Superdrag

I had really low expectations for this CD. I remembered hearing this band on the radio a couple years ago, when they had a hit with the song "sucked out". I liked that tune, but it was sort of annoying, and it sounded like the call of the one-hit wonder. Boy was I wrong. From beginning to end, this is a strong, enjoyable CD, perfect for long drives or as background noise while doing homework.

I would describe this bands sound as punk-pop/alt-rock. It's not your typical Queers and Screeching Weasel pop punk, nor is it mainstream "punk" like Blink-182 or SR-71. Superdrag draws a lot from indie rock, 80's punk like Husker Du and the Replacements, among other influences. They use all sorts of interesting instruments including sitars and theremin, adding depth to their already full-bodied musicality. They have a very easy going sound, and its very much their own. To top it off, the album was produced by Jerry Finn, who has worked with Green Day, Rancid, Blink-182, Fenix TX, Alkaline Trio, DHC, Millencolin, Sum 41, Zebrahead and the Suicide Machines.

The first half of this CD is stonger than the second half. "Im Expanding My Mind", "Hellbent", "Sold You an Alibi" and "Do the Vampire" are all solid rock songs, great for mixed tapes when you are looking for something to break the monotony between FAT bands. My only complaint is that the lyrics seem kind of vague at times. They aren't excessively weird, they just don't seem to say much of anything. Perhaps you can chalk that up to my own ignorance, so I can't fault the band for that. Besides, John Davis sings with such passion, that you can't help but enjoy this collecton of music thoroughly.

All in all, I would say that this is perfect "sunday afternoon" music, not something that gets you pumped up, but energetic and chaotic nonetheless. I recommend this CD to fans of: Husker Du, The Replacements, My Bloody Valentine, the Troggs and The Beatles.
