It has to be hard being the well-recognized frontman and mouthpiece for a seminal `90s indie band trying to establish yourself as a solo artist. After Pavement disbanded, Malkmus has released five studio albums -- not a bad string in just seven years. But on Real Emotional Trash, it feels like Malkmus is still haunted by the lingering ghostly presence of his former band.

"For how great "hopscotch willy" starts it really drags as a song and only keeps you interested for 3 min. It's an excellent 3 min but the song is 7 min long." I'm seeing Malkmus in Indy at the end of the month. Can't wait...still, this album isn't as great as I was hoping it would be. Plus, after reading in an interview that "The Wire" was Malkmus' favorite show, I really hoped "Baltimore" was going to be about the show...he did write a song about Yul Brenner after all. Saw him last night at Sonic Boom for free. New stuff sounded really good at some points, kind of directionless at others. I love me some Pavement, though. im really digging this album although first few listens I was much more neutral about it. A few of the songs really drag. For how great "hopscotch willy" starts it really drags as a song and only keeps you interested for 3 min. It's an excellent 3 min but the song is 7 min long. It's these kinds of moments which bring down real emotional trash. What is possibly the best song on here "Gardenia" is the shortest at 3 min. Ironically my biggest complaint is "Gardenia" because im not even enjoying it at point anymore yet I am compulsively listening to it due to its infectiously catchy beat and melody. This album could easily rival Malkmus' Pavement days, if only he trimmed the fat. Its a pretty solid album and this review is pretty good too. nah dude he's released 4 solo albums | Features
