Joe JacksonRain (2008)Rykodisc Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Jelone (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on March 14th 2008
Roughly five years after he returned to the punk/ska/pop hybrid that made him famous (and interesting) on pseudo-comeback record Volume 4, Joe Jackson has slipped back into the role of “boring old man” on new album Rain. Like Volume 4, it features the original Joe Jackson trio that turned out such great pop-rock records as Look Sharp! and I’m the Man, allowing for some solid playing among the three members. But while bass player Graham Maby thoroughly explores the space afforded three-pieces and drummer Dave Houghton stays steady and assured, they can do little to liven up the dull arrangements Jackson has come up with on this new record.

This review's spot-on. Volume 4 was brilliant, this is mediocre. Shoeless Joe > Joe Jackson blaze of glory and night and day are seriously awesome albums. While I love Look Sharp! and I'm The Man, Joe was always the poppiest and least awesome of the British punk-related singer-songwriters (I'm thinking Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker here). No surprise that he isn't relevant now, considering that whole scene turned into different genres pretty quickly. When you listen to the early stuff, it sort of makes sense - Costello always sang like a country singer, Parker like a soul singer, and Jackson like a light pop singer. And just look where they ended up. His "Jumpin' Jive" album rules. oh, yeah i knew, i was just sayin i like em both. Branden, I'm almost positive Joe's was the original though... just to clarify. is she really going OOOUUUT WITH HIIIIIIIMMMM dont know much of joe's stuff but both his and anthrax's versions of "got the time?" rule. | Features
