From their humble beginnings, the Beastie Boys have evolved into one of the most prolific, inspiring groups in years. But we all know that they were punk before they were hip-hop. So every once in while, they grace us with a guitar-bass-drums rave-up to remind us of what they once were (see ‘Time for Livin’’ on Check Your Head and ‘Tough Guy’ and ‘Heart Attack Man’ on Ill Communication, not to mention all the really early stuff on Some Old Bullshit…).

In 1995, they released The Aglio E Olio EP. Eight tracks that could have been written and recorded in 1983. Straight up hardcore ala MINOR THREAT and, well, themselves. Think ‘Egg Raid on Mojo Part 2.’ Yeah! Distorted bass, simple, frantic drums, cheap-distortion-pedal guitars, and lots of hollerin’ combine to make this record more than just a throwback.

Highlights include the first track ‘Brand New’ and ADRock’s wacky guitar noodling, ‘Nervous Assistant’s’ cool break-down chorus, and Mike D’s spoken word interlude in ‘Can’t Think Straight’ is flat out hilarious. These songs are a testament to times when hardcore was about attitude, not drop-D tuning, playing really fast, and listening to too much Pantera.

Listen and learn, dude.

    My Score:

To the dumb fucker below me,who the hell cares who they toured with,i have been around for a long time and these guys are true musicians, always have been. And they could play circles around half the so called "punk" bands of today. I personally think that the fact they toured with madonna is pointless. You obviously think that was a big deal... Pity you.

    My Score:

They actually didn't do much for the scene. Agnostic Front, Gorrila Biscuits, Youth of Today, Cro-mags, Murphys Law all kept punk going in NY much more so than say the Beastie Boys. And expecially by the mid to late 80's the Beastie were totally gone from punk right when the scene went down the shitter and it was bands like Sick of it All that practically saved this city from turning to crap while the Beastie Boys were selling out arenas with Run-DMC and rapping it on MTV.

The Beasite Boys are a good band, I don't argue that, but they didnt do much for the NY scene.

i have this on vinyl. what about you? the beastie boys are just way too creative to stay a punk band which is why they're really good. fuck you if you don't like em but i'm from ny and they were 1 of the bands that kept punk going alongside with reagan youth in the early 80s in ny.

The Beastie Boys Kick a major amount of ass! I happen to think that their best album is Ill Communication. Some Old Bull Shit is very good as well. Aglio E Olio is a good album but not their best from their hardcore standpoint. Their best hardcore/punk song is without a doubt B.E.A.S.T.I.E. Are they ever going to release some new stuff. I know Grand Royal shut down but I have missed the beastie boys since Hello Nasty and Sounds of Science. Release something new!!

    My Score:

Whoever said it was damn right. The Beastie Boys were a mediocre hardcore band. Their other stuff is great, but I think people just like the fact that they were a punk band, not that they were an actually good punkband.

    My Score:

beastie boys fucking rock. to be honest i haven't really heard any of the stuff from before they went hip hop, but i love their hip hop stuff. they could definitely be noted as one of the groups that started this whole rock/rap thing that's going on now.

    My Score:

Check Your Head was definitely their best. This is okay. The Beastie Boys were a mediocre hardcore band, but their diversity makes them great.
