Even though they still had members in high school, Aiden managed to sign to mega-indie Victory Records and release the immensely popular Nightmare Anatomy. The album, which received a lot of criticism for the mundane musicianship and appalling lyrics, was nothing more than just another clichéd, generic release. After reissuing their full-length debut, Aiden is now back at it again with a new EP that is once again going to please fans; but will it do anything to prove the critics wrong?

The album once again starts off with WiL's lyrical fascination with burning his friends, as "The Suffering" opens up with the very chants of "burn your friends!" So right out of the gates it's obvious that there was no maturing lyrically, as lines like "we'll take me into your dark dream and scream so loud / this place fills with misery / suffer the kiss and take me out alive" are still abundant.

Musically, the album is as generic as it gets, with distorted guitar riffs mixed with tedious melodies that do nothing at all for the songs. "The Suffering" features downplayed guitars so it can showcase dull drumming and some simplistic bass lines. I know that with as many bands as there are today, originality isn't common, but bands can at least make an attempt to stay interesting, instead of lulling the listener to sleep. And while the singing is marginally improved, the lyrics are still so ghastly that it makes the album impossible to get completely through on one listen. While writing songs that steal equally from My Chemical Romance and AFI will appeal to the fanbase, it's simply not cutting it.

Rain in Hell features a decent amount of extras, including two inept covers of songs by Billy Idol and the Misfits. The EP also features three music videos, which will float your boat if you like guys wearing more make-up then your typical drama queen. The live footage is also another extra that will satisfy fans, but just make the rest of us shake our heads in utter disgust.

Rain in Hell may be a fan-friendly album, but it's still just another headache that should be ignored. Musically, it's as generic and boring as you're going to get and the lyrics are still as pathetic as ever. It's only fitting that Aiden entitled a song "The Suffering," as it sums up this release perfectly.

I mean, before that it was pretty much all rap and bad indie.

I always found Aiden really catchy, nothing memorable, just the melodies tend to stick into your brain. In any case, the score is for this site, and how much laughs I (and I'm sure others) get out of reading some of either...

A) the most retarded posts ever
B) the most insulting, snappiest comments on any site.

Really, it could bring a smile to anyone's face.

As for Victory. Best thing to ever come out of it was Streetlight Manifesto's "Everything Goes Numb".

I just can't see that under 100k is IMMENSELY popular, seeing as tony claims a million records sin't enough to recoup. And sure, hawthorne had shitloads of mtv2 spots and stuff, but come on, hasn't aiden?

Aiden really hasn't been on MTV2, maybe Fuse, but not MTV2, which ironically airs old reality shows that originially aired on MTV. I thought MTV2 was originally supposed to be "100% music."

this album is a masterpiece, I'd liek to see you write something better seriously wiL is an inspiration if you read about him and research on his life you will find he has been through a lot to come to where he is now. He does write maturely and he puts whe he believes the listener can relate to. It might not be suicide or burning friends, but the represent feelings and what he has experienced. In my opinion lyrically he hasn't failed with providing the audience with a wonderful range of songs. I congratulate wiL and all the band memebers on producing yet another wonderful album. I hope that you will understand where he is coming from, he has experienced homelessness, failure, addiction to drugs and alcohol and through all this he has still matured into what he is today and what his fans admire him for. wiL is an inspiration to all who truely admire what he has done.. thanks Aiden for 'Rain in Hell' I loved it! :D - Brad Dorrington, Australia.... CAN'T WAIT TO SEE AIDEN IN MELBOURNE 8TH OF DECEMBER!!! ... braddorrington69@hotmail.com

givemeamuseumandillfillit (November 3, 2006)

It was supposed to be 80k, not 180.
I'm not 100% sure about the exact number though as it was just randomly mentioned in some interview (suprisingly), but the Aiden number was ripped straight from ap.net's weekly postings.

I just can't see that under 100k is IMMENSELY popular, seeing as tony claims a million records sin't enough to recoup. And sure, hawthorne had shitloads of mtv2 spots and stuff, but come on, hasn't aiden?

And yes, 400k is alot for t&n, hell, 250k was huge for hopeless on avenged sevenfold, but they hasn't claimed that a platinum record isn't enough to recoup.

This isn't about the "independent scene", this is about Victory Records.

crazytoledo (November 2, 2006)

Also, as of late, the only albums to hit 100,000 for Victory are:

Hawthorne Heights The Silence In Black And White
Hawthorne Heights If Only You Were Lonely
Thursday Full Collapse
Taking Back Sunday Tell All Your Friends
Taking Back Sunday Where You Want to Be
Atreyu Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses
Atreyu The Curse
Atreyu A Death-Grip On Yesterday

Hell, the soundscan feature on Absolutepunk shows albums with over 700 sales that week and features Victory bands since it has had Spitalfield and Atreyu/Hawthorne Heights/etc.

The Black Maria didn't even crack it, On the Last Day sold 1,000 it's opening week, Bury Your Dead haven't fared much better and there hasn't been too much, if any success for the Forecast, the Sleeping, and the Junior Varsity.

crazytoledo (November 2, 2006)

under 100k is extremly low even for a victory artist (since 03-04). Most of the releases they actually work (in other words, not bands like the voodoo glow skulls) hit pretty high. Spitalfields last album was a "huge flop" and it sold 180k. And Aiden has had waaaaaaaaaaaaay more promotion than spitalfield

Are you serious dude? Either that numver was from an unreliable source or you're pulling numbers out of your ass as I know first hand that their last album hasn't sold even close to 180k. Hell, there current album hasn't even hit 5 numbers yet. And Underoath is considered mega-successful, but They're Only Chasing Safety has sold 400,000. So if 180k is a huge bust, then Underoath is only a marginal success?

I really think you should check out the soundscan numbers on Absolute Punk on a continous basis and you'll realize that 90,000 albums is a lot for the indepedent scene and that Spitalfield has never, ever sold that many albums. Even if you combine all of their albums.

Crazytoledo, do you really consider a record that has sold 96,039 units in more than a year to be "immensely popular"?

I'm talking about as an independent artist signed to Victory. Hawthorne Heights is a differt scenario as they've reached the radio and MTV, therefore there are higher expectations. But for smaller independent bands that don't even show up on MTV2, even 20,000 can be considered a success.

If Tony claims over a million records isn't enough for hawthorne heights to recoup, then aiden would be considered a major flop.

In regards to the cover. That cartoon character might be Milo. Not Descendents' Milo. There is a horror movie from 1998 called Milo. It is about a homicidal little boy in a rain-coat who terrorizes little girls. Anyway, they think that they kill him, but he comes back to haunt them when they grow up. It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I wouldn't recommend it as it wasn't even one of those flicks that's "so bad it's good". But the cartoon character looks just like the little boy in the movie.

A good album and EP nonetheless.

Anonymous (November 1, 2006)

The guy who did AFI's artwork on All Hallows. Black Sails and Art of Drowning was a man named Alan Forbes. And he is a pretty damn good artist. The Aiden cover looks almost anime inspired, I doubt he did this cover.

GreenVandal (November 1, 2006)

What the fuck is up with that cover art? "Lets have a little evil guy in his rain slicker marching through a cemetary and draw it in a artstyle that is so ugly it makes anyone who has ever doodled in a notebook while half asleep feel embaressed." Was their any effort put into this? Did that guy who does AFI's art do this? That would explain alot.

If anyone has noticed, I now judge bands solely by their cover art. It has been working out pretty good so far.

I like pitchfork's writing style, but they only like music based upon how "indie" it is. I do not really like indie rock. I happen to enjoy reviews that shit on bands that deserve it, not bands that are so bad that it's not worth trying. The whole point of my name is not to get credibility, but basically, I really like Crass. I have all of their albums, and I could probably recite the lyrics to every song on The Fedding of the 5000 by heart. I'm just enthusiastic, and angry.

Yes. Because it's crazytoledo. The guy has no problem giving bad Victory releases 4 or even 5 stars if he likes them. Say what you will about his taste, but he's probably one of the most honest reviewers on this site.
It's funny when people who don't know anything about the reviewers' musical taste, something you could easily find out, assume that every last one of them fits the definition of "Orgcore", when almost none of the reviewers actually do. Look at last year's top 20 lists if you want proof.

I listened to Nightmare Anatomy and thought that I had accidently downloaded a drunk Lagwagon recording. Flame on all you want, that's what I thought it sounded like. To me they sound like a bad version of Lagwagon (who I really don't care for in the first place), but they seem to think that they stand a chance at starring in the 5th (or is it 6th) Crow movie.

Urrrgh, I hate it when 'orgcore' reviewers try and review something that isn't 'orgcore'

You just made my day.

crazytoledo (October 31, 2006)

The extras aren't decent in my opinion, but I know fans will like. So for fans, maybe a higher score, but for non fans, the score works.

ben_conoley (October 31, 2006)

I would have said the exact same things if I had reviewed it - and I haven't heard the album yet. That's the problem with the Aiden.

All reviews are bias. That's the point. They're opinions.

This band sucks. Good review. One of these days I'll go log on my other comp so I'm not always anonymous. Sigh.

damnitsderek (October 31, 2006)

SloaneDaley (October 31, 2006)

those lyrics.....

GlassPipeMurder (October 31, 2006)

I'm gonna go buy this just to spite crazytoledo.

FatTony (October 31, 2006)

This band is fucking embarrassing. With so much great music coming out of Seattle, these guys are a blemish on the local scene.

damnitsderek (October 31, 2006)

This has to be the most biased shit I've ever read.

Score is for the review.

GlassPipeMurder (October 31, 2006)

This band gets more undeserved shit than any other besides maybe Leftover Crack. Yes, the goth thing is cheesy, but there are way worse bands. And that Die Romantic song is actually kinda catchy.

Cheesetits (October 31, 2006)

Biased reviews rock!

Dante3000 (October 31, 2006)

This is a gimmie review.
I could have reviewed this in my sleep.

even though crazytoledo is probably right, it doesn't seem like the smart move to run his review of it, because the punknews world already knows how much he hates this band
