those bands. Integrity and earth crisis and most of those bands had more of a slayer style and there wasnt a breakdown every 10 seconds. The only thing that this band has in common with bands like that is they all play metal.

Posted by steveman on 2006-07-15 22:51:43

Ok so the only band you can compare them to is BTBAM...who they rip of rediculously.

and you said relentless assault twice with like two sentences in between.

What is the point of a break-down? How does it augment a song? Fuckin' boring if you ask me. Converge was the only band that could ever do it right.

    My Score:

    This is pretty meh-tastic.

OK. You had me interested in this album (after, yes, brushing it off because I assumed it was another stupid victory band) but then I lost any sort of curiosity when you said

"It is a relentless attack of technicality and its chaotic onslaught sounds similar to what Between the Buried and Me would sound like if they slowed it down just a notch and filled their songs with more breakdowns."

I like BTBAM....but slower with more break downs? No thanks.

Nights like these tear me apart.

I'd probably just go ahead and resign from listening to music, personally.

If someone changed a rating i'd given an album I would be very annoyed. It kinda suggests they believe you're wrong and invalidates what you wrote. Furthermore, if it was me I'd resign as a point of principle, integrity still intact.

I forgot to log in. But yeah, Crazy Toledo-You suck.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 1:24 PM (EDT)

Crazy Toledo-I hate you. Stop writing. On another note, who got the new Dead to Me? It's fucking great.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-07-14 12:14:12

I don't really care but I'm pretty sure I know who and why. Whatever though, it's not that big of a deal.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 12:03 PM (EDT)

So who changed the score to 4 stars then, and secondly, why would they do that?

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-07-14 11:41:07

Well considering the score I originially give it was, well higher...

That little 'change' might cause some problems.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 11:19 AM (EDT)

best album of the year and it only gets 4 stars? wtf? this shit sucks.

    Posted by feeeding5000 on 2006-07-14 11:08:27

I don't like your taste in music. You write worse than I do.

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-07-14 10:38:16

I have only heard Scavenger's Daughter and that was pretty good so I might pick up the cd....but how can you say this is the best of the year...when you gave fuckin Atreyu 4 and a half stars...now I know these guys are better than Atreyu...no doubt...but how can you give this a lower score and say best of the year...score is for atreyu and crazytoledo's reviews....

You know, I'd go ahead and say something, but I guess I won't.

super inventive stuff is boring??? okay... let's just rehash the same thing over and over and over. wait... thats boring.

since you didnt bother to include any actual content in your post, ill do my best to put some in my reubttal.

a lot of the bands that are classified as "indie" today are characterized as being inventive. but the music itself is boring. go see it live and its a bunch of people standing around on stage, doing their best mannequin impression. and judging by how the music sounds, ic ant blame them. ive madea few albums with xylopone & bass as the only instruments, inventiveas fuck...
but if the music doesnt make you move, no matter how inventive it is, does it really matter?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 2:15 AM (EDT)

from the couple songs in the e-card they have... i can definitely tell you that this is by far NOT the best album of the year so far. not even close. while its better than probably anything else victory puts out anymore... its just not very good or creative. sure there is crazy guitar parts but the majority of it is boring rehashed breakdown parts. im so siiiiiiiiiiick of chug... chug chug chug chug.... chug chug chug parts. do something new.

    My Score:

regardless of the fact htat its crazytoledo reviewing it, this is old school victory-style, back when that word actually meant something.
    think earth crisis/damnation a.d.?
is it the most inventive shit in the world? i suppose not.
then again, imo, all that super inventive shit is boring as hell. if you bought victory style II, and still enjoy it now, youll like this.
