When Lollapalooza was announced last year as a one-city, weekend festival, I was excited to find that Chicago was getting something of this caliber…then they announced the lineup. Needless to say, I was a little disappointed at the small amount of bands I wanted to see there with the high price tag that also comes with a festival of this caliber. This year’s Lollapalooza arrived with almost identical feelings. There were a handful of bands there I was interested in seeing over the course of the weekend, but nothing I’d be willing drop $150 on for a three-day pass, or even $60 for one.

Through an awesome opportunity provided to me, I wound up at the festival free of charge. To begin my actual review, I just want to note that there wasn’t any one day I stayed for the headliners (due to lack of interest), so if you’re looking for reviews on Death Cab, Kanye, or Chili Peppers, you won’t find them here. There were nine stages total, if my count was correct, including a comedy/performance stage and the kids stage, so I’m simply reviewing what I happened to catch at different points throughout the weekend.

Day 1
There wasn’t a lot in terms of music I wanted to see on Friday, so I went downtown to check out the grounds and get a good feel for the festival. Friday was by far “the slow day” in terms of crowds, and I was already starting to think that the portion of Grant Park they were using might not be big enough for this festival. Certain bottleneck points meant major slowdowns, and if you were seeing a band on one side, and wanted to see one on the other, you needed to plan for a 10-15 minute trip around the park. The odd thing about the setup for the fest is that generally the two main stages (on opposite ends) played at the same time, and then all the secondary stages played in between. I believe they did this because of the way stages were organized, so that sounds weren’t overlapping. However, this meant that many times, two of the big name bands were playing at the same time, which created problems traveling from one side to the other and catching what you wanted to.

The comedy stage offered some Second City performances, as well as a group called Mission: Improvable, which wasn’t very exciting when I caught them. Another comedy group called Schadenfreude was hit and miss. Either way, this was the place to go when you wanted to sit, relax, and get some shade. Virgin Megastore offered signings with select bands, PlayStation offered video game relief, and a number of overpriced food and beverage distributors were located on each end. Companies offered giveaways to gain attention for themselves, while the Causapalooza area offered information on different things the festival people are pushing for, such as petitions regarding oil and pollution.

The artwork at the festival was actually really cool. One part was sectioned off, and included walls lined with artwork on these vinyl-y mesh canvas things. On Friday, there was also a car in this area stripped down to the metal. On Saturday artists started painting the car, and by Sunday, it was finished. There were also a number of human-like figures and bugs made from household items, such as door handles and remote controls.

Day 2
Day 2 was much more about the music. I went with some interest in seeing both Gnarls Barkley and Common, but walked away a little disappointed with both. I actually hadn’t heard GB before, and I guess I was expecting a little more of the DangerDoom style, and when I learned it was more gospel, it was a little too laid back from what I was expecting. A friend had told me about Common -- basically being a rapper with a real band backing him up, something that sounded very cool, but again, it just wasn’t enough to excite me. Instead, on another recommendation, I headed over to the PlayStation stage to check out Mike Patton’s Peeping Tom. His set was very entertaining, and while I can’t seem to remember the guy’s name, he has another man in the band that does beat-boxing for him, and he was amazing. He did a solo section, where once you realized he was doing the deep bass parts, talking while he was doing beats and so much more, you really realized how talented he is. And as odd as their frontwoman is, the Dresden Dolls were a good band to catch for 4 songs. An “indecent exposure” moment came when she tried to slip into a t-shirt while dropping her dress at the same time. I also caught a few songs by the Smoking Popes, and was impressed with them. Sonic Youth also played on the other end, and while I only caught the last two songs of their set, they weren’t playing very well.

Day 3
Compared to Saturday, Sunday was the “rock day” of the festival. The first band I really made it there for Sunday was probably the best. Reverend Horton Heat was was playing the smaller PlayStation stage to a very good crowd. Their rockabilly set was accented by a Johnny Cash cover that had everyone singing along. I previously caught just a bit of Matisyahu, which was pretty damn good as far as Jewish rap goes. On another recommendation, I checked out She Wants Revenge while waiting for Queens of the Stone Age, but their set was the worst thing I saw all weekend. QOTSA on the other hand, put on a great show, although the extended guitar solo in “No One Knows,” while entertaining, wasn’t nearly as good as the simpler, studio version. Wilco was obviously a bit more laid back, but also very entertaining in the final 10 minutes of the set I caught. Before taking off, I stayed in the same place to see Blues Traveler on the stage across from Wilco. It was your usual jam band set, where the songs could be good, but just never end.

Conclusion
Overall, Lollapalooza’s setup/artwork/experience was all very cool to be a part of, but for the price, the music left much to be desired for all except the trendiest of new music fans. The big draws weren’t as big as they could have been, and the support was lacking except for a few of the previously mentioned standout bands such as Peeping Tom and Reverend Horton Heat.

    Jeez this forum is vicious. GIve the guy a break. Y'know it's lucky that there's even a review of Lollapalooza on this website. To be honest I wouldn't be caught dead at that festival with that appauling lineup. The whole notion of putting rap and hip hop artists and dance groups on the same stage as rock, metal and punk acts is terrible I think. Music festivals are better when they stick to certain styles I find.

    Just my opinion, so don't go jumping down my throat like it's world war 3. Anyone who listens to Gnarls Barkley is an idiot, they're a fucking appauling band or group whatever you call them. Just an excuse to milk more money out of stupid idiots who buy there music.

    Anyway going back to the review, if I was at that festival I'd probably give much the same review, y'know it seems surprising that so many of you went to this festival and liked it that then none of you wrote a review and sent it in yourselves.

    And that's just the longer-running bands.

    This festival had so many good bands, all in one place on one weekend. All you did was write about some of the shittiest ones, and then wrote off the whole thing.

    As nivek82 mentioned, Sonic Youth sounded like shit. I only saw the end of their set though, so I didn't feel qualified to make comment upon it.

    Just to clear up the last comment as well, I'm sorry you feel that way, but a panel of judges actually felt that I did deserve to go based on the criteria for the contest which I entered, so fuck yourself. As far as being fired, do you have any fucking clue as to how Punknews works? I don't work here, I contribute. I contributed this shitty review because no one else had anything to say about the best. Even if I were staff at Punknews, I still wouldn't be getting paid. If you were there and no that much more, write a fucking review. If your review was better than mine (which I'm sure it would have been), they would have posted it. That's a lesson in how Punknews operates.

    Again, this is an awful review, and anyone that has said so is justified. For that I apologize, but if my taste in music doesn't coincide with yours, I can't help that. I feel I did see some of the better bands there, for examples Reverend Horton Heat and Peeping Tom, who were both great. I'm sure I also missed some really cool stuff too, but I can't really correct that at this point and this is the last I'm going to say about this review.

    I'm not an emo kid and I don't hate life. I enjoyed some parts of the festival, some of the things you mentioned I saw and was let down by, others, like QOTSA were good. I'm not "anti-" anything, like someone else mentioned either. Usually, anything I write, all the elitist punknews kids are coming out to tell me how much those bands suck (e.g. Flogging Molly, Reel Big Fish). Now that I write that I wasn't interested in a specific festival that much, it's ME that's all of a sudden"anti" and "an emo kid that hates life"?

    the reviewer sounds like some poser emo kid who hates life. i dont know how long the sets of each band are but Id pay 30 easily just to see QOTSA, just to see Kinney, just to see Chili Peppers, plus to throw in all the other bands each day. Ryan Adams alright, Built to Spill is really good worth another 20, Id be interested in Patton, and Gnarls Barkley, Horton Heat, Violent Femms, and thats just like a quarter of the big acts. I wasn't at lollapolooza but I know most of the acts i just listed ussually put on amazing shows and I couldn't believe any night would be terrible or not worth the money, from the artist line up this sounded like the fest of the summer and even if most of the bands were a let done im sure it would still be worth the 60 dollar price tag a day.     Okay, in response to all the negative shit on here, yes this was a very shitty review. It wasn't written in much time and without much effort. In retrospect, I should never have written it, but I saw that no one had posted anything on the event, so I figured I'd throw up my general feelings about it. Of course, once I did that, everyone finally had something to say. Again, the review was shitty. I'll admit that. To the person who said I could do better, he was right and I apologize.

    I'm sorry if I "offended" someone with my "terrible taste," but someone had the audacity to tell me to get over myself after a comment like this reviewer "is an asshole, and is offending me with his terrible taste.

    I've heard Sleater-Kinney is amazing, but I honestly don't know that much about the band, and I've never gotten into them. That's not to say they aren't good; I just don't know, and I'm not about to fake it to appease the message boards. I'm simply unfamiliar with a band that apparently it's not acceptable to be unfamiliar with.

    Kirby, I'm just not into the music of Kanye or Death Cab. Possibly you misread, but I did have a lot of interest in Common and Gnarls Barkley, but I was just a bit let down. When standing back in crowd of thousands they just weren't that exciting to me.

    My point at the beginning of this was not that I was going to "get a feel" for the whole festival. I won tickets for a contest I entered, and went to check it out. Most of what was there was not my style of music. I didn't go miserable, but I went to hang out and see what I ran into.

    As far as pictures go, I didn't have a photo pass for bands, but just wanted to get some pictures of the grounds. The spit was just something when I was fucking around waiting for the train back. I took them for myself but figured I'd let everyone in on them, sorry you didn't like them.

    I guess all I have to say was that no, this wasn't really a good review, but I wasn't trying that hard either. What it came down to was no one else had posted anything, so I thought I'd share something. I'm sorry it did not meet your high standards.

    Actually, not necessarily, the slot that devo played was a rotating slot, in florida we got rage against the machine, instead, some people got cheap trick, some got steve earle...

    I also don't think that it was the best lolla, sure rancid and the ramones played great sets, however this was "load' era Metallica where they started to go softer and 'down on the upside' era soundgarden, which wasn't bad, but for those of us who had seen soundgarden during the badmotorfinger days, it was just weak!

    Hate to be a dick, but why is this review even on Punknews? Ok... I can see the Sleater-Kinney connection, and the Smoking Popes, but most of the other bands that would even play this kind of festival are not related to punk rock in ANY way. Waste of bandwidth, save it for another site.

Seriously, if punknews.org would like to keep up their rep as a decent review site, they should probably send people to shows who will write something worth reading. That was the worst article I've ever read, "so if you’re looking for reviews on Death Cab, Kanye, or Chili Peppers, you won’t find them here". Thanks man, actually isn't that the reason people would read your review in the first place? Get over yourself, you're not saving music by being anti. Grow up, stop writing, join your angry friends in a session of "why we hate the world" and move on with your life. Most of all, next time you write, write with the audience in mind, not yourself.

    I don't understand this review. It's like this guy didn't even want to go to the show, skipped out on seeing any new bands that he hadn't heard before (which seems like most bands on the billing), than proceeded to give the show a bad review.

    Maybe next I can write a review of standing in line at the warped tour. Not the actual show, just standing in line to get in. I'd probably give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

    Day 1 was the slow day? Day 1 was the only day worth that actual price.
    I have to say you didn't see a single good band, and the ones that you did see are simply relayed to us with "it was bad" or "it was horrible."

    Good job wasting an incredible opportunity to see a ton of great bands.

    If you want a good live hip-hop band, Common is not the way to go (and I like the guy.)

    The Roots is where it's at. Nothing compares to The Roots' live shows.

    this is one of the worst reviews ive ever read... the thing thats most upsetting is the expection that ceelo green would sound like mf doom just because theyve had the same production...

    if you listent o older outkast albums and hear a lifting male alto/soprano, its generally cee-lo, and his own group, goodie mob, has been pretty successful in their own right.

    i worked security all weekend at this, and i can safely tell you that this review is worthless. he says that friday was a slow day. hmm, let's look at the bands that played on friday:

    sleater-kinney
    death cab for cutie
    my morning jacket
    cursive
    iron and wine
    ryan adams
    mates of state

    anyone who considers that slow is a fucking idiot. the rest of the fest obviously had some bad parts, but was much better than this reviewer makes it sound.
