This is not a "punk" album in the traditional sense of the word, but if you have an open mind you may be able to really get into it the way I did. The album is basically a guy with an acoustic guitar singing. Odd instruments join in some of the songs, instruments like accordian, banjo, singing saw, bagpipes among many others. Although the lyrics don't make much sense, don't let that throw you off. Just listen to the way he sings/yells and listen to the incredibly catchy melodys. These are the type of songs that grow on you immediatly after your first listen. The album has a raw, gritty sound to it, which is a nice change from overproduced sounding albums of today. The singers voice is also rough sounding, which adds to the coolness of it. If anyone is considering downloading a song by these guys I'd start with "Holland, 1945" as it is the most punk-ish sounding out of the lot. If you like that one then go to the title track. If you like what you hear, go for the rest of the album. I'm not one to listen to anything outside of the punk genre, but this is one of my favorite albums - punk or not punk. A fine, fine record. this is an awesome cd, amateur review though, but i guess thats what it takes to get a review of this cd on this site. Yeah, but this isn't really punk music...Oh well. Its a great album by a great band. This is seriously the most refreshing stuff I've heard in ages ... "Can we get some good reviews like fucking movie life or something cuz this shit sucks..." i'll tell you something, this guy is fucking brilliant. i've read reviews of this album where its compared to 'a marching band on an acid trip' and that's actually pretty accurate. i don't think any of us are this creative, nor will we ever be. this isn't punk at all in musical terms, but it does do it's job of confusing and pissing off the general populace, so i guess you could expand the definition a bit. :P .. this album is recommended if you're in need of something different that doesn't fit in the 'suck' category. allright emo kids i can help you out: Can we get some good reviews like fucking movie life or something cuz this shit sucks... one time i puked up sperm! And I'd like to add... There are other types of music out there than just "punk" and MTV." Haha, shut up. This isn't MTV material at all. Stop being so narrowminded. i dont like this shit. It made me puke. I listen to punk rock not no mtv fake shit. how any one can listen to this is unknown. if i got paid 100 bucks to listen to the whole cd i wouldn't do it. Thats how bad it is. Hey Neutral Milk Hotel, when you are on TRL tell that carson wannaby asshole to f off ok? i've been into punk the last decade, but my favourite album of all time is this one, i still listen to it all the time three years after i got it.. don't talk about your snuggle bunny like that. My friend J.E. Chaplinko likes this. He says it's a poor man's Bens Folds Five. J.E. Chaplinko is a pussy though, so I don't know. this album is seriously in my 10 best of all time. it's so beautiful and pure. the live jeff mangum album that came out last month on orange twin is pretty good too. maybe someday we'll see new neutral milk hotel material... first off, every other review does not start off with a "this isn't a punk cd" disclaimer, infact, i can only think of 3 I've read. Second, since this is punknews.org, if a review is for a band that isn't exactly punk, then I think a disclaimer is appropriate. that way, anyone who's not interested will know right away. With this being a punk site and the album in question being something that isn't anywhere near being considered punk, what's wrong with a short warning stating the fact? it seems like every other review these days is prefaced with "maybe this isn't really a punk record, but..." -- who gives a fuck? y'all should just review what you want, without disclaimers, say what it sounds like and let the reader/listener decide what is or isn't "punk" or "punk rock." great album. on avery island is great too. |
