Most people seem to dump Mental in with the new wave of "bro-core" bands. You know, the ones fronted by the tattoo-covered dude wearing Nike dunks, a flat-billed fitted cap, a sleeveless shirt and mesh shorts. Of course, it's not necessarily wrong to do this, since Mental (arguably) began the hardcore revival movement that most of those kind of people are a part of. They shared the stage with bands like Have Heart, Guns Up!, and Righteous Jams. After Mental's break-up in 2005, its various members went on to spawn many bands (most on Lockin' Out Records, a label created by Mental's frontman Greg Willmott) including Cold World, Mind Eraser, L.I.O.N, and (of course) Righteous Jams. It's facts like these that turn most Punknews readers away from even touching an album like this. And, of course, it means that great releases like Mental's Planet Mental go unnoticed and underrated by many.

This is probably the one record that I have listened to consistently for the past couple years or so, when it came out. Totally blew my mind away! A great departure from their previous stuff and a great swan song of a record. I never really liked that much of their older stuff, as it sounded a bit too generic in their effort to 'revive' that old school sound that Lockin' Out shifts, but over here they've managed to bring together loads of old school influences and adapted it to their 'goofy' style... The goofiness is still here, but there's just so much awesome riffage on top of it ('Hate Me Now' being a fucking masterpiece) it's easy to miss! I think this will be regarded as a bonafide HC classic in a few years time, along with say Champion's 'Promises Kept'. MONUMENTAL! I dont listen to much hardcore anymore, and I dont consider myself a big MENTAL fan, but this album is AMAZING Record rules. However, one sentence is misleading, RJ, Cold World and Mind Eraser were all around before Mental broke up. Excellent review. Couldn't get into this when it first came out, maybe I should give it another shot. Weird review. Awesome record. GREGGLESSSSSSS this album looks good. im gonna have to get it. | Features
