Sickkkkk hardcore album. My favorite songs: "In the Belly of a Shark", "Will Someone Shoot That Fucking Snake", and "Just Because You Sleep Next to Me Doesn't Mean You're Safe." I just hate how the song names are a sentence long.

swellersfan7407 (April 1, 2009)

Im pretty sure they didnt ask for all the hype buddy!!

Dead60s (May 13, 2008)

TommyPickles (March 21, 2008)

This album is fucking killer.

allon (November 30, 2007)

this may be my favorite review i've seen on this site haha. yeah, i liked the record a whole lot, but i agree that the hype for this band has been RIDICULOUS and it's only gonna let people down when they hear it. It's just another hardcore band everybody.

I don't like this sort of stuff at all, it's boring retreads, but aren't you the same kids that get all silly over just as dull, trite, seen-it-a-million-times-before stuff as Kid Dynamite, Converge or Paint It Black?'

Really? you've seen it a million times with Converge? Weird, you must have been seeing them do it a million times then, because not only is that band in a league of their own as far as hardcore goes in general, and then there is also the fact that they have been around for, oh, I don't know, around 14 fucking years now.

Wikipedia was made so people who don't know anything about the bands they talk about can be given a chance to not look like tools. Maybe you should take a look!

Enchanted_Steel (August 6, 2007)

I was just skimming this review and I thought that one part said Ric Flair and I got a little excited.

moneenerd (July 30, 2007)

i would say GALLOWS is a lot more like 90's post-hardcore (like Drive Like Jehu, The Corta Vita, Hot Cross) than they are 80's hardcore. Other than a few riffs here and there, i don't see much of anything "hardcore" there.

Albert_Belle (July 17, 2007)

Live this band is decent, they do their thing, they're nice dudes too. But their music is repulsive, just terrible.

Anonymous (July 15, 2007)

Ummmm.....he DID like the band. A 7 is a good score.

Amazingthemike (July 15, 2007)

Have a sense of humor, Mikey! I like Gallows, and this review made me laugh quite a bit. Well done Brian!

Josh, you know I enjoy a good laugh. But this review wasn't funny, it was pointless. I don't care that he didn't like the band; each person is entitled to his or her opinion. But if you can't convey your thoughts into words, don't bother. Gimmick reviews are for individuals lacking writing skills or just going for the "shock" approach.

Anonymous (July 14, 2007)

Yeah, they really are just a shittier version of The Bronx.

icapped2pac (July 12, 2007)

Score is for the review. It was great but I would like to see what could be done with this review style and a band like From First To Last. Their pictures alone are funny.

Anonymous (July 12, 2007)

Dear Emo Kids,

For those of you who didnt like the cd this is because your all afraid of something different. You all want to listen to some screamo band that has been done over a thousand times before.BORING!!! All of the bands out there sound the same and the music keeps been done over a million times. Now this is something new(not original)but new to music today besides all of the screamo bands(escape the fate, the used.FFTL,silverstein, alesana, blessthefall)all of that stuff. Now this is a band that has came out and did something different besides sticking to the original formula.ALL PRAISE GALLOWS!

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
This music is screamo dumbass.

Hilarious.

Nice review. I'd been wondering what the deal was with these guys for a while. I've noticed some of the hype, but had no clue what they were like. Oh well. At least they're not Enter Shikari.

wearestillalive (July 12, 2007)

fuck this band. i know a bunch of brit hardcore bands that are better.

AlmostPunkENough (July 12, 2007)

hahaha, great fuckin job.

this album is truly medicore.

onegirlarmy (July 12, 2007)

Score is for Brian's review. I laughed my ass off.

Props Brian, for the amount of time in Photoshop you probably spent putting that together.

Oh, and Gallows are alright. Decent band but nothing groundbreaking for sure.

great review. after spending time with this album its not the total trash i thought it was at first but its certainly not groundbreaking or amazing in any way

ConsolationPrizefighter (July 11, 2007)

Way to go Warped Tour. Not only is your logo sold out and contrived, but you mentioned something about the band being a four piece when the press picture you put RIGHT NEXT TO THAT SENTENCE clearly has five people.

Awesome review. Doesn't tell me at all what this band sounds like besides the Bronx comment, but I like the effort.

P-Fresh (July 11, 2007)

Lame review. Great band.

Have a sense of humor, Mikey! I like Gallows, and this review made me laugh quite a bit. Well done Brian!

thirtyseconds (July 11, 2007)

Ha ha... Attack Vipers! Yeah! Great band... I would like to see them go places. As for this review...it seemed unnecessarily bitchy. I agree with the score though, from what I've heard

Anonymous (July 11, 2007)

i wrote these guys off at first for being a "hardcore" band on epitaph records... but by golly they could fit right in when epitaph was good!

Anonymous (July 11, 2007)

is the reviewer American or British? the band are full of enthusiasm and have a great future. who cares if they sound like alot of American bands. they are gallows and they do thier thing, extremelly well. once you see them live you'll know. saw them in Bristol on my 23rd and they sung me happy birthday

Anonymous (July 11, 2007)

So we're clear, the best band playing '80s hardcore this decade is Western Addiction.

Western Addiction is good but I'd say they are maybe the easiest band to find music of that plays 80's hardcore this decade. There are plenty better bands playing 80's hardcore Warkrime and Career Suicide to name a couple.

Anonymous (July 11, 2007)

fuck this review. fuck this reviewer. fuck this band. fuck the pictures. fuck everyone who lets this shit post. fucking idiots.

Anonymous (July 11, 2007)

Decent album. Way overrated, though. The best part about it is his British accent, but the music is a bit underwhelming.

jamespastepunk (July 11, 2007)

CapnHawk (July 11, 2007)

Everyone's been going on bout this album over here for ages.

They're average at best, they sound too much like The Bronx.

I love The Bronx, but Gallows is just plain 'meh'

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Great band. I saw them at the Calgary Warped Tour and they were fucking awesome. I enjoy them alot more live than I do the album, but I still think you should pick this up. It reminds me alot of good 80's hardcore, thats a good thing...

Kursk (July 10, 2007)

yes, this band is pretty overhyped, but that doesn't mean they don't play good in your face hardcore punk rock and roll, because they do. It's been done before, but what hasn't these days and they do what they do rather well. I like pretty much all of the album, but I have the UK release, is the Epitaph version any different?

PhantomBoner (July 10, 2007)

Best review ever. Alright record.

SloaneDaley (July 10, 2007)

Checked these gusy out, meh. You guys should listen to Double Negative if you want some real intense hardcore punk.

elephantdwarf (July 10, 2007)

"This album is nothing special........it isn't very creative nor doesn't really push the bar in terms of intensity. Seems like WAYYY too much hype for this release. If you want intensity go listen to the new Pissed Jeans record......the Gallows don't hold shit."

while i agree that the new Pissed Jeans is good. its not as revolutionary as people claim it to be. i really don't feel all that much intensity when listening to Hope For Men. Shallow was much more intense.

BrandonSideleau (July 10, 2007)

Don't you dare compare this tripe to Paint It Black.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

rodeoclown (July 10, 2007)

oh god, I love this review, excellent job. you know something's wrong in the world when Gallows are considered the cream of Epitaph.

I always saw them as a major label tool - there's a saturation of emo bands out there, and the majors know this. "not interested in MCR/FOB/Panic? then listen to Gallows! your money will still go to us in the end anyway".

insane theories aside, they should really rot in hell for their cover of Nervous Breakdown.

inagreendase (July 10, 2007)

I make attempts at writing around 20 "constructive" reviews a month. Forgive me for taking a "break."

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

I'm not knocking the steal i just mean there is far, far better UK hardcore than some Paint It Black Rip off and this is coming from somebody who enjoys The Steal.

CatNamedVirtue (July 10, 2007)

Haha... score is for the review, because it is just awesome.

I listened to their stream on myspace... I'm kind of apathetic. Not really into them.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

The warped ads refer to the band as "four madmen" Now, my math is pretty poor to say the least, but I count 5. Maybe I need more numeracy classes.

KurtTGS (July 10, 2007)

I uh, kinda like these guys, and I haven't noticed any hype except the MySpace thing.

HumanUnkind (July 10, 2007)

This album is good, but certainly nowhere near as good as I had hoped it would be. Orchestra of Wolves, In The Belly Of A Shark and a couple more are really good stand outs. NME jumped on them because if they got huge (they aren't going to any time yet) they could say they got it right.

Review was funny as fuck.

miff (July 10, 2007)

november coming fire are a great band, dont nock.
the ghost of a thousand are also a form of bronx cover but done better and there isnt as much bullshit hype about them. the gallows arent terrible or good merely mediocre i really dont see what the fuss is all about. this review is nearly as good as one of the hwm ones

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

right on with the Bronx comparison! This band is not terrible, but just kinda too polished for me. Were it a little grittier, it'd probably appeal to me more...i hear they put on a good live show.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Abandon Ship and Attack! Vipers! are stellar but, seriously? What exactly is so awful about The Steal?

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Oh wow, using The Steal and November coming Fire as examples of good UK hardcore bands, are you kidding me??? try Boxed In and Abandon Ship or maybe Attack Vipers.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

that was an excellent review

88-fingers-tony (July 10, 2007)

i was more entertained reading this review than i was listening to the album

Smithy (July 10, 2007)

Brilliant review. Can't comment on the album but what I have heard sounds good.

Albert_Belle (July 10, 2007)

My apologies.

Albert_Belle (July 10, 2007)

Glad I wasn't the only one who heard Every Time I Die when I listened to this band, my score still stands.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

I heard one song, sounded like Every Time I Die, then I heard their latest single, sounded like Silverstein before his horrid vocals kicked in. Why is their soooooo much hype surrounding this band? I've heard this before!

denbez (July 10, 2007)

Nice concept for a review, but the "reality" part is "watered down every time i die."

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

hahahaha, brilliant! quite creative, score's for the review, I heard one song from these guys and it just sounded really noisy.

Paul

m-oo (July 10, 2007)

Haha great review. Not a bad band but nothing mind blowing.

Thus_Spoke_Sean (July 10, 2007)

I'm not so cool that I didn't enjoy reading all that. But, I was hoping for a real review at the end of all of it as I haven't listened to them yet, and all i hear is bronx bronx bronx. i wanted something a little more constructive too, i guess i should just check it out myself.

Dante3000 (July 10, 2007)

And people say I have too much time on my hands?

At least this was an honest review that gave the band credit for what they deserve credit for but didn't buy into the hype or follow the trend of equally hyperbolistic backlash.
-Dante

Amazingthemike (July 10, 2007)

Calling this band a Bronx knockoff is the easy way out because you know nothing about rock influenced punk. Gallows definitely "do that style" but they draw their sound from bands like Murder City Devils and Drive Like Jehu.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Sooooo.... No review, then, huh? Just a score and a lame attempt to be witty? Are those pictures and comparisons supposed to be a proper analysis of the album?
I'm sorry, but that was the most hypocritcal thing I've read on the internet all day. It was fighting hype with (anti) hype. Just like the publications you cited, you judged based on word-of-mouth, rather than judging the album -- as an album not as a marketing ploy.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Score is for Brian and the review.

I have no idea who this band is -- so not sure how well the hype is going (especially since I'm obsessed with all things UK).

- Kirby

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Please Mr. Gravedigger sound very little like The Bronx. More screamy, less melodic, way more keyboard-centric as well. Their debut record was pretty solid but I seriously doubt The Bronx are like pantomime villains running around going "NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW OUR SECRET". You could tell either band apart with ease.

givemeamuseumandillfillit (July 10, 2007)

Coldwaffles: I Love the spill canvas review with the hulk in the grass, but that review was just a fun review, this one is just a bullseye.

insinceredave (July 10, 2007)

Great review, as for the band... meh

they do seem to be getting a lot of coverage in my native uk though.

On a side issue, I'm glad that we've hyped a band to our american cousins, makes up for all the frigging bands you send over here with a wave of hype. enjoy!

givemeamuseumandillfillit (July 10, 2007)

My jaw is going to be on the floor for the next few hours, greatest review i've ever seen in my entire life.

Yes, punknews have somehow been spared of all the hype, so a lot of people on here won't get it, but wow, i've never seen such a spot-on-piece of journalism. Brian, you're going to the big leauges!

To clarify a bit:
They recorded a demo, got signed on a very small uk label, british music press hears it and decides to hype it more than they hyped franz ferdinand, and warners pick them up for the world and epitaph in the us. All in a year.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

Great and spot-on review. If this band weren't so hyped ya'll wouldn't be trashing them.

LeightonESmith (July 10, 2007)

The Gallows - hyped and overrated everywhere except here

punknews....... the great leveler

As soon as I heard this i knew it for what it was - a bronx rip off

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

That was the most honest review i think i've ever read on here. This band is RUBBISH, and really isnt very big in england, they seem to be suggesting that they are to the US though.

niveK82 (July 10, 2007)

Shit review, I shall score that

elephantdwarf (July 10, 2007)

"your friend's band was called please mr. gravedigger? hahha...that sucks."

yup. its an old, rare david bowie song.

AphasiacIIC (July 10, 2007)

this band is the bronx if they lost all ability

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)

your friend's band was called please mr. gravedigger? hahha...that sucks.

elephantdwarf (July 10, 2007)

well the first thing i thought about the first time i heard the bronx was that they sounded almost like an exact rip-off of my friends band Please Mr. Gravedigger. which got at least a decent amount of exposure before breaking up and were also around a few years before The Bronx. being that Please Mr. Gravedigger was from San Diego and The Bronx aren't too far away being from L.A. it's not really that far fetched. and Please Mr. Gravedigger was really just an updated/more hardcore influenced version of murder city devils.

GlassPipeMurder (July 10, 2007)

"you realize The Bronx ripped off many a band, right?"

the Bronx are certainly influenced by a lot of bands, but I wouldn't say they're a ripoff. what previous band sounds exactly like the Bronx?

elephantdwarf (July 10, 2007)

"fucking awesome review. right on, too. good stuff, but a definite Bronx rip."

you realize The Bronx ripped off many a band, right?

coldwaffles (July 10, 2007)

This review comes off as trying too hard to be that grass growing review from ages ago or madball review. Good effort though.

Anonymous (July 10, 2007)
