Reviewing a Rancid record can be a tricky subject to cover, certain to polarize those who believe this band can do no wrong versus the camp that shut their ears a long time ago. I'll tell you right off the bat: I belong to the former. Controversial though they may be, one thing is certain: Rancid loves their fans. From playing multiple nights at smaller venues for a more personal experience to singer Tim Armstrong's scavenger hunt release of a free solo record, they've now one-upped themselves with a surprise B-sides collection (it should be noted: there was no advertising or release hype before it became available). Many of the songs have been available on their mostly import-only 7"s for some time, but for those who don't have Soulseek or record players, the songs are packaged together with four songs never released anywhere before.

The album kicks off with "Ben Zanotto" from the 2000 album sessions, leading directly into the upbeat ska song "Stop," which could easily fit into Life Won't Wait's melting pot of punk, reggae, ska, and rockabilly. Speaking of rockabilly, the first unreleased song on the compilation is "Devil's Dance" -- similar to "Lady Liberty" off LWW -- with guitarist Lars Frederiksen leading the song and chant-ready female backing vocals. "Dead and Gone" returns to their 2000 sound, followed by "Stranded" and "Killing Zone" from the Fall Back Down 7". "100 Years" is an upbeat instrumental groove that sets up one of my all-time favorite Rancid songs, "Things to Come," from the Bloodclot 7". Laid-back, soulful, political -- this song alone is worth the price of the CD. "Blast 'Em," from the Time Bomb 7", gets you amped back up for a steady stream of, again, self-titled 2000-era punk with "Endrina," the Matt Freeman showcase "White Knuckle Ride," the blistering "Sick Sick World," and Lars' ode to permanent ink, "Tattoo." Next, off the Ruby Soho 7", is the not-a-Jam-cover "That's Entertainment."

"Clockwork Orange" is the first real gem of the unreleased bunch, with a streetwise grind and a catchy storytelling chorus. Dark, gritty, and mean, this one's certain to be a favorite from the record. A steady roll of comp releases is up next with "The Brothels" from the first Give 'Em The Boot, "Just a Feeling" from the Radio 7" and the mid-`90s favorite Fat Music comp, and the truly excellent chant-along "Brixton" from a Kill Rock Stars record.

The last unreleased song we're treated to is "Empros Lap Dog," with Tim and Lars trading vocals over a busy bass groove, reminding me of the "goodbye for now" that was "Golden Gate Fields" on the 2000 record.

"I Wanna Riot" is familiar to anyone who bough the first edition of Let's Go that was packaged with the Roots Radicals single, heard the first Punk O Rama, or saw the Beavis and Butthead movie, and rounding out the bunch is the closing "Kill the Lights," in all its dark, pissed off glory.

Overall, to me this disc is a hell of a way to say "be patient" while we wait out the release of their soon-to-be-recorded seventh record. Putting all the B-sides together for everyone to have a chance to hear them was cool enough, but the inclusion of the unreleased songs (especially "Clockwork Orange" and "Empros") is all the thanks for continued loyalty and all one could ever ask for. A great collection of songs from a great band; this oughta hold you over for awhile. Thanks Rancid; much respect.

This album is raw and kicks ass like the 2nd self titled one.

I thoroughly enjoy a pretty solid majority of this thing, but as I listen to "I Wanna Riot" for the first time since ninth grade, the forced oi's are making me cringe to a fairly serious degree.

Count me in as part of the "Rancid Can Do No Wrong" group. This is a great album especially considering it's a bunch of b-sides. My only complaint is the flim-flam packaging.

I like this cd but I was kinda dissapointed that there was no liner notes. I would have appreciated the time frames and what singles these songs are from or lyrics... anything really.

yeah really.. what's up with that?

So it's "some of their best material" but you still won't pay for it?

Yeah. I'm not a big Rancid fan. The only reason I listen to them on occasion is because I accumulated their stuff years ago when I used to like them. I still think they are pretty decent, but $12 is a lot of money for me. Therefore "some of their best material" isn't a big draw for me.

Posted by lushj on 2008-01-17 17:30:37

So it's "some of their best material" but you still won't pay for it? What if you buy it from iTunes or eMusic? You don't get liner notes that way, do you?

    My Score:

Listened to most of this on youtube, thanks to some dude who put it up. This seems to have some of their best material (Things to Come, Ben Zanotto, The Brothels), and I'm sure I would listen to it more than any of their albums minus LWW because of the variety in songwriting and style. However, I agree with (mostly) everyone in that it is ultra-lame to put out a retrospective without liner notes. That alone is what will cause them to loose out on $12.25 from me.

"i still stand by my argument that all Rancid records involve at least one token ska song"

Please name a ska song from self titled 93' and Let's Go.

Oh wait, you fucking can't cause there isn't one. Brush up on your Rancid before making generalizations.

I haven't heard this yet, but I have about 25 Rancid B-sides. Just like with Alkaline Trio's "Remains", I am upset that Rancid didn't make this collection more definitive. They have so many b-sides (I have no idea what the fuck a C-Side is) that they could have released a killer triple disc, like Tom Waits. Also, I don't see why this WASN'T a Hellcat release. IT clearly would have been a top-seller. It would have sold more than Orange, Time Again and Left Alone COMBINED! Plus, it would have afforded them the opportunity to dish out some insightful liner notes (Like Alkaline Trio did a great job of on "Remains"). Sheesh! If you're going to do something, do it fucking right!

the root cause could be, of course, that i speak in a very specific way. due to this, i type in a very specific way.

regardless of how it was worded, i am pretty sure the point i was making was understood. it is my opinion...all i was saying was since the ska shit on out come the wolves, everything sounds the smae (more than previously)

That's not bullshit semantics, that's learning how to communicate like a normal human being. If I said "All Propagandhi albums post-Less Talk, More Rock and excluding Where Quantity is Job #1 feature much more intelligent and mature lyrical content," it would be dumb. When you're talking about two items in a list of several, coming up with dumb specifications to narrow down the list to just those two is not nearly as effective as just naming the two in question.

Also, your point is kind of dumb... and seriously, it's not like Rancid is that important.

Posted by ilovescott on 2008-01-16 19:31:26

lol at people grasping at straws to get rancid their "cred" back.

    Posted by Hey_Asshole on 2008-01-16 18:37:21

bullshit semantics aside, what i said is correct

Posted by usversusthem on 2008-01-16 18:13:39

"i specifically said all post-Out Come The Wolves releases (barring the second self titled, which was all fast punk)..."

You could have saved everyone a lot of trouble and just said "I think Life Won't Wait and Indestructible sound the same." Because that is the more simple way of saying "I think all post ...And Out Come the Wolves releases that are not Rancid 2000 sound the same."

    Seriously.

remove the "one" in the last paragraph, as the use of the plural "songs" negates the use of the word

    Posted by Hey_Asshole on 2008-01-16 17:42:05

everyone shitting on my comment about how all the records sounding the same, then referencing the first Self Titled and Let's Go are illiterate fuckwits.

i specifically said all post-Out Come The Wolves releases (barring the second self titled, which was all fast punk)...

i still stand by my argument that all Rancid records involve at least one token ska song, one token fast punk song, and one token street punk song.

yes, Life Won't Wait was a little more experimental than the others, BUT...it still had token ska songs, one token fast punk songs, and one token street punk songs.

    prove me wrong, assholes

The "Roots Radicals"/"I Wanna Riot" single wasn't packaged with Let's Go until several months after the initial release of Let's Go.

The only major disappointment with this CD was that "I Wanna Riot" on here was not the version with the Stubborn All-Stars. That would've made my day, but it didn't.

Posted by therehabaddicts on 2008-01-16 11:46:59

I haven't picked it up yet, but I'm pretty excited. I'm not gonna say that they didn't have some bad songs on Indestructible, but overall it was pretty awesome. I hope Lars stops trying so hard to be hardcore on the next new album. His new Bastards album's lyrics were laughably pretentious, and some of his Indestructible songs were pretty lame as well. Oh well, not everything's perfect. Rancid's still sick tho. Who cares if they have a new drummer? Brett Reed was an awful drummer anyway.

    My Score:

    a few more thoughts:

    1. whoever said the lack of liner notes/booklet in the CD is lame is correct. that pissed me off too. 2 reasons I can think of as to why they neglected this, 1. no one buys cd's anymore but me and you, 2. rancid put this out on their own dime, so they probably wanted to do it as cheap as possible. leaving out a booklet probably makes them an extra 20 cents a sale or something. they need to make money money make money money too, they live in cali, you know how much that costs? you gotta make 100,000 a year just to live like a bum in LA. but the 21 tracks make this worth the 11 bucks, regardless of the half assed packaging

whoever said all their albums sound the same is a retard. all of them are different. the first album had no Lars on it nor any ska/reggae songs, "lets go" was pretty similar to the first album but faster, more proficient and lars was in the band now. "wolves" was much poppier and anthemic, it appealed to a lot more people than the first 2 albums and sold a million copies to prove it (mostly due to ruby soho). lars really stepped up his presence on that album while Matt didn't sing on any songs (but kept the bass lines sick). "life wont wait" is by far their most experimental album, loaded with ska, reggae, rockabilly and calypso. "rancid 2000" was their punkest, fastest, rawest album and Matt sang some songs again and "indestructable" had a little bit of everything (other than Matt singing, which is fine by me, love his bass playing, loathe his voice).

Rancid really has the art of writing 2-3 good songs and 12-14 boring ones an album down to a science

except Life Won't Wait, that's a good album

is their Embrace cover included??? Really awesome cover from a unlikely source.

Posted by JerryCola on 2008-01-15 17:26:31

I think it's lame that the CD doesn't come with a booklet.

Usually when bands release b-side comps they like to talk about the songs & fill us in a little bit on why they're b-sides or post the lyrics and I enjoy that, its part of the reason why I still buy CD's.

They put no effort into this comp so if you already have most of these songs I would just download the ones you don't have and save your money for something else.

For people that have been into Rancid this is just a compilation of songs that you probably have either already purchased, downloaded, or heard from a friend.

Its nice to have them all in one spot but it doesn't flow as a full release.

Its nice to satiate fans with a little something like this, but i'd love to see a new album.

    ehh...
if you think about, all rancid releases sound the same. specifically post-out come the wolves. there is the token "fast punk" song, the token "ska" song, and the token "street punk" song.

the only record that really broke that mold was the second s/t...

and of course, since the garbage with the transplants, they now have the token "rap-ish" song, and the obligatory skinhead rob cameo

The version of "I Wanna Riot" they did with the Stubborn All-Stars is much better than the one they did alone.

Killing Zone and The Brothels are great songs.

Songs they should have included: Cheat, Brad Logan, If the Kids Are United and My Life.
