Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Oh my, what has happened to Hopesfall? Many people wrote Hopesfall off after the release of A-Types threw many people for a loop. I admit, I was one of those people who initially complained heavily about it after the delightful The Satellite Years, but the strange thing is A-Types kept finding its way back into my CD player every month or so. Yes, there was a major shift in style, but songs such as "The Ones" and "Per Sempre Marciamo" still contained that Hopesfall feel and some songs such as "Start and Pause" just rocked.

Well, all that is gone on the latest Hopesfall disc Magnetic North. While A-Types had at least some connection to earlier Hopesfall, this new album severs all ties and makes me wonder the band still continues on under the name Hopesfall. This is a straight rock record with almost no noticable traces of what this band once was.

The album actually opens with one of the strong tracks, "RX Contender the Pretender." Jay Forrest continues the trend he started on A-Types of mainly singing with a few light growls mixed in for good measure. The frustrating thing about this album is that there are some parts, such as the middle of "Swamp Kittens," that sound very interesting, but as quickly as they came, they are gone. Another gripe I have is the three interlude songs on the album. "I Can Do This on an Island" is absolutely horrible. Jay Forrest's voice is hard to listen to as he sings over a lightly strummed guitar for a minute and a half. I thought I liked the song "The Canon" until I realized the riff is an exact ripoff of Hum's excellent song "Little Dipper." So I guess for Hopesfall, being influenced by Hum now means ripping off their exact riffs. I also guess the short songs are supposed to bridge the album together, but they just seem awkward and out of place. "Paisley" might be a tolerable closer if Jay Forrest didn't come in with pointless screams of "I know!" at the most inappropriate moments. The addition of a piano in "Cubic Zirconias Are Forever" is startling and like the rest of this album, extremely boring. Many of these songs just plod along at a three to four-minute pace before ending with little notice.

Parts of the first two songs grab me and "Vacation/Add/Vacation! "is actually a good track. Other than that, however, this album is pretty much garbage. If I want this type of album I can get it from ten different and better bands. From listening to this album you would think Hopesfall collected all their B-Sides from A-Types and then listened to some Circa Survive before heading to the studio. Go ahead and throw the dirt on this band; they are officially dead.

"but to say this album was less then amazing ..well you'd have to be some fuck ass no talent as a musician so become a music critic douche bag"

When did music opinions become objective?

man you stupid! ill admit the obvious rip off of hum and maybe even some smashing pumpkin riffs, but this album is the best since satelite years hands down. Hopesfall has grown up alot as musicians and it shows alot, and i will also stick with the idea that you can still tell musically mainly guitar wise that this band still has its hardcore roots and some sick guitarist. Plus Jay has seriously learned to sing..

Josh Brigham has been there since "The Frailty of Words." So there you go.

"again, all you little fuckers that keep complaining about how none of the new hopesfall shit stacks up to the first 3 records ... there is not a SINGLE original member remaining in hopesfall. same name, very different band."

Then why use the name Hopesfall unless you are trying to capitalize off the fan base built on the first three records?

    My Score:

Funny, I think it sounds more like older Hopsefall than A-Types did. Still nowhere near as good, but much better than the straight up radio rock of the last album.

seriously, where do punknews.org find these people? how bias can you get? have you ever heard of a band evolve their sound and become innovative instead of churning out same slightly recycled sound? god i hate people like you, music is meant to be dynamic, and artists want to be challenged and push the boundaries a little, and you would expect nothing less from hopesfall,

This review definetly made me chuckle a bit. Sometimes I enjoy reading the bad reviews more than the good and certainly more than the good reviews of bad cds.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 6:41 PM (EDT)

The review was dead on. The people who are defending this "ambitious effort" of theirs are not the same people who were listening to hopesfall 3 cd's ago. If you like it more power to you, but as a fan who liked their old material and hates this pseudo-hard rock crap I couldn't write this band off any harder if i tried. And I do have to agree, there are a shit ton of bands that sound like this new sound so congratulations to those who like this (in my opinion boring) kind of music. In response to all the people who are going to say "there's tons of bands that sound like metalcore with screaming, etc." i must reply: yeah there are, but are any of em any good anymore? Nope the very few that were any good have all done the same thing as hopesfall... becomed watered down versions of rock bands who lack any decent song writing.

Score is for the reviewer's accuracy.

    First three albums: really good.

    Last two: suck.

    My Score:

The part about the track that is Hum's Little Dipper is a bit skewed. They are huge Hum fans.... look up the definition of Canon (what they titled it)

Canon can be vaguely meant as gospel, in this case they are saying one of the bands they openly idolize and they wear that influence on their sleeve.

What's the screening process to be a reviewer? If you like Good Charlotte then you're in? Magnetic North has more instances of their former glory than your beloved A-Types, silly boy. I dare say you'd be hard pressed to find "10 bands that can do the same" as this album, that's golden.

what the heck is this reviewer on, i can do this on an island was a great song, and i really like the direction that hopesfall have taken, just cuz they dropped their metalcore roots and decided to play some real music doesnt mean its shitty

one of the better albums i've heard so far this year.

Posted by LUFPromotions on 2007-05-18 19:18:16

i was unimpressed with where the progression has gone, but glad to see at least the effort to branch out is there.

at least its not another new found glory record with the same whining lyrics about how the girl who broke his heart in the 4th grade is still controlling your life, 20 years later...

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 5:51 PM (EDT)

whoever wrote this review sounds like a little whiny hardcore kid. Hopefall is an amazing band and i think it's awesome that they can rock different styles on as they move along. if you want a band that sounds the same on every album go listen to Pennywise.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 5:25 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

that might be one of the worst reviews i've read on this site, ever. a-types was a completely rushed and underachieving record . i've been around hopesfall since the early days, and magnetic is one of their most ambituous yet. nothing is going to hold up to no wings or satellite years, but what people keep forgetting is that there is not a single original member remaining in hopesfall. this is a very different band than the hopesfall of the no wings era. accept this for what is is. a great rock record.

Shines Through has one of the best build-ups ever

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 4:56 PM (EDT)

    hopesfall = melodic hardcore? what?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 4:18 PM (EDT)

Damn that is a harsh review. I think this album is pretty good. Their older stuff is wonderful, but melodic hardcore is way over played and I'm glad they strayed from their roots.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 2:30 PM (EDT)

yeah... i love fraility and no wings. satellite years was a change but it truly is one of my favorite records. its so sad to see such a great band fade to nothing

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 1:37 PM (EDT)

"The Frailty Of Words" was also a pretty great album IMO, and "Broken Heart of a Traitor" was a great song. I'm not sure whether "Frailty" or "No Wings" came first, but everything after those two has been absolute garbage.

    Posted by SydBarrett420 on 2007-05-18 10:43:37

I'll give Hopesfall one thing that I didn't mention in the review. Regardless of their music, Hopesfall continually has some of the best album artwork around. The new cover looks great and so did A-Types

    Posted by SydBarrett420 on 2007-05-18 10:09:51

I don't think there are many people who are going to post here who DON'T know about No Wings to Speak of etc...

Hell "Th End of an Era" is many, MANY Hopesfalls fan's favortie song. I am an "April Left With" guy.

    Posted by fallingupwards84 on 2007-05-18 06:14:22

everyone acts as if The Satellite Years was their peak; its like they never heard the material before that album when they had their original vocalist - who had a much better scream - and their original guitarists.
The No Wings To Speak Of EP far outshined that one -- many Hopesfall fans were disappointed with Satellite Years when it came out

of course all of those original fans are gone now, which probably explains why nobody knows their older material.
    blah. whatever.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 18, 2007 at 4:47 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

Eh i see where the review is coming from but i disagree. I love old hopesfall. I was extremely shocked when A-Types came out and i find that to be a horrible album.

It was experimenting with a potentially interesting new sound, but as you said they held onto a few similar sounding aspects of "old hopesfall". I think this was a disaster especially since the band scarcely had an original member in it.

I think Magnetic North nails the direction they TRIED to go on A-Types, and do so better than a lot of bands out there. Its a little grunge, a little experimental, and a lot of rock.

Some of the songs seem to drag onm but really if you really give it a fair listen, what seems like those drawn out boring sections, prove to be a noticeable amount of well thought out intricacy and song writing.

kind of harsh review. don't write them off completely yet. i mean, if there is still a trace of love for this band in any shape or form, then don't write them off. this is kind of funny, but i just purchased their old ep "no wings to speak of..." heh, yeah. i do like the album artwork though.
