Apathy: a lethal killer if there ever was one. It ruins kids in school, numbs those in the heartless American workforce, and, as far as bands go, destroys them. So when Milwaukee pop-punk outfit Chinese Telephones spoke of finishing their full-length album in November 2006, yet failed to produce any actual evidence of said record one year later, I got scared. But, no need to worry: The fruits of their labor finally rear its ugly head in this storied band's self-titled debut full-length.

I don't entirely understand the hype behind this band. After hearing nothing but great things about them, when their split LP with The Potential Johns came out I picked it up and found myself unimpressed. The Potential Johns side blew me away, but the Chinese Telephones lacked energy and creativity. This LP isn't any different. As much as I wanted to love this band, I just don't see anything special about them and have a hard time even listening to the album from start to finish. Mediocre at best. I like these guys more than the Ergs Yeah, didn't like it. Got it after it was on Mitch Clem's top ten of 07. Usually what he suggests on that is gold, but this wasn't so. Maybe I should give it another go or two, it might grow on me. anything associated with The Marked Men is gravy on my mashed potatoes. It's about time someone did a review for this album. saw these guys last week with The Copyrights and Teenage Bottlerocket. "But like i implied, i've never known a band to legitimately record a song written by someone else who had barely any connection to the band. Which would be fine, if it didn't scream Marked Men. Regardless, love the song." hmmm good memory, yea i defended Underoath's latest album, as did Brian from the punknews staff: http://www.punknews.org/review/5418 , although i wouldnt consider myself a big fan b/c i dont really listen to that genre of music to JerryCola: i liked it, but i really don't think its as great as everyone says. Underoath? HAHAHAHA they fucking suck. "boring, repetitive, pop music" This is pretty damn close to being my favorite album of 2007. The only album that really competed with this, for me, was The Copyrights "Make Sound." haven't heard this yet, their split with dear landlord is great though boring, repetitive, pop music This album is just so fucking good. Back To You Again is one of the catchiest tunes out there right now. I fucking love this record. I kept thinking about writing a review for this but I never got around to it, great album! |
