Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Back in February or so I caught a rumor that NOFX would be playing in Seoul, South Korea, where I'm currently working. I was cautiously optimistic about it though, because Korea's punk scene seems as though it is passed over by established bands in favor of Japan. When I finally received an official announcement from NOFX several weeks later that a Seoul date would be included as part of their "Pacific Rim Job" tour, I was absolutely stoked.

The venue that hosted the show, the Rolling Hall, was actually rather small, given NOFX's popularity (at least in the States). For those familiar with the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio, the floor area is comparable in size. I'd estimate that it fit maybe 200-250 people. Opening the show were three Korean bands and one band hailing from Japan: Shorty Cat, Same Old Story, Good 4 Nothing (Japan), and the Strikers.

Although I ditched out of work early to catch the show, I still arrived in the midst of Shorty Cat's set. The all-girl band played a really catchy brand of pop-punk. I'm pretty awful with comparisons, but I'd say that they were in the same vein as Screeching Weasel / Teenage Bottlerocket / the Lillingtons / any number of other bands drawing heavily from the Ramones. They were really tight musically and I genuinely enjoyed their set, but they lacked any real stage presence, which was a bit of a disappointment.

Honestly, the next three bands sort of blended together for me. They all played the same brand of poppy/melodic rock, with the occasional "scream-o" yelp. Umm...the bass player from Same Old Story had a Suicidal Tendencies hat, which is pretty cool if you're into them, I guess. Although Same Old Story, Good 4 Nothing, and the Strikers were really good at their particular branch of punk/rock, my favorite part about their respective sets was that they didn't exceed 20 minutes. A bit cruel, but true.

About 25 minutes after the Strikers finished up their set, NOFX took the stage. As expected, they talked/joked for a few minutes amongst themselves and members of the audience before starting up an intro that lead into "Dinosaurs Will Die." At this point, the audience went off dancing, gesturing towards the band, and singing along. Early on in the set the speakers on the right side of the stage went out, garbling the vocals and one of the guitars, but barring that the band played pretty damn well. Between songs, Fat Mike and El Hefe spouted off on Christianity, George W. Bush, the military presence in Iraq (and even went off on a couple of loud-mouthed soldiers in attendance), the difficulties of finding drugs in Korea, and how playing the show set them back nearly $5,000. Also worth noting is that whenever the band fucked up, they'd hand out bottles of soju (a dirt-cheap Korean liquor made with rice) to the audience. Although I didn't get to see "The Decline" performed in its entirety for the second year in a row, the personal song highlights for me were "Perfect Government," "Franco Un-American," "Eat the Meek" (although they fucked it up and didn't make it all the way through), "Scavenger Type," and "Bottles to the Ground." The entire set list, in order, was:

  1. Intro/Dinosaurs Will Die
  2. Perfect Government
  3. Franco Un-American
  4. Seeing Double at the Triple Rock
  5. Scavenger Type
  6. Stickin' in My Eye
  7. Eat the Meek
  8. What's the Matter with Parents Today?
  9. Leaving Jesusland
  10. Bob
  11. An instrumental with El Hefe on trumpet listed as "New Herb"
  12. 'Seoul' Doubt (Fat Mike couldn't refrain from making the lame pun)
  13. Murder the Government
  14. The Brews
  15. Radio (Rancid cover)
  16. A Bad Religion cover (not written into the set list)
  17. She's Nubs
  18. I'm Telling Tim
  19. Instant Crassic
  20. Can't Get the Stink Out
  21. See Her Pee
  22. Bottles to the Ground
After finishing up "Bottles to the Ground," El Hefe said, "Hey, keep yelling for a bit, we'll be back in about 30 seconds to play an encore." Sure enough, roughly thirty seconds later, the band came back out and played "Linoleum" and "Kill All the White Men." One final note: Before the Rancid cover the band said, "We're going to play a cover of one of the greatest punk bands that will never play in Seoul!" and before the Bad Religion cover the band said, "Here's another cover of one of the greatest punk bands that will never play here!"

Here are some pictures from the show:

    My Score:

I was at the show. It sucked balls. Between songs they were one of the most unlikeable bands I've ever heard. Yes, I know it's funny that Asian people talk differently than us. Get over it. And yes, we know our punk scene is small and not very commercially successful. That's what I love about it.

One reason they lost $5000 was because they insisted on staying in an expensive hotel.

In short, I hope Nofx never comes back to Asia again. They're probably fine in Japan, but they gave a very bad impression in Korea, China, and Taiwan.

A week earlier the Slackers came and played two shows. They were even in smaller venues, played way better shows, stayed in a hostel, and they came away with a slight profit in the end.

    best band ever

Sorry dude, but how can you give this five stars when they have to stop some of their songs halfway through because they fuck up so badly? Just because they make a habit of being sloppy doesn't make it endearing.

Didn't you read his second post? He's manic-depressive, he can't help it.

Wow, what is up with that fool's comment harassing the reviewer?

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 5:53 PM (EDT)

    - knifetrader: They haven't done the "10 songs in 6 minutes" thing in a few years
    - Dante: they almost always play 20 songs (unless it's Warped obviously)

There lucky Cho Seung-Hui was in virginia and not at this show.

I thought it was a good review. Inclusion of pics was nice, too.

    Posted by Phantom_Maggot on 2007-04-18 01:32:55

I know it's not [popular but I love "Can't Get the Stink Out"...that's awesome they played it. I love "My Name Is Bud" off that album as well.

Bipolar disorder is no laughing matter. And let me tell you this Mr. One-And-A-Half Stars, you will never know what it's like to be in Korea at all because this cock-biter-offer is a terrible writer. End transmission!

    My Score:

Score's for the irrationally angry post a few down. By the way YOU write I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're on a whole lot of meds to control your bipolar disorder.

I've read far worse reviews here. However it would be nice to have more description; I still have no idea what a punk show in Korea is like after reading this and I'm still curious.

Good review, sounds like it was a cool show.

Oh, and I second the playing in Scotland thing :)

Posted by HumanUnkind on 2007-04-17 15:32:23

NOFX are ace. They need to play Scotland some time, or if they could play Miami over the summer, that would be aaace!

what the hell is going on in the last comment

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at 2:50 PM (EDT)

This is the worst review I've ever read. I can tell that you have terrible taste in music and that you probably have a small penis. Judging by your writing style I can tell that you probably spent your weekends sitting in your room with your hood up writing stupid papers while your totally awesome friends were in the living room playing video games and making hilarious comments about various social events. Also, I'm pretty sure that those are not even real song titles so I wish you would stop wasting everyones time. If you saw this show in Korea, perhaps you should stay there because everyone here is much better off without you around. JERK!

Weird...those were put up as I was commenting. Thanks.

Anonymous - No idea what Bad Religion song it was. I've really tried, but I could never get into that band.

Knifetrader - They did say, "We're going to play four songs in three minutes." ("I'm Telling Tim" through "See Her Pee")

Anonymous - If you recall, the speakers went out a few times during Good 4 Nothing (I'm pretty sure) and The Strikers (definitely). During "Dinosaurs Will Die" the speakers on the right side of the stage went out for about a minute.

I took some crappy pictures of the show. I don't know if they can get posted on here, but if anyone wants to see them I've posted them elsewhere.

    no speakers went out!

No "don't call me white"? And no 10 Songs in 6minutes-thing...

    I would've been a little disappointed.

    My Score:

it was probably a punked up version of scavenger type, which they have played before. one of the greatest and most memorable live bands (even if they're too fucked up to remember it) and, obviously, one of the greatest (if not the greatest) punk bands around.

can't wait till they come back to chicago...

    My Score:

scavenger type. hmm. don't know how that song would go over live.

score's for the NOFX show i saw at warped this past year in chicago.

    Posted by jacknife737 on 2007-04-17 00:31:48

its cool that the band is making an effort to play these locations which most bands seem to skip. Now if only NoFx would do a proper North American tour, sure would be nice to see the band for longer then 30 min.

    Posted by Dante3000 on 2007-04-17 00:14:03

Good for them. I've seen the band a pretty good number of times and never do I recall them playing that many songs. But then again they probably don't get out their much.

Any idea what BR song it was? Probably "We're Only Gonna Die" I'm guessing.

Posted by GlassPipeMurder on 2007-04-17 00:12:40

pretty good except for putting Can't Get the Stink Out and See Her Pee near the end. two nofx songs that don't do anything for me.

    oh yeah...South Korea's Got Seoul!
