Remember when I reviewed Daggermouth's debut, Stallone, and mentioned that while it was a decent effort, an abundance of totally watered down, barely hardcore-influenced pop-punk bands just had to be on the way?

Welcome to Exhibit A. Or, well, B depending on who you ask.

Look at the cover, for starters. It's a fucking bloodshot-eyed Cap'n Crunch groping and making out with a female interpretation of the Kool-Aid Man, which is, frankly, way more disturbing than it is amusing.

The Wonder Years take New Found Glory's early mastery of punchy, energetic pop-punk and completely throw it down the well. Every aspect of Get Stoked on It! sounds completely forced, from the gang vocal shouts and cheesy, brief little breakdowns / "mosh" parts to the completely unnecessary keyboards, annoying singing and totally embarrassing lyrics, like "Born to Get Fruit Punched, Homie" where the band namecheck their cover star: "I sure wish I had people I could trust / like my boy, Cap'n Crunch." Like...really? Are they even trying?

It's hard to get stoked about anything on Get Stoked on It!. The only thing I'm stoked on after listening to this album is jumping through a wood-chipper.

This album's really annoying. I kinda dig "What If We Swam Into Nothing?" though, the rest of the album's too grating for me to even grit my teeth through. They've gotten so much better since this though.

Just like Daggermouth and Four Year Strong, The Wonder Years are an excellent band. Yes the lyrics on this album are silly and cheesy and sure the cover art is weird but they obviously aren't taking themselves seriously and are having a lot of fun with what they're doing. You guys should try the same. Also, the name of the song is "'Bout to Get Fruit Punched, Homie". I would be stoked on whoever reviewed this album jumping through a wood chipper too.

You really have to hate fun to not like this record.

I should really just ignore this comment based on the fact that I can easily recite multiple melodies from Ruiner (still haven't heard the new one), but ah, what the hell:

A sample of selections that made Brian's Top 20:
Dead FM. Facetious Folly Feat. Oh! Calcutta!. Mutiny!. The Troubled Stateside. Canyoneer. All of which could very arguably be described as fun. The dealmaker being -- they actually have substance.

On another note, I saw Daggermouth recently in Kelowna, they put on a great show that made trudging through the mosh metal openers worth it. And the drummer is tiiiiight.

how is Samiam Jawbreaker influenced? weren't they around a while before Jawbreaker?

eh, they formed about the same time (1988) but i always think of Jawbreaker being the standard setter of the genre.

1 star? Are you kidding me? This record is a lot of fun. You really have to hate fun to not like this record.

Sure it isn't anything that most people on this site listen to but to give it 1 star it has to be REALLY horrible music.

This gets 1 star and the new A Wilhelm Scream gets a near pefect score... How is that any more memorable than this?

The Wunder Years were known as The Wonder Years until someone (wrongly) made them think it was legally questionable. Superbowl Sunday still sends chills down my spine every time.

The Wunder Years were amazing in general. Given how Jawbreaker-influenced bands like The Lawrence Arms and Samiam got so big, I can't believe The Wunder Years never blew up. everybody check out their music and keep their memory alive: http://www.myspace.com/thewunderyears

ive never heard that first Daggermouth record, but "Turf Wars" is one of my most listened to albums. it reminds me of that last Fastbreak record.

The Wunder Years > The Wonder Years. These guys sound like Sum 41 meets fake hardcore meets annoying keyboards. Why am I so cruel??? I guess they are good for what they are trying to do...

I went through the same thing. I thought it was pretty ok at first and now I think it is lame.

and I agree Four Year Strong is waaaaaayyyyyy better than this band, but people seem to think they are equally bad.

I don't know anything about this band, but does anyone remember the band "The WUNDER YEARS"? They were one of Brian Moss' first bands, before he went on to form The Ghost and later Hanalei. Without knowing anything about this band, I feel I can safely say that Brain Moss' Wunder Years was WAY better than this. Check out their split with Sorry About the Fire on Springman Records or the Function Over Fashion EP on Tomato Head. Some really great punk/post-punk music.
