With a press sheet that name-checks Hall & Oates, it's not surprising to hear the first song start out with some overly energetic and polished sounding pop music. "Spit at Stars," however, runs the border of what's tolerable. Jack's thick English accent pops and spouts out words with high pressure, like a tea kettle steaming. The tune is toe-tapping and upbeat with fast strumming guitars, walking bassline, and some fast drum fills. But I can't stop thinking about the line in A Mighty Wind when Harry Shearer's character likens the New Mainstreet Singers to a toothpaste commercial. I imagine that Mr. Penate might have some shiny teeth, even for a Londoner.

I think this review is a little harsh. Yes, the production is very polished, and for that reason I preferred the demo versions of a lot of the songs on the album. The guitar can be repetitive, and the songs are simple, but nonetheless Jack Penate has a unique sound, and the album is upbeat and fun to listen to. It may not be groundbreaking in musical terms, but it certainly deserves more credit than 2/5. In my opinion the albums greatest downfall is its high level of production, and Penate is perhaps most impressive live or on his more raw sounding recordings. I think the excitement and following that he generated before his album was even released is a great credit to him. Man, this guy is scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the whole throwback-and-look-at-how-down-to-earth-and-'real'-I-am-with-my -crap-mockney-accent thing. He's like the male Kate Nash, only even more vapid and pretentious. If Richard Curtis made a rom-com about British indie music, this guy would provide the soundtrack. Laaaame. fuck jack penate. everyone told me that he was a really amazing dancer but actually he's shit. i'm a better dancer than him. From what I've heard (which is admittedly not much) it seems he only has one song, and not a very good one at that. This cd is too catchy | Features
