Do people really buy sampler compilations? I suppose it makes sense if such a thing is available for free on the counter of your local record store. Someone must be purchasing since the labels insist on releasing. Epitaph offers us their version in the guise of Unsound, which replaces its past Punk-O-Rama comps. If nothing else, such collections capture the “hot” sound of a particular era. Right now we’re steeped in glossy, over-compressed and Auto-Tuned rock music...not punk or hardcore as the CEOs may want you to believe. What we hear so often and especially on this double CD is plain old rock music, updated for the 21st century with darker bangs and studded belts.

The initial portion of Unsound perhaps purposely revels in such fare. From First to Last, Escape the Fate, Motion City Soundtrack, and Matchbook Romance all meld into on amorphous mass of 4/4 tempos and bombastic vocals that’d make Steven Perry proud. Vanna toss out some quick switches in temperament, with god-awful “singing” into worse “screaming.” The second half of the CD offers up more street-cred hardcore with Converge and Some Girls. Then we have the more experimental fare in the hip-hop of Sage Francis and Dangerdoom (both the highlights of this sampler). Bad Religion, Pennywise and the Bouncing Souls appear to remind us of the sound Epitaph once signified in punk.

A DVD accompanies the music, chock full of videos from many of the artists. If any fan needs a reason to buy a CD that features already released songs, a collection of videos may as well do. None of this is to argue that the music found herein is unlistenable. There’s a little something in here to satisfy the musical auteur of all things Epitaph. Still, the kids will download it, the videos too thanks to YouTube.

What I mean, and I know seeing past your own ego to comprehend my actual words may be hard, is that people have been making the exact same argument you are making about Epitaph signing these bands, and namedropping the same obscure "real" emo bands for 4-5 years now, yet you're acting like you're the first. Stop it.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 3:54 PM (EST)

"So, you're about five years too late to this discussion, AND you're trying to namedrop? Ha."

Oh geeze, you're talking about time being relevant on a site that reviews Discharge reissues.

So I mention the likes of Vermin Scum and such, big whoop. I just find it amusing that people are still in the habit of naming off Epitaph bands in tight-pants as "emo".

im gonna go ahead and say that 3 is the best one,
by the time 6 came out, it seemed that most of the artists had definitely crossed over to the pop side of pop-punk, making a vagrant sampler seem equal by comparsion.

    Posted by fox82 on 2006-12-14 12:05:50

Hey, why didn't Epitaph carry on doing PunkOrama compilations with the (few) punk bands that it still has and stick all the other commercial bullshit on the unsound disc? I don't see why Epitaph has to have just one regular compilation series. I can understand that everyone wants a slice of the emo/screamo action, but why shit on your fans like Victory has?

people used to buy sampler comps before mp3s existed......now there is no reason to buy sampler comps

Posted by FuckYouOiOiOi on 2006-12-14 01:37:41

did you know there was a time on this land!

    Posted by at_the_drive_in_21 on 2006-12-13 22:57:51

Yeah, the 6th one was my favourite as well. The ALL track on it is so rad.

In terms of Hopeless Samplers, number 3 is the best. The first 6 songs are all killer.

Posted by SuperRad on 2006-12-13 22:41:54

I agree 6 was the best. That Osker song was cool. Man I miss Osker.

    My Score:

i own every punk-o-rama up till 7 (and every fat music too) and i say punk-o-rama volume six was the best one.

unsound is a piece of shit.

    My Score:

I looked at this comp and thought that it was pretty gash. But I thought the idea was still great. Relitively cheap release chock full of bands that the kids like, with maybe some new ones they can introduce them too.

I figure that was what the comps were always there to do, show some bands you already like alongside some you aint heard of, and in that instance i give this a 3 1/2, because it does it well enough for its purpose.

nothin can touch punk o rama 4
it has the best artwork too.

    unlike now

number 3 was easily the best

    Posted by cash_money_hustla on 2006-12-12 22:58:44

You can get assigned things when you aren't staff?

"Epitaph has "emo/screamo" bands on its label now?

Something tells me its not the pretentious variety that ape the back-catalogue of Vermin Scum, but rather the kind that live inside Hot Topics all over america and sing about how they're going to "kill their fifteen year old girlfriend and douse her in hot-sauce and masscara".

To be completely honest, even the fellows jocking the ashes of Annapolis are more fun than the later."

So, you're about five years too late to this discussion, AND you're trying to namedrop? Ha.

    My Score:

"POR 5 was pretty good, but didn't it have the Hives?"

If it did, then they were the only redeemable part of that shitbag. Seriously, Epitaph. What a joke.

I just bought this piece of shit for $3 and I want my money back. There are about 3 listenable songs on there, the rest is god awful

ehh...it's got Converge and Some Girls on it, so it's not terrible. Still, I wouldn't spend money on it.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 1:33 PM (EST)

The label has moved on. "Gone is the melodic/hardcore pop of yesteryear"...now Mr.Brett has figured out what will sell, not what's good pop-punk. I like what he's doing with Anti-, but Epitaph now isn't just lame, like is was in the '90s -- it's irrelevant. They offer nothing more than any other emo/screamo label.

no, i don't think por5 had the hives... at least not in europe. from the almost 30 tracks there's very few skipable tracks on it.. good songs by nofx, pennywise, vision, madball, af, guttermouth (maybe...), voodoo glow skulls etc.

5 was the shit, but 6 had more of an impact on me. Basically I liked the soundtrack to Dave Mirra BMX Maximum Remix (Millencolin, Death By Stereo, Deviates, Pennywise, Dropkick Murphys, Rancid, etc) and I saw POR 6 for $5 and it had a lot of those bands. After buying it I've been obsessed with almost every punk band signed to Epitaph.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 11:22 AM (EST)

the punk or rama cd's were so good. this...this is not. other than the souls and the draft. the rest is doo doo. especially the new bands i never heard of that all sounded like the Used or something. it made my head hurt.

"dear lord, thank you for baby ducks, ziggy comics, and sweatin' to the oldies 1, 2, and 4"

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-12-12 08:53:53

POR 5 was pretty good, but didn't it have the Hives? And it also had that crappy Refused b-side. They could have used any song by Refused and they chose that one...

But the 6th one is still the best, got it back in like 5th/6th grade and I've been obsessed with the 'punk' bands that have signed to Epitaph ever since.

    Posted by fox82 on 2006-12-12 08:10:20

Well at least they stopped using the punk-O-rama title for these comps... i think after por7 or 6, epitaph began to suck. Give me punk-o-rama 1, 3 and 5 any day over this shit!

Posted by crazytoledo on 2006-12-12 08:02:20
    My Score:

The design for this album is awesome, but besides that, this was pretty bland.

    Best Epitaph Comp: Punk-O-Rama 6

Posted by istapledmyfoot on 2006-12-12 02:20:20

these things have been rendered useless, shitty songs aside most of these songs are available for free as mp3's on the Epitaph website let alone illegally. Best POR? I'd say 3.

Posted by seanstrummer on 2006-12-12 01:00:27

not very good, even with BR and the Bouncing souls.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 12:56 AM (EST)

I used to buy them back in the day when it took 30 minutes for my shitty dialup connection to download a low bitrate mp3 file. They seem kind of redundant now.
