Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Madcap played first. First impression is a lasting impression and the lasting impression made on me was only an “OK” one. I couldn’t understand why the lead singer was watching the rest of the guys to see if they were in sync or something. It was like a little lost child who forgot his part in the school play. Their first song “Going on the Road” was by far one of the poppiest songs I’ve ever heard in all my life. Actually this band was quite poppy all together and that’s not a bad thing. I chuckled when this band tried to get a pit started and there were about 5 people running in a circle beating on each other. You know your pit is sad when you have a blonde girl with big cleavage jumping in it. That’s not an every day occurrence. Some of the other songs played were “Downtown”, “New Age”, and “Two Steps Behind”.

Next up: 3 piece San Francisco band One Man Army. Now I’ve heard a little here and there about this band, and so tonight I finally got to make a judgment for myself. I liked them…a lot. I honestly don’t know what to say about them. I usually have a hard time getting into the music when I don’t know the band but it was easy this time. They played some new songs one of which was called “She Wants to be Dead”. You know what, just go check this band out. You will not be disappointed.

Now for the reason I even went to this concert: Flogging Molly. Every time I listen to this band I just want to go crazy, they make me so happy. Now in person, boy it was insane. They are such a lively bunch (7 to be exact) and they had the crowd in a wild frenzy. I am sure Madcap would have killed to get that attention in their crowd. Flogging Molly put on one of the most energetic acts I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch. It’s the best when the band is into their own music. Who couldn’t be into a band with such a wide assortment of instruments? I cannot say one bad thing about them whatsoever. I loved them so much.
Set list as follows: “The Likes of You Again”, new song “Drunken Lullabies”, “Selfish Man”, new song “What’s Left of the Flag?”, “The Worst Day Since Yesterday”, “Black Friday Rule”, New song “Rebels of Sacred Heart”, “Devil’s Dance Floor”, and “Salty Dog.”

Now for New Jersey band The Bouncing Souls. These guys are seriously over hyped. I was told they’re brilliant but I can argue that. They are a set of talented musicians although I don’t think brilliance best describes their music. They’ve got likeable qualities, but if you’re not into the pop punk scene, this tour all together is not for you. Back to B.S. They sound like so many bands I’ve heard before, I just can’t place my finger on it. But I still think they are a halfway decent band. I felt as though that show was like having sex: Madcap the foreplay, One Man Army the initial act of having sex, while Flogging Molly were the climax and The Bouncing Souls were where you just kinda lay there tired and naked after. They just weren’t doing it for me. I think I just pissed a lot of people off by saying that but what can I say? Ok, well of course, these guys played “True Believers”, “Hopeless Romantic” and “Ballad of Johnny X”, among other countless familiar tunes.

In a nutshell, I give this tour a 4 of 5 star rating. I had fun, and you can too. Go and find out for yourself.

    flogging molly fucking rocks...and the bouncing souls havent put out anything good since 1997 so flogging molly is the only reason that this is getting what its getting and i didnt even go to the show...

    I saw the show in D.C. when they came here. It was pretty great, but the Bouncing Souls are definitely overrated. Their singer is a fuck. Flogging Molly is god....if in fact he were a drunken Irish mandolin player...

Some years back Propagandhi went out and formed the G7 Welcoming Committee Collective (a worker owned and operated record label dedicated to the expansion of resistance culture through music, print, and spoken word) rather than putting out their own new material-until now.

    The big question here is that in music today, is there a need for these guys? While in the late 70s and early 80s you may be able to name off about 1000 Activism/America Sucks bands, today theres only a few left. Why is that? Bands have moved on from their roots and sing about girls now, times have dramatically changed. I myself can only think of a small handful of people I know who lives are all about activism and anarchy and their pool of supporters and fellow "comrades" are very tiny. Most people who like bands like Propagandhi or Anti Flag for example love their music, just not their messages that they speak of.

    There was a twinge of excitement when it was announced that this album could be downloaded from Napster. I must inform you that there is much more this time around to their c.d. as a whole. Besides getting new songs, stick your c.d. into the c.d. rom drive in your computer and its a multimedia experience. Although most people will care less about the multimedia features and just about the music you can't deny that you cannot experience this with just downloading the album off Napster.

    There are numerous video presentations on here including "Ward Churchill: To Disrupt, Discredit, And Destroy", "The G7 Welcoming Committe", and "William Blum: U.S. Foreign Policy-A Study In Hypocrisy".

    There are also various pamphlets you can view via Acrobat Reader which also comes on the c.d. The activist William Blum contributes a whopping 189 page essay called "To Disrupt, Discredit and Destroy-The FBI's secret War Against The Black Panther Party" and there is also a 16 page thing on why you should chose to be a Vegan.

    There is also a presentation from AK Press Audio where you can read all about Anarchism, Vegetarians, Animal Rights, Zapatisa, all written by "progressive intellectuals and activists".

The activist William Blum contributes a whopping 189 page essay called "To Disrupt, Discredit and Destroy-The FBI's secret War Against The Black Panther Party" and there is also a 16 page thing on why you should chose to be a Vegan.

    There is also a presentation from AK Press Audio where you can read all about Anarchism, Vegetarians, Animal Rights, Zapatisa, all written by "progressive intellectuals and activists".

    The music is the same, they mix together mid 80s political hardcore and early 80s speed metal. Like all the multimedia features, the themes are the same, "Fuck The Border, Bullshit Politicians, and Albright Monument Baghdad". There are some pretty decent songs on here.

    So is this c.d. for you? If you live for anarchy and activist issues I couldn't recommend anything more than this. Its perfect because of the added multimedia experience besides getting new material from Propagandhi. If you are not into hardcore and you especially hate anything to do with politics whatsoever then stay away.

Some years back Propagandhi went out and formed the G7 Welcoming Committee Collective (a worker owned and operated record label dedicated to the expansion of resistance culture through music, print, and spoken word) rather than putting out their own new material-until now.

    The big question here is that in music today, is there a need for these guys? While in the late 70s and early 80s you may be able to name off about 1000 Activism/America Sucks bands, today theres only a few left. Why is that? Bands have moved on from their roots and sing about girls now, times have dramatically changed. I myself can only think of a small handful of people I know who lives are all about activism and anarchy and their pool of supporters and fellow "comrades" are very tiny. Most people who like bands like Propagandhi or Anti Flag for example love their music, just not their messages that they speak of.

    There was a twinge of excitement when it was announced that this album could be downloaded from Napster. I must inform you that there is much more this time around to their c.d. as a whole. Besides getting new songs, stick your c.d. into the c.d. rom drive in your computer and its a multimedia experience. Although most people will care less about the multimedia features and just about the music you can't deny that you cannot experience this with just downloading the album off Napster.

    The Bouncing Souls sound like a lot of the other bands on epitaph. Flogging Molly, I dont see whats so great about them, Yea they are a decent band but I dont see all the hype. I do like the song off the Warped Tour Comp, and a few other songs by them are pretty good at best. MadCap is just a bad band. Going on the road is a terrible song, their set at warped tour was terrible.

    bouncing souls is a pop-punk band. a good pop-punk band. just because a lot of the new pop-punk bands are shit, doesn't mean the word "pop-punk" means "bad-punk". There are plenty of great pop-punk bands out there. BS is one of them.

    maybe we like the Souls but don't feel like dishing out 10's to bands that just pick up their instrments and play. A band has to cuase an amazing feeling on stage and in the crowd to get a 10. They do not do this on the stage, but the crowd certainly gets into it.

    listen, the bouncing souls are the best band. i saw them at the palace and the glass house and they rocked. i also did not like madcap but that's just my opinion. one man army is fuc$#*@ punk rock and flogging molly puts on one of the best shows on earth. the souls are a great band, and any true fan would have enjoyed the concert and all the energy given off. for those who do not know the last song they played was manthem. and dont talk crap unless you know what your talking about because when you do you sound like an ignorant moron. (just a word of advice)

    This show was great. Yeah it was a little crowed, but it was a good time. I watched them in Buffalo NY and they kicked ass. But hey they always do!

    The fact that you label the Bouncing Souls a pop punk band is quite disappointing. True, Hopless and HISMSV are a bit slower than the first three albums, but still far from the shit that is pop punk as we know it today. In any case, a large majority of the songs played in S.D. were off of the first three albums, and if you know anything about those albums, you know how fast and hard those songs are. Sorry Sheena, but it sounds like your exposure to the Bouncing Souls has been minimal to say the least. Maybe you should be more familiar about a band before you attempt to accurately review them. Or, maybe the Souls' should add a fiddle, mandolin and flute to their set. Then they'd be incredible, right?

    I'd have to say that the Souls' put on an amazing show in SD as well as L.A. the night before. Greg's demeanor on stage was laid back. Who cares? It's been like that for a while.The rest of the band went off and so did the crowd. If you didn't recognize the last song of the night, maybe you should listen to their ablums a bit more closely. Overall, the Souls' were the Souls' and that basically means a great show. Canes' however is a weak venue.

    I saw this tour in Chico, I have to say that Madcap was boring, one man army was okay. But flogging molly was the craziest thing i have seen in a while, the crowd went nuts. And the souls were a little disapointing. I saw them at warped tour and loved them, they still played good, but greg was drunk out of his mind, and they played way to many new songs, and not enough old stuff.

    My opinion of the show-
    I didnt like madcap at all. It was the second time ive seen them, and i really didnt like them either of the two times. I had never heard one man army, but i had heard of them. I really liked them. Flogging Molly was fucking insane. The first time i saw them was about 4 years ago at Street Scene in San Diego, and ever since then, i have been in love with that band. Bouncing Souls were pretty good. It seemed like it took Greg a long time to get into it. They lacked energy at first, however it picked up a few songs into the set. I thought they played a good set. It would have been cool if they would have played code blue. Anybody know the name of that Oi song they played at the end?

    I saw this show in Seattle and it was pretty good on that night. From what you said though, it seems that Madcap got a better reaction here in the NW then in San Diego. One man Army was ok. Flogging Molly tottaly made me fall in love with their band. As soon as I have the cash I am going to buy all thier cd's. As for the BS, they were alright. I have seen them five or six times and this ranks as the worst that I had seen them, the crowd was into and they sounded ok, but an intensity level was missing. They still were better than most bands though.
