In the chorus of the first song "New Eyes Open" on the Draft’s album, Chris Wollard shouts, “That’s what I like about it, it’s not so complicated.” While he might have been singing about things other than his musical pursuits, the same can be said about what makes their debut album, In a Million Pieces, such a great accomplishment.

The Draft is made up of three quarters of the recently defunct Hot Water Music. When Chuck Ragan left the band to pursue more time with his family and a new acoustic project, the remaining members -- bassist Jason Black, vocalist/guitarist Chris Wollard, and drummer George Rebelo -- decided they weren’t ready to slow down, appointed Todd Rockhill to join Wollard on guitar and started this project.

With 75 percent of the band carrying over from HWM, it’s obvious that the band had a real challenge in front of them as far as carving a new identity goes. While losing Ragan’s vocals have a noticeable effect, Black and Rebelo’s work as a rhythm section had an equally prominent role in their previous band.

Getting back to the whole issue of being less complicated, gone are the traded and sometimes overlapping vocals between two vocalists. In the Draft, Wollard handles the vocal duties entirely with minimal backup vocals being employed, with exceptions in a few songs including "All We Can Count On." The band’s music is also a lot less challenging, especially when compared to some of Hot Water Music’s earlier work. Most notably, there’s a clear sense of melody that gets through with the Draft that was rarely seen in Hot Water Music. Songs like "Out of Tune" sound like they were written by a completely different band. It’s plain to see that the guys in the Draft are making the music they want and are having a genuine good time in doing so. If there was ever a sense of worry that things might end with their old project, they’re gone now.

One of the drawbacks -- although perhaps highlights for some -- is a couple of the songs don’t exemplify the new identity the Draft has created for itself. The best example is "Lo Zee Rose," which sounds like it would have fit right in on Hot Water Music’s last album, The New What Next. Thankfully, the great majority of these songs don’t fall into that trap.

Had I been in the position that Wollard, Rebelo, and Black were in going into in the Draft, I would have been looking to appeal to long-time fans while giving people who were never really into us a chance to reconsider what we had to offer. The Draft have laregely accomplished that on In a Million Pieces, and there’s little doubt in my mind that they will further cement themselves as their own entity the next time around.

"New Eyes Open" is a great song. I agree with Jason--my favorite albums aren't the ones I listen to, they're the ones I LIVE with (I haven't heard this album but look forward to it)

I'm gonna try to convince my mates to come to the Troubadour this week. Will Chuck be joining you?

Well, I've listened to this album several times now, and it's pretty good. I never got into HWM, but I do have all their albums for collector's sake -- The Draft is much more accessible and will stay a part of my playlist for a while.

album of the yeaaaaaaaaar yeaaah! i've been disappointed in most albums released this year from my favorite bands (cursive, envy, planes mistaken for stars, owen, haram, the appleseed cast... and the list goes on), BUT THE DRAFT DIDN'T DISAPPOINT. really, a fucking miracle. so thank you.

I very often wonder--and this is in no way specific to this album or this band or even anything I've been involved with, for that matter--if people take this one very important point into consideration when passing opinions on new records--that they haven't lived with it yet.
By that I don't mean "give it a few listens," or "it's a grower," or anything like that. I mean that, at least for me, all of my favorite records have become part of my life somehow. I've experienced them in my car, on tour, when I was in a good mood, when I was in a bad mood...these records have been there for me....
    ...Peace,
    Black"

I totally, 100% agree with you on this. This is why, no matter what anyone says, The Greatest Story Ever Told is my favorite Lawrence Arms album, A Flight and a Crash is my favorite HWM album... This is also probably why The Loved Ones full length and the Dead to Me full length will probably end up as my favorite records of 2006.... Meanwhile, RX Bandits won't score nearly as high. This is also why Latterman's No Matter Where We Go was my favorite record of 2005. You kind of grow with some records. If it's a really special record, you'll keep listening to it, and just like, grow attached to it.

If I lost my copy of, say No Use's Hard Rock Bottom, (Yeah, I'm a later day No Use fan... dudes can pen some catchy tunes.) I'd be pretty bent out of shape. That record, with it's poppy gloss and insane catchiness literally lead me through life for a good half a year. Mean while, I wouldn't feel nearly as bad if I lost Keep Them Confused, which is a good record, probably about as catchy, same style for the most part, but I didn't live it.

Something strikes me about this record, and I think I'll still be spinning it a lot a year from now. However, time will tell if I truely grow "attached" to it.

I guess this is probably why some dudes like say, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy more than Dear You. Dear You is musically "better," but in the end, that's not everything.

    My Score:

The first song is brillant. After that the record never lives up to that standard and falls flat. People are convincing themselves that this record is great out of some ode to HWM. It's ok, but certainly not anything spectacular. With that said, i think the boys next album could make that leap.

    WRONG.

This is a very good cd. I've been a big hot water music fan but I wasn't going to like The Draft just for that reson alone. So after a couple listens its easy for me to say that this CD is great. Yea it has similarities to HWM but what do you expect. I think a job well done on giving this cd an individual sound and being to come up with a new idenity. Im glad these guys do what they do.

Dan, please check my initial post, which I've copied below:
I agree with Brendan. "Danperrone" is one negative son of a bitch, huh? Hey, bud, since these songs are "so rediculously simple," I'll give you $10 for each of my basslines you learn and/or transcibe and send to me, k?
    I'm kidding.

See where it says "I'm kidding?" I really was, man. I didn't mean to offend you by commenting on your opinion about our record anymore than you meant to offend us by offering up your opinion on our record in the first place. Also, note this later post:

Sorry you got so bent out of shape, Dan. It's pretty easy to do when people just start firing away at you from behind a computer, isn't it?

That said, I really do welcome criticism. However, I also feel that I have the right to respond to criticism I disagree with. Makes sense, right?

i had the good fortune to see HWM quite a bit early on, as we were all around the same age and made it to gainesville the same year. at first it was all about the feeling. the moment. the hardback and house shows. but then they grew, as we all do, and a few records down the line, they started writing SONGS. and they haven't stopped. thank god.

every record, starting with the demo tape and ending with the new what next, has been my favorite HMW record. without fail, they bested themselves with every release.

and i'm sure the guys don't want THE DRAFT to get lumped in with HWM again and again, but it's the same dudes, the same heart. and to my ears, they're coming at us from the same place.

this is my favorite THE DRAFT record.

wow major props to jason for talking to the fans and critics.

i guess this release just has the unfortunate consequence of being released in a year where a bunch of bands did stuff that is new, different, or intriguing. this record isn't bad, but to me, it's on par with strike anywhere. both are strong, but they can't hold my interest because i feel i heard strike anywhere (with all their prior records), and i've heard the draft (very new what next-ish)... and NWN is one of my favorite HWM records, but it's nothing daring or new.

    My Score:

I dunno, Jason. I came into HWM when they first started releasing records on Epitaph. Now way back then I thought "Jack of all Trades" and "Paper Thin" were two of the best songs I'd heard in a long time (still definitely two of my favorites from HWM), but when I started listening to the older records like No Division and Fuel... I sort of stopped listening to the new stuff a lot.

Now I don't know how much mob mentality goes into saying the older records are better, I think a lot of the time it is just "oh their first album was better." But still, there's something to be said for a sound versus a song. HWM got a lot better at writing music between Fuel and Caution but I think the reason Fuel will always be my favorite HWM album isn't the writing, but it's the experience and sound captured. Maturity and production quality are great and all but they don't necessarily mean anyone is going to like that music more.

That said, I do think the song construction on this album is a bit simpler (though the technical level of the playing is way beyond my favorite HWM stuff [although the bass has always been my favorite part of the band, and it's always been interesting and fresh, not just now]). Simple isn't bad though. Like Sickboi said before me, there's nothing wrong with "HWM plays straight-forward rock songs." The music still rocks, the hooks are still stuck in my head. I saw you guys live in Portland (alk3 trio, delicious waffles by the way) and it was amazing, especially since I never was able to go see HWM live since I grew up in the country.

But I still think the songs are a tad simple for my tastes. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy it and doesn't mean I'm not going to keep listening to this record constantly. The Draft is still young though, I can't wait to hear what you guys come up with next.

    Posted by ben_conoley on 2006-09-12 13:13:09

I often find I am favorable towards the first album I hear from a band. In the case of HWM, it's No Division. In the case of Alk 3, it's From Here to Infermary.

I think I do this because nothing can beat that feeling of hearing something new for the first time and having that sense of discovery. When another album comes along it can't beat that for initial feeling I get, although there are exceptions from time to time like between the first two Against Me! records.

Again, this is not necessarily targeted at the reviews up here of The Draft record, they just got me thinking about it. I've been hearing "It's not as good as blah blah blah from way back when" for a long time now, and so have tons of other bands. It's never fun, but it's something that undeniably comes with the territory. It's just strange to me that people are becoming so secure in their ability to fully critique, understand, and subsequently write off records in mere minutes that took months to make. Doesn't it ever occur to anyone that they like "Goddamnit" better than "Crimson" because they were 15 and making out--not 25 and going to work--the first time they heard it?

    My Score:

Simple southern punk rock music. If you don't get it, then you're trying to fit the Draft into Hot Water Music, and that ain't happening.

Does everything need to be crazy complicated and "intense"?

Posted by StormShadow on 2006-09-12 12:24:35
    My Score:

I got a promotional copy of this so I've been listening to it for a couple months. Honestly, I can't get enough. I love this CD. Just saw them in Iowa City and they were great: so tight, so intense.

That said, my perspective on this release is different than many other people's, since I never really listened to much Hot Water Music in the past. So I can understand why there are some unfavorable comparisons.

But if you can set aside Hot Water Music and accept the Draft for what it is, heavy, melodic punk rock that kills just about anything else out there today, than you shouldn't be disappointed.

    My Score:

When I saw "mellow overtones" I mean having a southern rock/folkish feel. It's hard to explain, but the song "Out Of Tune" is a perfect example. The organ really does it.

And I forgot a rating on the last post..woo!

This is a ridiculously huge step down from Epitaph-era HWM, which in itself was a step down from No Idea-era HWM. Pass.

I've been listening to this album for over a month now, but obviously i'll be buying it now that it's out.

This isn't a Hot Water Music record, and despite all the shit they get for it, I appluad them. They are writing insanely catchy songs that all have this mellow overtone. It's not an "intense" record, even the songs that are ballsy still have that relaxed feeling from the recording (courtesy of brian mcternan).

Songs like "Impossible", "The Tide Is Out" and "All We Can Count On" show the new style of strong writing for the band. Instead of the raw, crazy guitar leads, they hold back for the better. The term "Less is more" comes to mind. Chris' vocals are probably the best they've ever been. Instead of straining, he's found the perfect mix of straight singing and the crackled high notes that makes his voice distinct.

Listening to this from a musician's standpoint, this album made me rethink song structure. You don't have to have complicated arrangements to make a song sound like you. All you need is a strong overall song. And that's what The Draft pulls off. The bass lines do more than just follow the chords and if you listen there are some awesome lines. George's drumming isn't simple. Every once in a while he'll do something awesome that makes you rewind the song and try to air drum it (which I do...).

I listen to "In A Million Pieces" at least 2 times a day all the way through. Obsession? No. I'm just happy that i've found the type of music i've been looking for for a VERY long time.

I agree with Brendan. "Danperrone" is one negative son of a bitch, huh? Hey, bud, since these songs are "so rediculously simple," I'll give you $10 for each of my basslines you learn and/or transcibe and send to me, k?
    I'm kidding.
That said, thanks for the great, honest review and to everyone who has had something nice to say.

Is this available on iTunes yet?

If so, I'm downloading it when I go home for lunch.

sickboi, i think you think that the people that don't like this feel that way ONLY because it's not hwm

the songs here are so ridiculously simple, not very catchy, aren't hot water music songs, lack any intensity, and are pretty bland to boot

    obv i'm kidding about #3

i've ordered the lp from no idea without hearing a thing. now i've heard the demo and it sounds a lot like the new what next. that's the only thing i can say. surely it will be not like fuel for the hate game, but i guess it will be way better than the demo i've heard, and it could be a solid release.

Maybe it's because it's not what I wanted from ex-members of HWM or maybe it's because it bores me. I'm not even a HWM worshipper like most, this just...doesn't do it for me.

well good. i'm 23 and you're what, 28? i'm totally way ahead of the game.

i liked this when it first came out, then really liked it,then it got boring as the year has had some much, much, much better titles.

    Colin -

You sound like me 6 months ago. It isn't HWM, get over it. The kept some of the same basic rythmns, vocal stylings and similar arrangements, but its kind of a "back to basics" type band.

I'll bet dollars to pesos their next album blows people away. I'm actually glad this one is so subtle, it heightens my anticipation of what they will do next.

Posted by colin on 2006-09-12 01:34:05

I'm waiting for the bad part...

it's boring and easy? and i'd rather listen to hot water music except for a few tracks. it's just HWM light, plain, and a bit simpler. it's still better than a lot of the shit out there in pop punk, but it's certainly nothing with a whole bunch of staying power.

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2006-09-12 01:34:05

Justin, I'm totally telling Jason what you said when they play with the Larry Arms.
Then I'm giving him a knife and your picture...That way CSI will blame him when I shave you.
