Killswitch Engage emerged from the Massachusetts metalcore scene several years ago, releasing their exceptional self-titled album via Ferret Records. Afterwards, the band would go on to sign with Roadrunner Records and release the immensely popular, Alive or Just Breathing. However, after the release of their second LP, the band saw their vocalist leave the band. Filling in the void was Blood Has Been Shed vocalist Howard Jones, who delivered an almost identical shout, while improving the clean parts and allowing Killswitch to branch off into melodic areas that they couldn’t venture with their previous vocalist. Jones’ first album, The End of Heartache not only garnered around 400,000 sales, but was considered to be one of the best metalcore albums over the last few years and even received a Grammy nomination for the ballad title track.

Coming into As Daylight Dies, the biggest question was what the band would do with the tidal wave of success and publicity they’ve received since emerging at the forefront of the metalcore scene. While the band’s fourth LP isn’t a new venture, the album does see the guys progressing and redefining their chops even more.

The first single, “My Curse” is a good example of what to expect on the album, as the song manages to balance a mix of melodic guitar lines with southern-inspired riffing and features the traditional screamed verses and sung choruses. While the format has been done at least a million times, it’s still not a flaw here, as Jones easily has one of the scene’s best singing voices and the transition just feels natural with the music. The song also showcases one of the few changes on As Daylight Dies, as the southern metal-inspired riffs show up from time to time throughout the release. Songs like “Unbroken” and “This Is Absolution” pummel you with mosh-friendly breakdowns and metallic riffing, then in true Killswitch fashion, hit you in the face with sing-along choruses that are entirely catchy. “The Arms of Sorrow” has the best chance to follow up "The End of Heartache” as the big single, with the song’s melodic guitar lines just as abundant as Jones’ singing.

One of the best aspects of any Killswitch album is that not only are the songs excellent, but the production by guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz is so superior that every band playing this style of music would be better off if they enlisted him to produce their albums. The songs are also well-rounded off by Jones, who writes personal lyrics that are pretty notable compared to the typical fare normally featured in the genre.

While As Daylight Dies has a laundry list of positive aspects, it’s still not a perfect album and suffers from several flaws. It’s basically a recreation of The End of Heartache with some minor changes, yet not as strong. Additionally, it lacks any true standouts like the ones that graced Heartache. Another key problem here is that a majority of the songs sound the same, making the album become slightly tedious at some of its weaker moments.

While each of the problems here keep the album from being as good as it should have been, they still don’t derail it from being a commendable album worth your time.

Why do good bands have to go and become shit?
    Good instrumentation, in parts.
absolutely fucking hate how he has whingey emo-ish vocals in this album. Go back to the days of Alive or just Breathing, and The End of Heartache

Every killswitch album is so creative and different.

Dude, I'm a Killswitch fan and even I recognize that just about all of their albums sound the same. The only difference was between their second full length and "The End of Heartache."

They also happened to get a new vocalist for that album too.

Scene kids? You morons on here are all scene kids. Your a bunch of freakin' losers. Punk is lame. Get over it. Punk stopped being important in like 1983 loser.

Blah, I am actually a 'scene kid.' But yeah, punk isn't lame. When it comes down to the day and we're all stereotyping genres, I rather listen to slopp songs about how the government is fucked then screaming about satanic rituals. I do listen to both genres, but it pisses me off when people (not neccesarrily you) go out and stereotype a genre, then get all pissed when the favor is returned.

I don't know why punknews.org is reviewing a metal album in the first place. But news flash here: Jesse David Leach is the original singer, he now sings for Seemless, which has released two great albums. Killswitch Engage is the best Metal band in the world right now. As far as creating a new genre: "Metalcore" if you will, KSE owns the genre. All other bands are merely imposters. You can compare KSE to innovative bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica/Megadeth and even KoRn as bands that single handidly led an entire scene. KSE destroys 99% of the bands out there on stage. It isn't even a contest. Put anyone of your lame "Punk" bands on stage with KSE and they'll be going home crying to their mommies.

    My Score:

I am really confused... alot of people seem to be dismissing Killswitch alot as of late just because the whole metalcore thing seems to be played out and this band was a major reason for the expansion of the genre. well apparently everyone forgot that this band is just straight up good and innovative. "As Daylight Dies" is clearly nothing like "The End of Heartache" because there definitely aren't any songs that could be categorized as possible hit songs (and TEOH was heavily populated with these). Apparently KsE also decided to get smart and realize that their last cd was much too formulatic and decided to break out a heavier and much more technically proficient album just to silence their critics... for this i commend them.

I've heard a lot of complaints from people that this album has way too much clean singing, but i'd say that the band also decided to get way heavier and abandoned the simple verse-chorus schematic that was prevalent on TEOH and took up a more free-form style that made "Alive or Just Breathing" so awesome. This album is their best work since AOJB thanks to the great flow and consistency present on it, and though nothing stands out at first, every track can eventually be taken for its own awesomeness.

This band is not BTBAM or Converge or Isis... they make catchy, yet highly engaging and thought-out metalcore and thats why i like them just as much as i like those other bands. They also arent shitty ass Atreyu, From First to Last, Avenged Sevenfold or whatever mindless, substance free fashioncore band that the kids love these days either. Much like Pantera in the 90s, these guys are not following the trends and are sticking with what works best. For that they should at least get respect.

"i don't get it. you liked the last album, but you wont get this one and don't want to hear any songs off of it?"

Yeah, basically. I got The End Of Heartache when I hadn't even heard the word "metalcore" before. Whilst I'd still classify it as a fun record, it's not an avenue I want to go down again. I mean, it's not like I've even listened to a lot of the other bands that flood the genre, but I've heard enough to make know that I really, really can't be arsed to put up with this stuff, since it's just not my cup of tea, whether these guys are a good example of the genre or not.

It was just a phase I went through, I guess. Not one I'm ashamed of as such, but not one I want to revisit.

Um...no. Jesse is so far superior to Jones it's not even funny. Jone's sounds like a fucking cheesy charicature of Leach. Not only that, Jones cant write lyrics for shit. Leach's lyrics were beyond amazing. Some fo the most powerful and uplifting lyrics I've ever heard in my life. Jones just bitches about girls. Killswitch stands for nothing now...fuck these douche bags.

However, I will agree on one thing. Adam is one HELL of a producer. He should do us all a favor and off Killswitch so he can produce every band he can. Really, he makes everything sound fucking massive and I love it.

Posted by Deadpan on 2006-12-01 12:18:02

I dunno, to me, it seems a major way to shoot yourself in the foot to announce that you're basically only releasing an album because the record label's feet are getting itchy.

I enjoyed The End of Heartache. A lot, actually. I won't be getting this, hopefully not hearing anything off it at all.

Even though this genre is painfully oversaturated right now, there are still "good" bands and "bad" bands doing it. These guys are definitely one of the good ones.

It doesn't hurt that the band doesn't take themselves so seriously and actually seem to be fueled by liking music rather than hating their girlfriends.

"anyone know if the GZA/DJ muggs album is worth getting?"

    Score's for that album "Grandmasters".

I would download it first, but if you really like GZA's voice and old style wu-tang beats them i'm sure you will enjoy it. I found that some of the tracks were excellent and some were okay, but it's listenable as an album. Better than most hip-hop out there... Score is for that.

The word "metalcore" is enough to make me completly dismiss this kind of music. Punk-Metal on the other hand... sucks. Strung Out is really the only band I like that leans towards punk-metal.

i was expecting this to be complete shite, but i actually quite like the more melodic direction they've gone in, even if i did prefer jesse's vocals to howard's.

however, the main riff in "my curse" is a blatant rip off of a riff in "realist surrealist" by johnny truant. this could be written off as coincidence, if it wasn't for the fact that Adam D. produced the johnny truant album!

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 1, 2006 at 5:18 AM (EST)

the first paragraph is full off bullshit. Jesse could do perfectly good clean vocals, they could have done melody if they wanted but they didnt. Case and Point being Jesse's new band.

Howard Jones just does more melody in the band cause despite being huge and all, hes a girly bitch.
