Street Dogs - State of Grace

Being signed to Pete Wentz’s record label isn’t an easy detail to shake (unless of course you are Lifetime); in fact that information alone will write the Hush Sound off for many people. Unfortunately, for those that are willing to look past label affiliation there still isn’t much to see. The Hush Sound are essentially a piano driven pop-rock act with very, and I mean very, loose indie ties. What is even more disappointing is the fact that much of the band’s kitschy piano bounce could be completely interchangeable with labelmates Panic! at the Disco if it weren’t for the fact that the Hush Sound have both male and female vocals. Songs like “Lions Roar” and “Wine Red” settle into the same cabaret aesthetic as the boys from Vegas and singer Bob Morris’s voice even seems to come from the same over-the-top pop-punk vocal school as Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump who, incidentally, co-produced Like Vines and appears on the song “Don’t Wake Me Up.”

Like the bands I’ve already mentioned, the Hush Sound are slick and catchy. The production is pristine and the melodies are predictable. There is nothing abrasive or outright offensive about the band’s sound, and even with the added presence of piano the final product is generic and easily swallowed. “Out Through the Curtain” stands out thanks to its Pale Pacific-like songwriting and more mature tone, while the rest of the album is content to sway back and forth between mindless pop and overly sentimental balladry.

Like Vines is the type of album that merely drifts by with no moments too striking, and no temptation to press play again once it has stopped. After one spin, you realize the Hush Sound are like the beauty pageant contestant that is dressed just right, but has nothing to say.

"i'm not down with hearing about some basket case talk about phone sex."

I just want to get it out in the open that "Wow, I can get sexual, too" by say anything sounds absolutely nothing like the rest of their album, which is easily some of the best sound to come out of this decade.

sounds like dude is trying to get laid.

what people consider is kind of irrelevent. Of course we're not going to agree on everything, and what good pop punk is. who cares?

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 8:05 PM (EDT)

both Jawbreaker and Green Day are great. so stop being stupid.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 5:23 PM (EDT)

Well i diasgree that dookie through nimrod are great albums. I consider great pop punk to be jawbreaker, green day is no jawbreaker. Which is why we'll never see eye to eye on green day.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-10 15:25:18

    1) Green Day has never made a terrible record. Stop being reactionary.

2)Green Day was one of the bands that made that a stereotypical thing to do. They were the first real punk band (if you count Nirvana as more grunge) to break on a major label. And Dookie through Nimrod is all brilliant pop-punk, regardless of label.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 1:20 PM (EDT)

Well when you can show me what they did besides be a typical west coast punk rock band that got big, and started making terrible records then i'm all ears.

Posted by RyanRockwell on 2006-09-10 09:56:08

I like Green Day, although i'm not the biggest fan, but i'll go ahead and say your wrong that they didn't accomplish alot and pave the way for alot of things, because they did. kthnx

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-10 09:25:10

Four years younger, but you're right, age doesn't mean anything. I was just pointing out that anyone any younger than me, probably wouldn't remember when Green Day broke that well.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 2:44 AM (EDT)

I don't remember saying the hush sound was great. They're friends of mine and i was defending their sound above anything else in the comparison of the current fueled by ramen roster. And, the hush sound is definitly better than Say anything, given the fact that i am 20; i don't understand why you'd assume i'm not because i'm not down with hearing about some basket case talk about phone sex. Speaking of basket case, green day is total mediocre tripe, i'd listen to the hush sound over that band any day of the week. People need to stop acting like green day did some serious road paving for punk rock and all independant music. And my age shouldn't enter into this at all, but i'd bet i'm older than you. So don't get into a battle of taste with me, when i'm sure op ivy still turns your world upside down.

Posted by RyanRockwell on 2006-09-09 22:24:26

    P.S.

I also don't think this album bears any resemblence to any of the normal fueled by ramen fallout boy, acadmy is, panic at the disco sound. It's definetly not entirely original, but I don't think it comes close to treading those waters. And I still like it.

    My Score:

Ok so I downloaded this expecting badness... and I like it quite a bit. I'm not sure what that means, but I enjoy this album.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-09 17:13:34

So, you think the Hush Sound is great, but not Green Day or Say Anything. Yeah, I'm willing to bet you're not even 20 yet.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 4:13 PM (EDT)

    p.s.

i've just realized how pointless it is to argue with someone who likes Green Day and Say anything.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 4:11 PM (EDT)

No, i remember the days you're talking about; and cared for not a one of those mediocre bands that are as mediocre as the FBR pop punk bands are now. Except the impossibles, they had a song or two i enjoyed. Vagrant was were it was at in those times.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-09 13:44:55

Why is it that all the anonymous posters that want to take anyone down a peg contradict themselves in the same sentence? How can I be 13, AND talk about how good FBR used to be?
And they used to be good! If you think they used to suck, well, maybe you have different taste, but there was a time where you'd check their website, and the only bands you'd read about were The Stereo, The Impossibles, Less Than Jake, The Pietasters, Blueline Medic and Cadillad Blindside. Not a bad one in the bunch.
Do you remember those days, or can you just remember a year ago when FBR didn't suck quite as much and you think that's what I'm talking about?

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 1:26 PM (EDT)

Wake up boss, FBR has been synonomous with bad since it's inception in the 90's. That label never had any credibility, nor will it ever. This is nothing new. Every shitty label has a small handfull of bands that are in fact good, you pointing that out is meaningless when the majority of the label is still hell. You are 13.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-09 01:56:54

So is Blueline Medic, I think, but they actually do suck now a lot. How a band can fall that far is beyond me.

Posted by SalsaShark on 2006-09-09 01:34:30

Kane Hodder is still on Fueled By Ramen. I don't care what anyone says, I still love them.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-09 01:27:37

Actually, I wasn't implying that the two of you were referring to the old FBR catalogue. I was pointing out the error in calling one genre of bands the FBR sound.
Also, you can't call someone a hipster for liking the bands I listed.
Also, you can't call someone a hipster as an insult, and then try to be a bigger hipster.
Also, I do not think that word means what you think it means.
Also, stop trying to one up me. J Church has been on a lot of labels, and FBR definitely was one of them.

Pretty much, I take any chance I get to mourn the loss of the good FBR. I hate seeing that label name used as synonomous with bad, like you were doing. That was the intention of my post.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 12:44 AM (EDT)

Cool, because the reviewer and myself were obviously talking about FBR's back catalouge; you hipster snob. Not to mention that the majority of those bands suck just as much as the new ones do now. Wasn't J church on vagrant anyway? Wake up, fool.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-09-08 20:55:50

"You've pigeon-holed them yourself for being a fueled by ramen band"

Oh, so they sound like Blueline Medic, The Hippos, J Church, Slowreader and The Stereo?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 8, 2006 at 2:37 PM (EDT)

i dont agree wiht this review at all. this is one of the better records ive heard all year

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 8, 2006 at 2:19 PM (EDT)

the couple of songs i heard reminded me of ben folds. and his songs are always hit or miss with me. so this could be good. not great, not bad. but good.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 8, 2006 at 12:55 PM (EDT)

What a stupid review. You've pigeon-holed them yourself for being a fueled by ramen band. I hear more similarities to sufjan stevens, the anniversary, and mates of state then i do any flavor of the month pop punk band. This just reminds me of younger indie rock of the late 90's, a la vagrant records in it's hayday. Get over yourself, love this band.

Posted by dadudebob on 2006-09-08 11:27:58

they are one of my faves lately, i love the first one, these guys are so amazing, im sure theyll get betterin the future

    My Score:

This review doesn't read like a 2-star review. Whatever. I like this album and I think these kids have potential to be great.

Posted by dusticles on 2006-09-08 10:33:15

this band sucks. so does this record.

Posted by DickAround on 2006-09-08 04:29:48

    The reviewer is correct.

And I've never heard this band.
Ari Katz is going to sound like Pat Stump on the new Lifetime album, just watch (or listen).

    My Score:

This reviewer is an idiot. This is very well written music and these guys have talent, give them some credit.

obviously your a hater, but there are only a hand full of good songs. i bet you dont like anything on either of the labels
